Title: Check your diaphrams.
Post by: dajonic on July 22, 2010, 02:19:11 pm
I'll try to get a picture up asap but theres been a niggling whistle from my car a little while now and have been holding of having it looked at until the service was due. Picked up my car this morning after supplying them with the new uprated version and oh my what a difference. Checked the old one and there was a huge hole in the rubber. The old girl picks up like a beauty again, so much so it's like a new car. So if theres a niggling little doubt in your mind about the car get it sorted sooner rather than later. Right I'm off out for a blast  :happy2:

Ok the first one is the diverter valve...doesn't look too bad from a distance

Second one is with the plastic collar removed and you can see a little slit in the rubber

And finally with the diaphram removed and turned inside out to stretch the rubber...oh dear

on k03 in the most awkward place ever, right at the back of the engine next to the turbo

on the k04 i believe this is at the front to the right hand side, i could be wrong with this one though

its in the dv, anybody who has a diaphram DV i suggest changing to a piston type anyways as its only 40£ to replace with and that will never break.

^^^ I second that, Joe. The 'D' valve was ~£46, when I got mine in February.

I'm only standard and it made a real difference to mid range and immediately felt more, erm... 'boosty'.

Crap description, but I know what I mean...  :ashamed:

~£46 + VAT, so ~£50ish is about right.  :happy2:

Evenin' all.

I find it amusing that exactly one year to the day and 30,000 miles after getting my Ed30, the performance feels a bit off and this thread pops up ;)  I swear the universe is trying to tell me something!

I did think it was that I'm getting 'used' to the APR remap, but then I realised that the shove in the back had gone.  I have read about the diaphragm issues, so I was waiting for the time...   My stealer is doing the usual "£60 for a diagnostic check" line, so I'm not inclined to chase down a replacement under warranty (only 10k until that's shot anyway!).

I'm considering a Forge item; I fitted a Forge DV to my Smart Roadster (http://blog.leeblackwell.com/2008/04/fitting-dv-to-roadster.html) so my experience is that the hardware is fairly solid.  Having mooched around on this 'ere forum, opinion seems to be divided with no clear winner between a Forge unit and a 'newer' (rev 'G'?) OEM part.   I'm leaning towards paying more for the Forge in a fit and forget kinda way (well, notwithstanding giving it a clean/lube every year).  Oh, and as I'm fundamentally lazy, I'll likely get a local VAG tweakin' firm to fit - any suggestions near Milton Keynes?

Er, that is all.

By the looks of that diagram you need to access it from underneath the car... I may be wrong!

I had a quick look last week when I was changing my spark plugs, but couldn't decide if it was possible to reach from the top of the engine bay...

In answer to your question, yes you can take it off and put back on without a problem.

It's a real pig to get to as the earlier diagram shows. I couldn't see it from the top of the engine bay and that was with the air induction pipes removed. When I looked under the car all I could see without putting it on axle stands were the plastic spray guards fixed to the bottom of the engine bay. With axle stands it's probably a different matter and as you can see from the pics in my first post it all dissassembles so you can check the diaphram. although to be honest if you've got those doubts about the boost not being right just get the new version and fit it. You won't be dissapointed. My cars like new again.

DVs broken are news again  :signLOL:

I know the new ones coming out of the factory are meant to be reliable but back in the ol' days no such part was available and the only option was the forge dv, which is what's still on my car. No complaints in many happy miles.

Hi all,

I think I have an issue with my DV and reading the numerous posts on here it seems it is well worth changing the diaphragm. For a good month or so I have noticed a whistle from the front of the car; this might be 'normal' but the whistle has got far more noticeable as if something isn't quite right. I guess I need to give the car a good run and feel the pull, to be honest I haven't noticed any major changes here.

I have a edition 30 so I gather the DV is at the front of the car. Can I access from the top under the bonnet or do I need to jack the car up?
Also, is in the entire DV replaced or just the diaphragm located within? I'll more than likely buy from VW so I understand it'll cost me around £50.

Any further advice, images or location on a ed30 would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

You are lucky and can access the DV by simply lifting the bonnet, you may need to remove the engine cover to get a little more hand space.

Edition 30/KO4 located DV's are less prone to failure because they are not located so close to a heat source i.e the Turbo.

It's sold as a complete part so you buy the Actuator.

Also the G revision (Diaphragm) is better than the D (Piston Type) - The D has been shown to leak.

And you'll be wanting the latest version, the Revision G. Part number 06H 145 710 G, about £35 from the dealer or eBay.

Just an update on this;

I called my local VW dealer today; they said the part was £59- obviously I was surprised to say the least as numerous members have mentioned  prices around £30. It makes me think I've been quoted on the wrong part!

The chap also said that the part number 06h 145 710 G had been superseded- I didn't get the new part number but will update shortly.

Thanks.

^^^^^ the G is the latest and best version and has not been superseded, good old VW dealer!  :stupid:

Its £35. Here you go, from GermanAutoSpares eBay.....

~~ Clicky here ~~ (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dump-valve-VW-Golf-VW-Jetta-1-4T-2-0T-06F-145-710G-/251253829565?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a7fe52fbd)

EDIT By the sound of it, at £59 the dealer was referring to the revision D.
