The planes wings couldnt cope with the sheer down force - pilot must have pulled up really hard too soon snapping the wings off

Happened in 2002 that, the aircraft was nearly 40 years old and had 21,000 hours on it.
It had fatigue cracks in the central wing box that hadn't been spotted - a ticking time bomb!

Do you reckon the ground crew were saying as it took off "hey does anyone know what these 2 Bolts are for :confused:" :grin:

As it starts to break up, there is a part that flies off, just as the starboard wing detaches, that is part of the centre wing box. In my old job, I had to attend a structural integrity and airworthiness course, and this was one of the cases we studied.
It had been repaired in the past using a doubler plate, to strengthen a cracked area.
