Title: windscreen tint : Edition 30 '57 plate : blue or green ?
Post by: john_o on October 15, 2010, 02:36:16 pm
I think its green (clear) but not sure...
screen replacement (non gen VW   ) with Autoglass (Ive always had good experiences from the company on all prev cars) due tomorrow.

doing a search looks like

some early GTI's are blue
R32 are blue
all others green.

is that correct?

Believe it will be green, only the early GTi's were blue from what i've seen - there are a couple at work and are both 55 plates I think, later cars changed to green, so should include the Ed30.

Blue was very very noticeable

Think they cut the blue to save a few £££ at MY07.

Blue was quite clear, especially with rain on the windows...

The Blue tinted glass was one of the reasons i went for an early GTI, as i think it looks great with reflex silver paint.
I also wanted the 10 speakers, which i now realise have mediocre sound quality to say the least

Question, If i needed any of the blue glass replacing who would supply the new blue tinted glass?

Any of the major glass companies should do it - just make sure and tell them.  R32's were blue glass all the way though so its readily availble for mk5's.

Had my front replaced about 6 weeks ago ( early 2007 reg ) .  they did have to check when I questioned it ,  they came back with green .
Title: Re: windscreen tint : Edition 30 '57 plate : blue or green ? (answer its green)

just to complete the thread

mine was a green tint screen as everyone correctly pointed out.
fitted perfectly by a pleasant and professional Autoglass technician on my drive at home.
The glass was non VW but looks the same inc the correct rain sensor clip and 'shading' round the edges of the screen and above the rain sensor
Of note he removed a lower sealing strip (which he said causes leaks, and wasnt present on my OE VW glass once removed)
and diagonally clipped 2 lower sections of seal strip which can catch on fitment (but dont effect the seal)

surprised that the scuttle panel actually clips into the lower part of the screen.

otherwise job went well without incident  :happy2:

Not really but I recall a few people had issues with leaks after windscreen replacement.

yeah, i searched the forums before he arrived , then grilled him on how many years experience he had and if he'd done mk5 screens  :happy2:  :signLOL:

Of note this was published today with shut lines for the whole mkv
(panel gaps and shutlines from my-gti.com (http://www.my-gti.com/2722/body-panel-gaps-and-shut-lines-volkswagen-golf-mark-v))
one of which is the windscreen upper.

I know some folk have complained that the new screen can be lower than the OE one was. Mine appears lower very slightly but well within tolerance

3.5 mm +/- 0.5
