ok guys well today i had a new exhaust system built for my ed30  and after having a cat back Milltek on the car for a while i thought it was time to go custom :rolleye:, so after abit of thought i gave the guys at http://www.blueflameperformance.com/ a call to see what they could do for me and i told them what i wanted from the system and after a chat and a few emails to Nigel at blueflame he said to bring the car in on Friday for the guys to do the first system for the ed30 golf.
so i turned up this morning at 9.30 and handed my keys over to the guys to start work and was told it would take all day to do as they need to make a jig for the system to be made on so when it get sold in the future they have the plans set out in front of them. I got a nice visit from Top Cat at around dinner time who waited the rest of the day with us and took us for some dinner at the local KFC  :happy2: and at about 5 ish we heard the the car fire up       this thing sounds  and even Top Cat was like oh my god that sounds  so while it was on the ramps i took a few pics. its 3"" all the way and is a non res system, this thing is not subtle

looks fantastic Matt :happy2:
be good to see the power on the dyno , and hear it at the pod :drinking:

If I get chance the car will be left in stock mode and put on the rollers as I know what it did stock and then I will switch the map on and see what it does and then stage 2 :rolleye:
-
Your 32 zaust sounded the boy :jumpmove:
How much was the blue flame system Matt??
Toast
-
Looking forward to hearing this at the Pod Mat!! Mine spits and pops too, so I'm wondering if they will have a similar sound!

i got a good deal as i am testing it for them and letting them know any problems or anything i think needs to be changed or fine tuned :happy2:

Mats definitely pops a bit as you let off the gas and is quite loud when his foot was planted. As he left before me i could still here his zorst going down the road all the way to the junction at the bottom. :chicken: :chicken: :rolleye:

Sounds excellent! I'm intrigued as to if there is any drone/boomyness from the system! Hopefully not!

How do you manage to keep your car so clean underneath, Matt?
Is there a back box on your system or is it halfway only, as in your pic?

Jet wash
and no back box just the 1 half way down as i was after as free flowing as we could get :happy2:

Nice! :happy2:
-
Sounds lovely in real life Mat!! Pops and bangs like mine, but has a deeper note and a slightly louder idle!
Hows it faring since you've put some miles on it? Does it get boomy/droney at all?
-
well after putting about 700miles on it over the last week or so i am finding it less boomy than the milltek non res and more meaty at idle and a deeper yet louder when giving it some  and for me its the perfect setup and the noise i was after.
I like the look of the tail pipes as they look stock but are just bigger in size so it just suits the back end and by losing the big exhaust box at the back of the bumper it lost a bit of weight aswell but that still not helping the clutch out :rolleye:.
When i had the exhaust put on the car it was in stock mode and the sound was good and after a day or so i thought lets stick the map on and see how it sounds and i just left a smile on my face , after a trip up to newcastle my exhaust light came on  but i knew it would do as its running a 3" system so after getting home and plugging it in to vag com it was as i thought lower temp on lambda probe, so after a quick thought i knew stage 2 had to go on the car asap to sort this out as it takes into account you are running a free flowing system :happy2:. Now after having stage 2 put on it not changed the idle / mtr way driving noise  but now give it some right foot and it just sounds awesome and even my mate with the clio said my god that sounds awesome  and not like a 4 pot as its such a deep noise.
verdict am i happy with it? YES i have made a good choice and i know no matter what any probs they will sort it no matter how small and the sound is so addictive
the thing i like is its not a Milltek and its not the same as everyone else and thats a good thing for me as i dont like to do the same as others :rolleye:
would i say get one to others? Yes i would and i would say give nigel a call at blueflame or get in on a group buy on this setup :happy2:
-
glad your happy with it mate, it is a beast! ;)
-
Sounds like you're a very happy man Mat! Congrats!
I approve also, and would have seriously considered it, had there been one available/had i lived closer to Blueflame when I was making my decision!
-
....
I didn't get a chance to hear it at The Pod (nor to talk to you) but it's great to read your enthusiasm and enjoyment of it. Posted sound clips just don't cut it for me.
Deeper always sounds better on a 4-pot imo. I look forward to hearing it some day.
:happy2:
-
Sounded very nice at the Pod Mat... My Milltek's got less boomy on the motorway after 1500 miles so I'm very happy with it now - and IMO it makes my Ed30 sound better than my wife's R32 :surprised: :surprised: :surprised:

There is no point in doing a separate review for this post, so i would like to just add to this one.
I got my Blue flame turbo back zorst fitted today.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDetailing_pics%2FIMG_0605.jpg&hash=e3e6170d5a847c3df7085168f59497b137d52e4b)
I have done about 2 hours driving so far and i cant stop smiling every time i put my foot down.
It is nice and civilised under normal driving then just sounds completely different when accelerating. Most of the extra sound comes at low revs until it picks up a bit of pace.
At high revs it sounds similar to a Milltek system, but getting there it is much deeper.
But most of all it has transformed the DSG gear changes which if you time it right you normally get a nice blip, but time it right now and you get a beautiful loud BOPPP

The reason I asked where you got it made was I went for exactly the same tail pipe on my GTI when I had the R32 rear on that.. Looks perfect IMO!
Also, DSG changes with an exhaust sound great dont they! Love that on this vid..

Believe it or not 2 people today tried to convince me that the tips were crap, and the chap who made up the system really tried to convince me to have different ones
In the end i almost had to say well i am the customer its my loss if its a Fook up. :innocent:

Also found out they grow today as well :ashamed: did not know that. I asked for them to sit no more than a centimetre out from the trim, and i actually watched them grow nearly an inch. :chicken:

....Ooooh! Sexy!!

looks fab-tastic pussy cat :driver:

I would also like to add my opinion of my new bleflame on this thread. I have had the same system as matts fitted to my car :happy2:.
First thing you notice is the quality/fit and finish of the exhaust, the tailpipes are a perfect size for the ed30 rear. They look like bigger versions of the stock tailpipes which is what i was after.
Next thing is the growl on startup, straight away i knew the car was going to sound awesome with the deep burble at idle.
I couldnt wait to drive the car and i took it through the revs in 2nd and 3rd and i couldnt wipe the huge grin off my face .
When on full throttle it sounds completely different to the milltek i had on previously louder at full throttle with a few more pops and bangs when lifting off .
My only worry with the exhaust being louder than the milltek was that it may be louder/more boomy at motoryway speeds. I was very wrong its really quiet at motorway cruising speeds and is quieter than my non res milly was.
I also feel i have more top end grunt as i had the 2.75"dp and my new system is 3" all the way so it helps get the exhaust gasses out quicker.
Im a very happy customer. Big thanks to nigel and chris at blueflame for sorting out the exhaust at a great price and thanks to matt for sorting it all out :happy2:
-
Glad you are happy with it fella
-
Blue flame look to be a good alternative to Milltek, would the 3" make a difference over 2.75 when it comes to BHP?
-
Blue flame look to be a good alternative to Milltek, would the 3" make a difference over 2.75 when it comes to BHP?
100% YES more bhp as the ko4 will make more boost
-
also the milly has quite a few kinks in the pipework. the blueflame pipework flows much easier
-
Blue flame look to be a good alternative to Milltek, would the 3" make a difference over 2.75 when it comes to BHP?
100% YES more bhp as the ko4 will make more boost
you would lose some of the torq switiching from 2.75" to 3" I am led to believe.
I really want one of these but the wifes not working at the mo so cant justify the £££, great price though
-
you would lose some of the torq switiching from 2.75" to 3" I am led to believe.
....I've heard that too. Also back pressure may be effected but not necessarily a problem.
-
i would say if you are running a ko3 setup then go for the 2.75 that they do but if you have k04 and are going for bigger bhp then 3"" would be better for more gains, but then again Tc got the 3"" system so ETTO
-
I enquired about this as i had the exact same concerns, they told me all of the testing they did came up with the 3" system giving the best gains on a mapped car, and on a standard one there was a small loss of bottom end torque but nothing that you would notice. :innocent:
-
are these systems de-catted? what you going to do about MOT? take it off and put stock back on?

Any chance of a ball park figure for the cost of the BF system please guys? Just an idea of cost as this is quite high on my to-do list.
It's also a bit of a myth that back pressure = low end torque... It's all to do with the scavenging effect within the exhaust pipe. At lower RPM with a larger exhaust, exhaust gas velocity it lower meaning the pressure waves moving through the exhaust are less powerful. This is more of problem at lower RPM because at higher RPM, the pulse frequency is much higher and the gas flow is closer to constant. The scavenging effectively sucks exhaust gas out of the engine rather than leaving the engine to push it out. By reducing this effect you are making the engine work harder, hence the apparent drop in low end torque. It's still there, but less is being transmitted to the wheels.
However, having said all that, it's less of an issue with turbo car's as the turbo vanes are in the exhaust stream meaning the pulses are diminished somewhat and there is less scavenging effect in the first place, therefore less to loose. So in theory, on the GTi, you shouldn't really notice much drop in low end torque (especially with a turbo anyway). Infact, it's almost win-win because you aren't loosing low end torque because you weren't relying on the scavenger effect in the first place (as with a N/A engine) but you are lowering back pressure with means more power at higher rpm due to less of a pressure drop over the length of the system.
Sorry for my rambling/thinking out loud... quiet day in the office. I thought it might be relevant.
-
Animal we have a group buy on this at the moment look in the special offer section.
But basically it is £ 764 for the full turbo back system fitted.
-
Cool, thanks.

Usefully informative, animal! :happy2:

Don't take it as gospel. It makes sense in my head and I think I've managed to get it down properly. I just wanted to try and dispel this commonly held misconception that back-pressure is needed for torque. It's all about exhaust gas velocity as low RPM.

Very true, but as far as I understood there was little to no scavenging effect on a tubo car post turbo in the exhaust??.. Only turbulence caused by the wastegate opening if you have an internally gated exhaust..
The reason you can get away with a larger diameter downpipe that then steps down to a smaller diameter later on in the exhaust is that the exhaust gasses exiting the turbo are much hotter, ie, more velocity and as they cool going down the exhaust they need less space..
-
Yeah, the rules are different for turbo engines. I forgot until I was half way through writing that the GTi is forced induction (doh!) which is why I added the bit at the end about it being less of an issue on the GTi. But yes, there will be a change in density as the gas cools so the change in diameter wouldn't be the end of the world. Although at the same time, any change in the pipe like that would still cause turbulence in the gas flow which effect the rate of flow?
-

Yeah, thats what I mean, you can get away with a step down but its certainly not ideal. You need the smoothest flowing system possible with the smallest silencers too, big silencers, even if they have a straight through design end up being huge expansion areas where the exhaust gasses will loose heat and therefore velocity..
The most critical part is having the optimum diameter. 70mm for K03 / 76mm for K04 seems to work well.. Although I think 70mm on a K04 also works well, but you will loose some potential top end power..
