Title: New Mac user
Post by: Smudgster on June 10, 2010, 09:54:35 pm
Hi All,

After the worst 2 weeks of my life and then selling the ed30 i and a spare 30 mins this afternoon so I went and treated myself to a new desktop. I went for an iMac 27" and so far I am very very impressed tbh.

Now I do like to play the odd game and love the command & conquer games. Where can I buy games from the mac online as i am unsure as they all seem to be for the PC

Thanks
Smudge

You can install steam (for games like portal civilization half life etc ) and there mac games are ever growing. I currently use it and it works very well on my MBP

Or you can buy from apple online and they usually get delivered within 2 days if in stock.

Yup this one :signLOL:

I can talk you through it.

You have 2 choices. Bootcamp or a virtual machine ( VMWare or Parallels )

Both have pro's and cons

Bootcamp software is already on the computer

Virtual Machine you would need to purchase VMWare or Parallels.

For both you will need a copy of windows.

What are you wanting to use both systems for and i can then advise you which is best to get. :happy2:

I have a genuine Windows 7 Pro if wanted to Dual Boot with Windows 7
Was gonna use it to dual boot my own system, but I can do everything I need to on my Mac so not gonna bother now!

You can get Steam for Mac now.
http://store.steampowered.com/browse/mac
The best place to track down games for me is through the apple store
http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/games?mco=MTM3NDgyMTg
But you can usually get them cheaper elsewhere.

Parallels lets you play non-demanding games, for example I use it to play pro-cycling manager.

I have an imac 27" and believe me youll never go back to a PC
easiest way is to use bootcamp and install a copy of windows to play your games, but Macs are at last starting to catch up with game playing

Animal - aint got the new as i heard it was crap. I like playing Kanes wrath and the expansion pack. TBH im crap but its enjoyable.

Would only run windows to play the odd game. Everything else would be on the mac

Loving it so far, bought a new wifi printer today and my wife was amazed that I had it up and running in mins!!!  :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:

Welcome to the world of apple. It's addictive. I currently have a 13.3" MacBook pro, iPad 64gb, 500gb time capsule and my wife and I are about to upgrade to the iPhone 4 from the iPhone 3G. We also had an iMac 20" previously, but changed to a laptop. I will be changing the MacBook for a Mac mini server if they refresh them with hdmi output, then will plan to get another iPad at some stage. :)

I don't use mine for gaming, but vmware and parallels are both great if you 'have' to run windows. I set mine up with boot camp once, but just couldn't bear to run windows on my beautiful Mac, so deleted the partition. I have to support windows on a daily basis, so running osx at home is a pleasure and a change.

Enjoy!!!  :happy2:

If your only doing it to play games every now and then a virtual machine is the best bet.

However I would seriously look at steam or a game for the mac from apple etc so you don't have to spoil it :signLOL:

I had a similar problem with windows 7 pro on bootcamp. Iirc I had to boot windows in safe mode and then force the apple software update to get it all to work.

Search apple help pages as you have to download some software from them and copy to usb pen drive. this then installs all drivers needed to complete set up. it worked for me

Anyone looked at this?

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

Ideal for running Windows Apps on a Mac if you absolutely have to.  :happy2:

Saves having to dual boot or run vmware/parallels.
