Hi all
is it possible to retro fit bluetooth to my 05 Gti
Thanks guys

Yep you can there are various solutions from OEM as per link below to the various aftermarket solutions, lots of choice depending on what headunit you have and type of phone, check compatability :happy2:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-PREMIUM-bluetooth-RNS-510-RCD-mfd3-RNS510-ver-B-kit-/170463143814?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL&hash=item27b0652786 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-PREMIUM-bluetooth-RNS-510-RCD-mfd3-RNS510-ver-B-kit-/170463143814?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL&hash=item27b0652786) this is oem kit for use with the RCD510 and RNS510 head units, just use the search function as most of the systems have been installed and reviewed / discussed on here.

Thanks for that! mine is the billy basic head unit (not sure on model no) would this be ok?

If you don't have an RNS510 then you'd really need Highline dash to use an OEM kit.

I'm also after a retro fit bluetooth but according to one website the OEM is not compatible with the RED DIS! Is that the case? My main issue is i want the mic fully integrated into the vanity light unit e.g. not visible. Also are there any details on installations (inc pics) that go through a DIY install? Found a few but i'm still not convince is that straight forward. What's best OEM or Fiscon? Sorry, is that too many questions???? :rolleye:

There are versions of the OEM unit that work with the red dis -- version B I believe (there's a guy on eBay that sells them). That said the OEM ones only work with certain phones as most (if not all, I think) use "RSAP" (remote SIM access protocol) to talk to the phone, which unfortunately not all phones support.
The FISCON kits work with almost any phone and can be firmware updated to support more very easily. Main problem is the cost of them and the fact that the mic isn't very good compared to the OEM one (the FISCON unit only has a passive mic whereas the OEM unit has an active mic that works much better). Finally it's also worth mentioning that the FISCON unit comes with a "free" dis add-in that shows MPH/KPH, oil temp, litres of fuel left in tank, etc... that's worth ~£100 alone, making the £350 asking price slightly more bearable.

Neimad mate, thanks for the post, sounds like the Fiscon icould be the way to go (?). Do you know what the DIY install is like? Are there any links you know of?

I don't know of any DIY docs but I would expect the FISCON kit comes with a manual (I'm guessing here).
That said, as far as I know it's just a case taking the head-unit out and attaching a new cable to the back of it that sits between it and the normal quadlock loom. That cable also connects to the bluetooth box which you have to stash behind the stereo somewhere. The mic will be the real problem to fit but that's dependent on where you want it and where it will actually work -- as mentioned I believe the FISCON mic isn't as good as the OEM mic and may not work so well from the interior light panel on the roof -- not sure if that's still the case though, it's worth looking in to.

As above if, you can use an OEM setup with the 1Z0 xxx 729x part number.
729B will display on the red DIS but is now obsolete so getting them is harder.
729C, D or E (729E is the latest) will all work with a red DIS car but will not display on the DIS only on the RNS510 which isn't too much of an issue if you have an RNS510. The current 729E seems to work with more phones now including good iPhone support.
The rSAP units are the Nokia built ones and not the 729x ones.

Am i right in saying that whether it is the OEM or the Fiscon bluetooth kit, the MFSW control to answer the call will work?

Correct, although I had heard that the FISCON kit didn't work with the MFSW at one point but I believe that has been fixed since.

You can normally recode the steering wheel controller so that the OEM units will work with the star button.

Has anyone used or had experience of a company called Sat Nav Systems? They supply a OEM bluetooth kit (see www.satnavsystems.com/vw-universal-bluetooth.html for details) that fully integrates with the RNS-510 and RED DIS (and displays additional info as mentioned elsewhere) and can also upgrade the mic so it's installed in the overhead unit. The down side is that they want best part of 600 notes for installation etc! They do offer a 3yr on-site warrenty but me thinks that's a little steep. Anyone got a view?
-
^^ That's a Fiscon kit they are selling :happy2:
-
SteveP; Thanks for clarifying the kit but what about the price? Does it sound right? I've seen other suppliers installing Bluetooth for around the £ 500 mark which i thought was steep, though to be fair they didn't seem as good as this one (hidden mic, extra display etc).

Aint worth that in my eyes. I just bought a kit on VRSTU and fitted it myself. I did have a friend sort the canbus wires for me. I did struggle with the coding but VrStu came to the rescue. I am very very happy with it!!!!! and it didnt cost me no where near £600
-
£600 including installation is a lot, they are not that hard to install.
There are two OEM kits, the difference is in the last bit of the part number:
729x supports most phones that support the BT handsfree profile. In theory the later the revision the better the support (although a 729C seems to be newer than a 729D - so 729C and 729E are the most recent versions)
730x supports phones with remote SIM access profile support only (see my post in the For Sale section for some more info on this)
They are both equally easy to install, pretty much plug and play - no cutting or splicing of wires needed although some dash and trim disassembly is needed and you will need access to someone who can code the unit for you.
If you have the red Highline MFD then you need the 729B unit (or a 730A or 730B if your phone supports RSAP). There are versions of the 729 unit up to 729E but these do not interface with the red MFD (the kit still works but you will need an RNS510 head unit to use it)
I have had an iPhone 3GS, an HTC Desire, an HTC HD2 and an HTC HD Mini all successfully paired and working (making/receiving calls) with a 729B unit. The B units are getting rarer but are still available - I bought mine two weeks ago.
A mate of mine has a Fiscon installed and the functionality is great, but he tanks it up and down the motorway every day and has commented on some people not being able to hear him properly when he's, er, keeping up with the flow of traffic.
If you don't have the MFD then I'd probably go for a Parrot kit with it's own display. These will work with any HU and don't need to be coded, although installation is a bit trickier because you need to place the display unit.
I should get out more...... :signLOL:

Great info Mark, and a nice selection of phones, have a HD2 myself and about to purchase a 729 B so glad to hear the functionality is good, :happy2:
-
No probs. Only thing to note with the HD2 is that it does not provide any network info - so although calls work ok and contacts transfer over ok, you don't see your network & signal strength in the phone screen of the RNS510. If I get a chance later I'll pair it up and take a picture so you can see what I mean. If you've not got an RNS510 then this just isn't a problem of course
The HD2 does support rSAP though, and I used it just fine with my old rSAP bluetooth kit - only issue was that when it was connected via rSAP I lost the data connection. But everything else was fine. :happy2:
-
Cheers Mark, gonna be using it with the RNS, good to know that the missus iphone will also function. picture would be excellent
-
Thes guys will do it for £430:

Thanks for all the input guys, in particular Markfive for the details. All good stuff which will hopefully give me potentially savings!
Markfive - you mentioned the unit you brought was a 729B unit; where did you get it from and how much was it? Think i'll take up the DIY challenge so you guys will be hearing from me soon i suspect......

Here's one from the same seller

Ok, these pics aren't the best quality but hopefully you get the idea.
First the Desire

Everything looks as you would expect.
Now the HD2

So it doesn't show the network or signal strength, nor are there any presets on the HD2 screen (because the phone book doesn't transfer to the RNS). This is actually all down to the RNS fw level. Versions of fw prior to 2660 should be OK (I haven't tried myself).
In any case the contacts do upload from the phone to the bluetooth unit correctly, and are accessible via MFD. They are also correctly listed with names in dialled/missed calls on the RNS.
-
Cheers Mark, Thats a little annoying! My RNS is still on 1100 so once ive installed will test it out, although I was thinking of upgrading once installed to add the voice control but maybe I will give that a miss until the firmware is fixed!
Other option is I will have to get myself an android handset
