I'm pretty sure that my passenger rear wheel bearings have gone! (At 30000miles) and as much as I would like to I don't think I can get that done under warranty! So can anyone tell me the part numbers I need to stop this bloody noise!
-
I'd check to make sure your rear tyres have not gone out of shape, usually the inner edge on the rears which develops a 'saw tooth' profile, extremely common on mkv chassis cars especially if running dunlop tyres and gives you a drone/whine and is commonly mistaken for wheel bearings..
Worth a quick check :)
-
ok i will go check that!
-
nope the look fine!
anything else??

Its not really a 'they look ok' thing though, all 3 of my MK5's has had the same problem and in every case the tyres 'looked' fine, trick is to run your hand around the inner edge of the tyre in both directions, if one way is smooth and the other direction feels stepped in away way (ie your hand catches and can feel the difference in height between the tread blocks) then there buggered...
Evo mag had the same problem with the GTi they ran, dealer diagnosed and fitted new bearings as did my dealer on my first MK5 without curing the noise, new tyres on and super smooth and quiet again :happy2:
-
so if i swap front and back wheels...my noise should move?
-
Yep! should do mate :happy2:
My Audi A3 was by far the worst for it, running Dunlop Sportmaxx and sounded shocking at anything over 40mph, kind of a rythmic droning with a bit of 'waa waa waa' thrown in :signLOL:

I got my wheel bearings done under warranty and then they failed after 5 months...
-
ok so need the part numbers now, everything i need to change the bearings on passenger rear.
anyone know how to get them?
cheers!

Where are you? Just had both rears done by a garage in Leeds. For cash both were replaced for less than the cost or one part from VW and the part is supposed to be better quality.
Else you need M18 & M14 male spline sockets. Axel stands and a good 1/2" breaker bar.
Much easier if you have a ramp for access.
If you are near leeds and would like the mechanics number pls pm me.

what did you pay?
my mates fitting mine, what part did he fit if its not the genuine vw part?
i was just guna go to vw with part numbers and get the stuff?
-
Just thrown the old one in the box away.
I can try to find out, the garage is a VAG Indy. Seem to really know their stuff. The part is imported from Germany. Sold for about £60.
You need to be careful as there are two sizes 30 & 32mm from memory.
