Title: OK - thoughts on tyre noise
Post by: Smudgster on May 11, 2010, 07:47:48 pm
I purchased my ed30 about 6 weeks ago and so far I love it. However, i was a little concerned on the road noise and it was becoming more annoying. So on a mad afternoon I visited the local tyre place and got the front tyres replaced. They were Falken FK452's replaced with Dunlop Sportmaxx (they were already on the rear) 100yds down the road and argh tyre noise still there.

I spoke to a couple of friends who said it could be a wheel bearing, which I though was strange as the car has only done 18k. I then booked the car in with the local specialists to have Eibach springs, Miltek tbe and some stereo equipment fitted. They also test drove the car and said that they thought it could be a bearing but not 100% as it was not showing some of the usual signs of wear. With this in mind I booked it into the dealers for them to have a look under warranty.

Well today I took it to the dealers and to my shock  :confused:its the back tyres. The tyres have gone out of shape, flat in some areas!!! I have never come across this before in all my 20 years of motoring.

So couple of questions

1. Anyone else had experience of this??
2. Should I replace the 2 rear tyres with dunlop sportmaxx or
3. Put the Falkens back on and replace the front with 2 new falkens??
4. If I do replace the 2 brand new less than 500 mile dunlops, anyone wanna buy them  :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:

I heard the dunlop sportmaxx are just basically a rebranded eagle f1 though?

Isn't this just the way golf's wear tyres on the back. i think the only cure is tyre rotation every 5-6k?

If not I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to correct me!

They are the same company yes but from the tyre reviews I've read it appears the dunlops are far inferior.  I've read a lot of threads talking about flat spots and other similar issues with the dunlops and i remember a tyre fitter saying just avoid them as it just happens and you can't stop it.

I had conti sport contact 2's on the back of mine for 34k and they wore perfectly even right down to the limit

Is the wear on the inside of the rear tyres? This issue has been discussed a few times on SCN and on here, as its a generic problem with the MK5 platform cars as they are coming out of the factory with too much negative camber. You can either change tyres or get 4 wheel alignment done and remove some of the camber. I believe there was a Technical Bulliten for the Skoda Octavia vRS but not heard anything for the Golf or the Leon.
You can argue that by changing this you end up changing the handling of the car but its your choice. More noise and going through more tyres or not so good sporty handling and prolonging the life of your tyres.

Yea its the inside edge of the rear tyres.

Im gonna change them and get 4 wheel alignment done. Not so worried on losing a little handling as the car wont be tracked at all.

What do ppl think 2 Dunlop sportmaxx are worth. I have done less then 500 miles on them and they cost me £250  :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

Please do me a favour and ring Dunlop.  :jumping:

I was speaking to some chap from Dunlop at Thruxton and mentioned that the Sport Max was sh*te, it deformed and caused excessive road noise. He looked at me as if I had sprouted another head right in front of him. When I said the reason they didn't know is that people go to their dealer and the dealer never passes it on.

If you wish to confirm this PM RedRobin as he was stood next to me at the time.

So do yourself as well as myself a favour and ring Dunlop. RR may even have the guys number.

I know that both Superted and Stu had problems on their vRS's and others on here have had problems on their Golfs.

Wouldn't mind a pm of that number too.

The road noise is the worst part of the car for me.  Don't know why but seems a lot worse at the moment.

Looking forward to the new wheels and Conti's, just need the time to get them sorted

....Definitely not so. The F1 and Sportmaxx TT are a slightly different structure but I can report that they work together fine on the same car (obviously different axles). I say this after 1,500 miles and a full trackday on the VLN circuit of Nurburgring recently. Yes, I know they're a road and not a track tyre.

Goodyear Dunlop are one company and the F1 and TT's are asymmetric sisters (or brothers if you prefer) but different tread patterns.

....You gotta be joking, Ian! The guy I was introduced to is head of a different GYD operation and I'm sure would not take kindly to being bombarded if I gave out his contact details.

I'll talk to him first (Thursday probably earliest) and then get referred to which dept to contact.

All this is something of a surprise to me because, so far, I'm not experiencing any of the problems being described here.

Please post here any links to all these other discussions elsewhere about such problems. Then I can construct a more coherent and cohesive report to the appropriate people at Goodyear Dunlop and hopefully post some answers or advise what to do or who to contact.

Thanks  :happy2:

You misunderstand Robin. The point is that they contact Dunlop and advise them of their problem. I didn't necessarily mean for you to give out your contacts details but either way Dunlop should be contacted and brought up to speed.

If I were Dunlop I would be asking myself why discerning customers are not fitting Sport Max once the factory fitted tyres are gone.

....Agreed. Sorry for any misunderstanding - I read it wrong.

As GYD is such a big company, let me sort out who to contact there and then post here - I think it will get better results and be more helpful to all concerned.

I must admit the .:R has Dunlop Sport Max on and the first thing that you notice is the tyre noise.
I say tyre noise but the Milltek and EVOMS have masked it to a certain degree.

Toyo R888's on Hurdy's car - Now THAT'S tyre noise! Sounds like an army lorry, and I love it!

But, I agree, road tyres made for the normal market are supposed to be quiet.

I was far too careful with the ED30, never really drove it like it should be driven - I do regret it now though! lol

I have just started to experience this myself.  Does this seem to only happen on the back tyres or have people seen this problem on the front?  Anyone tried to move the out of shape tyres to the front to see if this makes any difference to the noise?  Gutted that I just purchased two new SportMax for the front to match the part worn rears!

Also, anyone had any response from Dunlop on why this is happening to their tyres?  Surely if we can get a few cases it might be worth approaching them or Watchdog.

Only way to cure is to totally get shot of the Dunlops, use them as Garden flower pots

Swopping from back to front will only make the noise worse. Ive tried that before when i had my old Pescara's refurbed.

I don't get any bothersome tyre noise either - Not that I'd be able to hear it!

You wont be able to tell robin about the tyre wear. If you take the tyre off and run a straight edge accross the tread, then you will see the stepping stone effect matie.

Thought that might be the case.  Think I'm going to burn them!

Also, got two new ones not yet affected which i'll put on ebay,  Can't imagine anyone on this forum wants them but just in case PM if anyone is interested in the new ones - about 500 miles on em.

....Okay, but if wear is even when on the wheel and on the road, why does this matter? I'm not saying it doesn't matter but am trying to understand if I am in any danger from it.

The two Sport Maxx I bought from Mandy are down to 5mm and don't show any sign of this problem. I haven't fitted them yet.
