Title: Theo's Edition 30
Post by: theo on June 29, 2010, 08:56:37 pm
Right, well after some prompting here it comes...

The story started last year when i got the itching to get another hot hatch. At the time I was driving a Range Rover Sport 4.2S/C which was a great car and amazing in the snow with the engine noise that made your knees weak. The fuel cost was crippling however, so i decided to look around for another car.

I managed to stumble across this site and decided that the GTI was going to be the car for me. I then spent plenty of time looking for a car. After selling the Range and nearly buying Neil's white ED30 (Which as we all know is going through some major mods now he decided to keep it) I started looking again. I really wanted a CW Ed30 DSG but with nothing around, I ended up getting a very good price on a DBP Ed30 DSG...

This is how it started out
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftheo182%2FEdition_30%2FFront-1.jpg&hash=1df7d8c223677ed9128de7fb5aa7dbe14d44441d)

I got the car home and gave it a little clean and fitted the Bra! (excuse the iphone pics)

So having been looking at cars and looking around the forum for a while, reading peoples build threads and getting an idea of what mods are around and reading the reviews section, I put together a list of what I thought would be a sensible and thought out selection of performace mods.

I spent a while speaking to different tuners about their thoughts and getting quotes for parts and work to be done, and the culmination of this was booking the car in with VW Racing.

So as some of you know, the car has been there now for a week and a half, I was meant to pick it up on Friday, but due to some matters out of my control it is still being worked on. I was hoping to have it for inters, but am now hoping to collect it this week!

So the list of things that VW Racing are doing is as follows:

Revo Stage 2+, Revo DSG 2, APR HPFP, VW Racing TBE, Forge Twintake, Forge Twintercooler, Forge DV, Forge hoses, KW V3's, VW Racing front and Rear ARB's, WALK, BSH Catch Can... *scratches head to think of anything i have missed*

So thats kind of where things sit at the moment.

I am currently looking at track wheels and am quite tempted by the anthracite PR1.2's that VWR are currently doing and have put on their mk5. We will see though.

I think i fell into the modding pool at the deep end!

More to come when I finally pick the car up... Watch this space!

Engine mounts are on the list when there is a bit more available cash along with an LSD. Again, going to do some looking into the various options and decide where to go from there!

Oh I missed one thing off the list above, also adding some VWR Brakes onto the car!

Shame it wasn't done for inters as I would have liked to get some runs in but will have to be patient.

the simple answer is quite a lot. I kept an eye on the for sale section on here and got a few bits when as and when they popped up, and it also pays to shop around to get the other parts, I was fortunate with a GB on the Twintercooler too. Also spent a while shopping around for prices on fitting and labour. All i can say so far is a big thanks to Kate at JKM for helping me get a lot of parts and Matt and Simon at VWR for putting up with my ever increasing list of parts and their helpful service!  :happy2:

Thanks Ben.  :happy2:

@CarrG I was tempted to do the mods in stages so I could get an idea of the gain each provided, but at the same time, I had the option to do it in one hit and the deal offered was too good to pass up  I'm looking forward to feeling the result. I dont know i will notice it so much as I have had the VWR car for the last week and a bit!

Still getting excited tho

Its based on the Milltek system, but has a shallower back box similar to RedRobin's Milltek system. (RR's is a res IIRC)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.volkswagenracing.co.uk%2FGolf%25205%2520Pages%2FExhaust%2520System%2520Full%25202.jpg&hash=d092cea07388917445044acad7bef3097f7cec5d)

Sounds amazing on their demo car, but will do a full review in due course

I have driven a manual for the past month since mine as been having open heart surgery! I absolutely f*cking hate it! I can understand manual in a raw track car, GT2, GT3 RS etc. but in an everyday car like mine, DSG FTMFW! The box is an absolute masterpiece, I wouldn't be without it! Can't wait to get mine back  :popcornsoda:

Right... Update time!

After a frantic week last week, i found a couple of hours in the evening to dash up to VW Racing and collect the car.

The drive home was taken quite steadily mainly due to the fact the rear of the car was filled with all the parts I had taken off.

Unfortunately, on hitting the A34 and getting some speed up, i found the car had a bit of a judder at speed. This was obviously a bit of a worry. As VWR are not open over the weekend, I dropped them an e-mail and tried took things steady over the weekend.

I got a phone call just after 9 this morning as Matt had picked up my e-mail and was concerned that I was unhappy with the car so promised me he would get things sorted as soon as possible.  Within a few minutes I received another call to tell me he was dispatching Andy on a 3 hour drive to my office to have a look at the car and see if he could sort matters out. Andy arrived, spent a while tinkering and quickly diagnosed the problem. After a minor adjustment of the daming, the car was sorted. All I can say is a massive thanks to the VWR Boys for exceeding the levels of customer service I expected. Another recommendation from me!

All I can say now is WOW  :jumping: It is an impressive car. It just takes off and keeps pulling hard through the revs. I know all Matt, Simon and Sam at VWR were very impressed with their work and I can only agree. The handling seems spot on through the twistys and it looks great as well. The exhaust note is lovely and I am loving the induction noise of the Twintake system!

It is now just a case of learning how to bring the power in to make sure it is used efficiently and I dont end up just spinning the fronts! I think some stickier rubber could be needed now!

I also managed to have a play with some vinyl on the front end

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftheo182%2FEdition_30%2FCarbonMask.jpg&hash=df8ffa7d8850858d7364545db15783f00a64325f)

Happy with the look. Needs a good clean now and I will be able to start the pic whoring. Will try and get some more pics up when I have given it a clean!

Guess its time to bring on the next stage of mods...

Right, well a little bit of an update...

Spent a couple of hours down at JKM this afternoon having a play on the Dyno! Keith did a few runs with the car and some logs! Initial settings were B7T5F5 which produced the following

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftheo182%2FEdition_30%2FDyno1.jpg&hash=80ce6411eab2f589ad14668457592457c81108c3)

Keith felt that the timing pull was quite high and was struggling and holding back the car. The car was running on VPower it was concluded that it could well be a dodgy batch of fuel. We therefore gave another run with tweaked timing settings and this provided a figure that made me considerably more happy with the car from an all round point of view. The settings were B7T3F5 Which produced this...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftheo182%2FEdition_30%2FDyno2.jpg&hash=499a10b144ef93e134136637e70020570568e8be)

Apart from the timing issue that was put down to fuel, the car was running very well. Charge temps were between 35-37 on the Dyno with an ambient room temp of 26.

Post by: theo on August 11, 2010, 12:51:41 pm
I would say its definately worth having it checked, it was amazing the amount I learned about the car's performance from the rr session. VW Racing did indeed do the map on my car, then more out of curiosity of being asked what my car was running, I got JKM to give it a dyno!

Like it a lot mate,Nice and different (though the wife hates any colour other than red for the GTI stripe, so mine won't be changing)
Could top that off nicely by doing the brakes, but be careful not to make it look too much like a Peugeot as used to see a few of those with that shade of green on the body kits/Decals.

Hi Theo, looking good mate, how are you finding the 888's. I have just put some on a set of Neuspeed RSe07 wheels for the track but haven't had a chance to give them a go yet.

Are you planning any track days ?

Hi Neil,

Am back running PS3's at the moment. For the time i did have the 888's on I found them fantastic. They inspired even more confidence in the handling of the car, it just seemed to hold and stick through the corners. I am planning a few track days this year as well as a ring trip. We will have to meet up at a track day sometime, I would love a spin in the eddy still.

I have to get the dreaded 4yr service, cambelt, water pump and DSG pocket emptier out of the way first tho.

Just a small update from today...

New RNS510C LED fitted. Thanks to Nick from R32OC for sorting me out with the unit and fitting/coding it all for me. Really impressed. Great bit of kit. Now need to get the MDI sorted.
