hi all,
there is a company near me called vag tune...... they offer a remap at the cost of £300 plus vat... they say they take stock information from YOUR ecu and build a map from it, therefore being individual for your car... they say its a gain of about 55bhp and you can also decide how you want to receive the power delivery from the right pedal...eg all in low revs, all at top end or proggresively throughout the rev range. is this common knowledge? i thought the likes of revo and bluefin etc took info from 1 car , eg golf mk5 gti and built a map and put that map on every mk5 gti that comes through the door, therefore not getting the best from each individual ecu?
-
You have two different types mate. The Generic map is what the likes of Revo, BF, GIAC etc use. Or you can have a custom map which is built more around your car.
-
ok i see.... the one i am looking into has no 'brand name' but has 12 months warrenty with it and can be reverted to stock anytime by the installer free of charge....

Totally your decision mate and is probably cracking software. But I would only use reputable on any of my cars, as for the sake of a couple of hundered sheets it's not worth the risk IMO..
I've used Revo on both my last 2 cars and done over 150,000 between them with not a single issue. Hence the reason i shall stick with them again and again (so long as I stay with VAG anyway).

i only buy something that i have read alot of positive things about, or have personally tried.
Its alright buying something cheap but if it makes a 15k car run like crap or worse damages it. that said it might well be a great product, but im like Vtec abuser. i only buy what i know :happy2:

custom code has 40% off at the mo , the best and the cheapest , no brainer for me :happy2:

Why is it still a turd though, If you by a Mk5 golf and put a 3.2 engine in, it stops being a golf and becomes a boat.
I will get me coat. Only joking big fella.

....In the case of Revo it might be described as a 'generic' map but surely its feature of being able to fine tune the Fuel/Boost/Timing settings then makes it adaptable to your individual car.

i recently had my gti re-mapped i read and read and read before deciding who to do the work. for every firm out there youll find a negative comment from some one no one is perfect, im very happy with my re map cost £300 and they came to my home to do it. with the offer of a free rolling road check whenever im near their base.

This is a basic information post and not directed at any paticular company, wether mentioned in this post or not.
This is one of my favourite subjects, having been in the engine management industry for 10+ years 90% of the stuff on the internet about ECU mapping makes me chuckle.
The biggest issue at the moment is people buying tools on ebay for a few hundred quid, making a website and claiming to be an 'ecu mapper' when all they are doing is copying and pasting cheaply bought software into peoples ECU's with no development, testing or real idea of what they are doing. Just take a look at these links, you can buy files for most cars for a few euros:
http://ucables.com/ref/ECU-MAPS
http://www.chiptuning-files.net/Chiptuning/chiptuning.html
Are these files any good? chances are, the people buying files wont know how to look at the file to see if it is infact even a map file, and if they are paying a few Euros for it then thers no chance it has had any development work, or testing. But they will gladly buy this file, write it into your ECU (usually parked outside your house armed with nothing more than a laptop) and dissapear with your hard earned cash.
Then theres the whole issue about 'custom maps'. The fact is that theres very few people in the industry that can actually make a custom map correctly. Anyone that offers a custom map should have their own dyno testing facility, and the car should constantly be tuned and tested, then retuned, then tested etc.... so that you can follow the rule of getting a base level of the parameter that you are tuning, changing this parameter and then re-testing to see the effect of the change. I had a customer wanting a dyno test last week that had a 'custom remap' done outside his house for £150, the customer seemed delighted that the guy had completed this 'custom' map in just 25 mins and that the car felt loads better to drive. The dyno showed the map to be exactly what I had imagined, they had literally changed just 1 map (fuel pressure) and although the car had gained power from standard it was extremely 'peaky' and extremely smokey (it was a diesel).
After looking at the map for the customer we realised that the harware and software number of the file used wasnt even a match for the ECU fitted to the car! So all that had been done was the good old 'copy and paste' method. After checking these ECU identifications, as I expected the 'tuned' file was actually from a completely different car. Was there anything 'custom' about this remap? well, yes. they had customised his ECU with another cars file, so in a way it was custom to his car, but is that what people expect with a custom remap? I think not and most would agree with me but by putting the word custom infront of the word 'remap' the general public will think that its somehow better.
will continue in another post....
-
Heres the best advice I can give when looking for a remap and what to ask:
1. Do they write their own software? if the answer is no, we email it to someone else to modify etc.... walk away.
2. If they do write their own software they WILL have dyno facilities so ask to see some power graphs of identical cars.
3. What testing will be done before and after the remap?
4. If it is generic i.e Revo, will the car be datalogged and checked, and retuned? it should be, no 2 cars are identical.
5. Is the company VAT registered with insurance and a registered business premises with a landline phone number?
Follow these basic steps and you wont go far wrong. :happy2:

PDT great first post

Sound advice PDT thank you for the great post.
-
You've got a car worth thousands of pounds and you're p*ssing about over the difference of a couple of hundred quid?
Buy cheap, realise it's crap, buy what you should have bought in the first place - costs you twice as much. Or, buy a new engine when it grenades.

I agree with Mike - buy cheap, buy twice and possibly a new engine as well for good measure.

Well, some people I just don't get, Hurdy
Like when road tax went up, some clown had just bought a Range Rover a few months earlier and then went about complaining they had to sell it taking a £5k loss because they didn't want to pay a couple of hundred pounds more a year.
People who scrimp on stuff are usually the ones who don't bother declaring it to the insurance too.

@PDT:
Great post confirming what I already believed :drinking:
I did a lot of research before I chose Revo and did most of my hardware mods first. I didn't remap until over 20k miles. I also researched which Revo agent to use and went to JKM because they have a Dyno-Dynamics rolling road and of their knowledge of the 2.0T FSI. The social aspect of a rolling road meet is secondary.. The primary reason is another opportunity to check my car's health. JKM are a 2-hour drive away for me but I don't think twice about it.
Whenever I've had a problem, turbo for example, or added an important mod such as the Twintake, we've been able to fine tune Revo's F/T/B settings to accommodate and look after the car.
-
nice one PDT. ill be quoting that the next time some loon on briskoda asks about his custom mapping for £100
-
Nah, leave them to it, Sy.
Means more bits on the used market when their car blows up and they can't afford to fix it - fools & money being easily parted, and all that...
-
in that case im going to reccomend those tuning box resistor jobbies to all the k04 guys so i can get their turbo and injectors
-
^^^^
I like what Joe has done: His K03 turbo goes kaput so instead of just upgrading to a K04 and all the bits, he changes the whole engine to an Ed30 :notworthy:
-

Yup, that's the proper way to do it. I bet his legs went a bit wobbly when he saw the front of the car with no engine in it. I know I did when mine was out. :signLOL:
Do it once and do it right is something I always tend to miss out with as I'm fickle and always want something better when it comes out. :ashamed:
-
a guyon briskoda with a k04 converted engine had it blow, and found that a k04 engine was cheaper than the k03????
-

I found that for Harry on Ebay. It was an Ed30 lump minus ancillaries and turbo which he paid £500 IIRC.
All his bits fitted and he gains a stronger bottom end ftmfw. :happy2:
-
he's selling up soon i think as well. i might get on there with some bifs early
-
I agree with PDT, I had a custom remap on my 993 and it was excellent, the key factors that made it excellent were:
1) The mapper, wayne schofield - chip wizards in rochdale - has an excellent reputataion in porsche circles - what rep does your £300 guy have?
2) At this time of year (and for the previous 3/4 months) no chance of using him as he is busy mapping GT3 cup cars and the like for race teams - his shop always has a couple of very interesting, expensive and serious cars in it - what cars is your £300 guy working on?
3) He has his own rolling road facilities, or if he comes to you, he books a local rr for the day and he only maps the car on the rr looking at the effect changes have on the various parameters in live rr time - what facilities does your £300 man have?
4) It takes him prety much all day and he is a real perfectionist, how long does your £300 man take?
5) I askd him to tweak my idle via the map, (had lwf stalling issues) which he did as he knows the code, can your £300 man accomodate such requests, i.e. he really does know the code
6) Finally you get a power graph print out and he keeps a copy of your std and new map in case you want original back.
How much £500 plus vat 1.5 yrs ago. Bargain! Keep thinking of going to him to see what he can do with my k03 gti, but don't know how well he knows the mkV GTI code.
Oh the result, with engine mods - cams, exhaust and high flow heads and bigger valves, (which another tuner fitted, wayne was just optimising) the car went from 275hp to 330hp on a non turbo car, impressive!
Anyway 6 simple questions to ask your tuner when it is a custom coded remap to check out oif he is any good or not , btw revo compared to above is not custom coded, but i would agree is more custom (and hence can run more power as more optimised) than std remap such as the superchips map I am running. HTH John
-
dont even start me on my old k03 bluefin map.
-
Does your £300 man who comes to your door let you know where he lives?
So when he fries your ECU, shrugs his shoulders and says something like "erm, my laptop's playing up - I'll come another day" and buggers off, you know where to find him when your car won't start.

Thankfully no and I probably never will.
Before you ask my opinion is based on the numerous instances of poor customer service, shoddy workmanship and outlandish claims.
Take my current car. 3.2 litres of throbbing V6 which they reckon they can squeeze an additional 35-40bhp from.
Fair enough but not any rolling road other than their own.
Thats my piece said. You obviously are a fanboy and as long as you're happy that's all that matters but trust me when I say there are many that aren't.
-
Do your own research, .......dont just go with one recommendation. I chose my tuner carefully, mostly off good feedback from the internet and plenty of emails/conversation beforehand. As prev mentioned on this thread, insurance is a must, also is the tuners ability to write their own code, not just download it and pass it on.
IMO, good mapping should deliver smooth and progressive power right through the rev range, and not just spiking for the 'top end' figure. :happy2:

I was going to try and keep this thread on topic but you started it.
If you are going to Munich and visiting the Oktoberfest then you should only be drinking Augustiner Edelstoff.
Having said that all the breweries produce Oktoberfest specials which are very palatable.
If you are there on the middle weekend then checkout the Oktoberfest Sevens run by Munich Rugby FC, my old team.

Love Munich, love Germany. We go somewhere in Germany every Christmas for a long weekend. I think abandoning the UK at some point would see us getting a place in Bavaria to go along with the gaff in the South of France in a summer/winter combo.
The Ayingers brewery has a lovely bar adjacent to the Hoffbrau Haus. They tap a keg of fresh beer around 5pm every day and it is the nicest tasting stuff I have ever had in my life.

I love Munich too. And Bavaria as a whole. Easy access to Italy which I love even more.
Once upon a time we did the Summer/Winter combo of Greece/Lake Geneva. You can always visit or even come back to the UK.

My first tour in Munich I lived right at the bottom of Schwabing.
So Sunday mornings were breakfast at Gunther Murphys in Schwabing followed by a leisurely stroll through the Englisch Garten to the Seehaus then back for copious beers and nosebag at the Chinesischer turm.
Good times. :drinking:

Like roast pork knuckle?
We usually stay up near the Uni, so would skip through and walk down through the Englisch Garten into the city the long way.

roast pork knuckle sounds like a wierd sexual practice ...
lost 2 days in berlin this weekend at a stag do, incredible place :happy2: , probably the best kebab Ive ever had :happy2:
nothing to do with Munich though :signLOL:

Munchen, fond fond memories.............................
Wonder where she is now.......... Chrome off a transit ball-hitch............
:innocent:
-
I'm not a great fan of lumps of pork.
The Kalbs haxen would be my first choice but better would be Kasespaetzle.
Hmmm 15 years is a long time. :sad1:
-
.
Staying on topic.. Munchen!
Had quite the best sushi anywhere, much to our great surprise:

Eyes right, gentlemen!!
-
One of the best kebabs I had was in Munich, I think it was Karlsplatz U-bahn station. I'm more of a fan of Berlin than Munich, but <3 Deutschland in general.
-
Can't say I've ever thought of having sushi or a kebab in Germany, there's too much of their own stuff to try.
Never seen any veal, other than in steak/schnitzel form, Hedge - I'll keep a lookout for it, but Kaesespaetzle is essential!!
I really like a winter dish you find up in the mountains (or that's where I've had it anyway) called Grunkohl with either potato dumpling or their version of rosti. Kale and various cuts of smoked pork and sausages cooked in broth. I love their boiled beef with fresh horseradish too... really warms the cockles after a day of walking in the cold. Think it was minus15 last time I was there.
God, I want to go back already!! Roll on Christmas.
-
^^^^
I'm not that keen on traditional German food generally except perhaps their cold meats and stuff which isn't so stodgy or heavy. Didn't plan the sushi-stop.. It was there on the street, we were hungry and both love sushi.
-
Does look good sushi!
Point taken in the summer months, far too heavy, it certainly does put padding on your bones though their food!!
Seems a shame people don't want to try it though, talking in general. I was nomming lovely Bratwursts for lunch at the Ring recently and others were going to Subway for 4x the price, I bet mine had less crap in it too.

My German friend Nina took me for a Bratwursts at what she said was the bestest place for it in Nuremberg (not to be confused with Nurburg!) - Was excellent

Thats my piece said. You obviously are a fanboy and as long as you're happy that's all that matters but trust me when I say there are many that aren't.
sorry pal but your talking rubbish , i m talking from personal experiences from the last 5 or more years you are talking from no experience what so ever which imo makes your comments worth less :stupid:

Back to kebabs! And bier!
Hey, I remember when custom code came onto the scene... it was after I got my Mk5 and joined uk-mkvs.net, because they appeared out of nowhere then. So it (probably) wasn't five years ago.
:fighting:
Anyway.

Sorry to ask this but new to gti ownership and also looking into mapping my golf asap have tryed revo stage 1 trial but had a bit of an acident and getting a zorst (cat back) this week, so what mods do i need to go straight to stage 2, i have read i would need a hpfp to go 2+ but just looking for stage 2 mod requirements.
Oh and i would always follow the sheep with mods tryed and tested is always the best way :happy2:
-
the only thin you NEED for stage 2 is a performance downpipe and cat(budget for around £450-£600) and the stage 2 map.
ideally for good airflow in and out of the engine, a performance air intake is a good idea(budget £150-£350)
the perfomance cat back part of the exhaust wont give much in the way of power gains but you will get the noise side of it which some people.
then id be looking into chassis, brake mods.
-
Thanks for the quick reply
Best keep saving
-
^^^^
 You wouldn't be encouraging a site newcomer to spending their money on mods would you, Sy?
-
nope, this post is trying to save him some money
:happy2:
you could just get a decat fitted instead (around £250) and the stage 2 map.
or even cheaper still. get a garage to take off the std downpipe, remove the pre-cat next to the turbo with a hammer(his would still leave the 2nd cat in place for MOTs), and go stage 2. im going to give it a try. it wont ever be as good as a performance Dp it it would be a heck of alot better than std

this would cost you abou £35 for a garage to do
-
I have read that (cheap but crazy) i'm also no mechanic.
I think i may just get a custom map as i like the car and not overly bothered about breaking the 300bhp mark just feeling dull shall i say had a clio 182 before and power delivery was ALL GO but yet so much fun to drive with the golf having no lag it just dosen't really excite untill you look down and see how fast your really going
Oh and i'm more into styling than huge power gains but appreciate all the cars and information this forum has to offer :happy2:
-
it would only cost you about 35-50 for a garage to do that. its only 4 bolts and a clamp tp get it off. an hours labour really

Huge following on R32OC as well...

I could tell you some really interesting stories involving court cases, destroyed engines, ripping people off, falsifying "independent" tests and how things may or may not have been acquired about many different people. But I won't.
If you ever get chance to speak to the old skool who built proper big turbo 1.8Ts and forced '6s when the whole tuning scene kicked off back nearly a decade ago, you'll hear the true horror stories. Forum stories are a drop in the ocean when it comes to the serious stuff.
I know who I can trust and stick religiously to it. I wouldn't say don't use X, Y or Z - for most generic stuff they're fine, but do some research into anyone before going and spending thousands....
I really don't understand why people feel it is necessary to defend something they have absolutely no financial or vested interest in, what does it matter to anyone if someone else thinks A.N.Other tuner is crap?
If you're happy with what you've got and what you paid for it, then leave it at that - unless of course you actually check what you've got and find it not to be what you think it is.....
Now, can we get back to Germanic foods and beverages?

Boobies and Beer, such a lovely combination.
What always fascinated me was how the Bavarians combined one of the largest drinking events in the world with a huge funfair.
I saw some dreadful sights that have probably scarred me for life. :surprised:
