I'm surprised it's already here even that far North Damien. We're supposed to have it by Saturday AM here in the East Mids.
Btw, has your GTI morphed into a 5door Astra?! :rolleye:
-
Can you give us a progress report later on mate? I'm travelling up to Newcastle tomorrow morning for an important meeting... :scared:

I ordered a set of Nankang SV-2 last night. The price seemed pretty reasonable, and as you say, the reviews seem universally good.

I didnt even have a frozen car this morning, it was just damp!
-
No snow, just a little frosty and it got colder as I drove to work!

It has been trying to snow here in Sheffield on and off for the last few hours, but not settling and now the sun is peeking through the clouds again. Temperature is 3oC at the moment.....bbbbrrrrrrr!

Had snow for two days in Aberdeen now - roads were an absolute joke yesterday, not a gritter to be seen. Golf has been abandoned for the missus's polo today which is a yeti in the snow. Also trying to source some snow tyres but seems everyone has had the same idea locally ... :ashamed:
-
I had a text from my mum saying she had 2 inches last night.
So I called her and pointed out that it was too much information. :surprised:

5" of snow on top of the car and drive this morning.

5" of snow on top of the car and drive this morning.
Didn't make it to work today due to the amount of snow that fell through the night (a good 5-6" ).. :surprised:
All the snow must of fell between 01:30 (when I got up to go to the loo) & 04:00 when I got up for work.
And with my leaving the house @ 05:00 to get to work I was the first to move in the street and one of the first to go through the village.
Just managed to spin/crawl my way out of the village but then its a lost steap bank to get up, just far to dangerous to be driving on..... Had to turn back and ditch the car on the main front street :sad1:
The front splitter on the Eddi was like a snow plogh..
-
snow in somerset

Had a weekend of Golfing planned.. Cheers :sad1:

Thats what i don't like about the modern golfs the front is far too low for winter conditions. Its why i have a cheap banger car for the bad winter fitted with winter tyres.

Aye, I've just been on the hunt for a cheap winter hack then the weather turned before I managed to actualy get one :sad1:

Have you got winter tyres on as imo they make a huge difference to how it grips out there.

Not even a sprinkle in Hottest Hampshire.
:sad1:
....Not a lot here but very icey and the local gritters are notorious for going out after the event rather than before, especially on a Sunday!! :fighting:
There's a very high altitude (highest on whole South Coast) and very exposed hill with the A35 going over it as the only exit eastwards from here. I was going to have lunch with friends near Portsmouth tomorrow but now I doubt I'll risk it [especially as I'm a Southern Softie].

Any in Yorkshire, I'm getting a train from Cambridge on Wednesday to collect an Edition 30, and would like to drive back without snow :)
-
We've been away in Edinburgh since Friday and it's been snowing since the early hours of Saturday morning, car has been tucked away in the garage all weekend so will see how good my new winter tyres are in the morning when trying to get home!

They've had a bit in South Yorkshire as far as I'm aware. The outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday looks positively Siberian!

Just home now. Left Dundee at 10 am to head home to edinburgh. Sat in a que for 4hrs then diverted off a90 at friarton bridge. Had tea at kfc then headed home. Made as far as my rents in Dunfermline. Nightmare is not the word!!! On a plus note, wasn't in the edition 30 thankfully as I'd still be stuck there!!!! :driver: the snow in perth was outrageous!!! Almost 2foot deep!

Nightmare, I will own the car outright on Tuesday, and I can't pick it up, I could have it delivered, but as I've not seen the car and purchased it, plus I like driving a new car back makes sense to collect. Seems I may have to wait till Friday to collect :(

I couldnt even get out of Bishopbriggs today! Craziness to even try tbh but that is another story.

....Which is why I'm so glad I moved to the sunny SouthWest instead of Scotland when I retired from London. Did seriously consider Scotland as it's so beautiful but it's far too remote for my needs.

Now if it were me I wouldn' park my car there bit more snow and ice and cars coming down that slope have a good chance of hitting you while turning that bend.
-
^Whats wrong with that road, i see tarmac so it will be fine. :P
It has cleared up alot since this morning, it was not fun earlier in the day when fully covered.
I managed to get to work a 16mile trip too the far side of Newcastle at 6:30 this morning. Was an interesting trip i would not have tempted in the mk6 due to the road surface still been well covered and very slippy.
Freezing fog on the way back at 3PM was not fun either, but i left early rather than at rushhour so not to get stuck behind the townies and southeners for 2 hours while they fail at driving :P
Most people i work with from round were i live did not make it in, infact only a few did. Even the woman with the 4x4 mitsubishi pickup from the coast only made it in at 1PM
Its the lightening thats getting me. It blinded me coming down lobley hill bank this morning and i could not see for about 5 seconds was scary moment because its so bright.
There is a foot and a half of snow outside the house at the moment so getting to the main road tomorrow morning will be fun.. As i simply booted it in from the main road tonight.

Managed up to work this morning but was pretty much a no go! Down in edinburgh now, cant believe the amount of cyclists??!! :rolleye:

weve had it asll day now. roads are empty so its built up nicely. very impressed with the nankang snow SV-2 tyres.

Fortunately only a sprinkling of snow in my neck of the woods but some on the surrounding hills and the roads are icey.

^ My bird table is always kept well stocked. A Greater Spotted Woodpecker visited twice recently and feasted on the fat block.
It's very important to keep the birds fed as without enough food the cold can kill them overnight.

We had a slight suggestion of snow overnight and there was a little flurry when i arrived home this evening but thats now stopped. Which is nice.

The Mrs managed to get a lift to work from a colleague with a 4x4 but had to get droped off at the lights st the top of the village. She then had to walk down into the village and said that the police were at the top of the bank stopping people coming down it.
This was it yestersay..

Well in london we received a light sprinkle of the stuff but still enough for pretty much every train leaving victoria train station this evening to be cancelled or severe delays... :fighting:
-
It will be much worse than that photo now. Was a nightmare coming from Newcastle especially getting stuck behind a brand new SAAB 95 which stopped our progress up the banks . We had to go via Stanley were the main part is nice and clear but as soon as you leave its very slippy or just white. Those hail stones that came down made the road much worse too. Tomorrow i hope it does not snow as i need to try and hammer my car back into shape so i can shut the door :ashamed:
-
I managed to dig the Eddie out for the first time since Sat morning and went to Consett and it was realy bad up your way

I wish it was that little here on the main road. I have spent 8 hours solid moving snow just to get the car to the main road as it kept getting beached and will not grip until it hits tarmac. I had to dig tracks all the way to the tarmac and stop every foot to clear the pile of snow in front of the car. I went back to try and get our other cars out and i was back to square one as it had snowed so much all day. I give up...
Northumberland is gritting and there snow plows are set to 5mm off the tarmac. Durhams either are just driving round or they are set so high its doing next to nothing for cars as everyone i have spoke too said the car were bottoming out. If you come along the A1 its fine until you get to the county Durham area were its white. Durham county are taking the piss.
Oh and in those 8 hours i spent more or less at the road side i did not see one gritter, or any snow plow doing anything.
-
I knew it was a wast of time trying to dig the cars out as the whole of Derwentside is just a joke..
I was meant to be on night shift toningt but they was no way I was going to get to Seaham, then back in the morning. So we went to the Sun Inn for a few beers instead :drinking:
I've even bought a cheapo winter hack but cant get to Consett to pck it up
This is so much worse thanlast year....
-
I think we need a group buys on snow throwers and winter tyres
-
Think we also need to get onto the council to get the gritters down here. Only seen 1 since Friday.
They either come from Whickham and stop at the Pack or nothing at all from our way :sad1:

Nightshift and the state of the roads is not the best combo i agree.
Im dayshift (7:30 start) at the far side of Newcastle and i did not make it today. Trip home on Tuesday night took over 2 hours and was scary, plus i had to walk down into the village.
Bus is no better tonight they stopped at pickering nook and everyone had to walk the rest.
lol at the photos above.

:signLOL:
Those did the rounds last year..

Are they any less funny though? Nope! I have ideas now!! It's such a shame I'm fully booked at the moment because If not, they'd be a 12 foot cock on my front garden!

Mostly rained away round this area this morning, :jumpmove:
-
.
Woke up around 10am and looked out of my bedroom window... All snow gone! Rained away :pomppomp:. I only hope it doesn't freeze tonight.
-
Its starting to melt alittle bit today. :congrats: This ment the 2" thick ice under the 24 inch+ of snow is no longer welded to the tarmac. So i spent 5 hours clearing the drive and paths. Its nice to see tarmac at last.

The way my back is in pain now i could well be stuck in a similar position.

The soft snow already disappeared two days ago. The hard frozen slush has now been melted by the rain. Very few remnants left behind.
-
Slush in Surrey but looks as if it might freeze again tonight
-
I think im going to cry, the snows on its way back and im just about crippled from clearing the last lot.
-
the snow is gone, to be replaced by sheet ice. Winter tyres or not, its lethal on my street now

I didn't drive anywhere for work last week due to the snow. I thought I'd be alright today, but the -7.5 degree temperature this morning still got me......
About 7:20am this morning, I was on the M62, at the summit (highest motorway in the UK) when my car decided it didn't want any coolant so wee'd it all out :sad1:
It was -5.5 when I stopped and let me tell you, it was damn cold sitting for 2 hours at that temperature with no heating, waiting for a recovery truck, my toes were numb!
-
West Yorkshire has been OK, but my parents are in Northumberland, just north of Morpeth, and they've barely been out for the last two weeks. I think it's getting a bit tedious for them!

I live in West Yorkshire and my parents live in Northumberland too :happy2:
I'm heading up there on Friday for the weekend so hopefully things won't get bad again!
Oh, the wheel bags arrived today, very nice thanks mate :drinking:

where do u live mate?

Live near(or so I thought) Glasgow mate, 7 hours being 1 hour waiting for the bus, 6 hours being stuck on the motorway on the bus then 1 hour to walk home, good times. One of my colleagues who lives like a 20 mins away from me drove to and from work took them 13 hours!!!

....Journeys that bad are ridiculous.
What happens if you don't go to work when the weather is so bad? I'm sure I wouldn't bother. Perhaps if people refused to go to work in such conditions the govn'ment might be obliged to fund more extensive measures to make the roads passable.
-
I would just pull the coil plug, fain breakdown, dump the car and walk home.
-
.
I would phone and say you're stuck at home due to the weather and is there any work you can do for them at home via email etc.
Even if you're not absolutely stuck they're not likely to call your cards in the current weather conditions everyone is most are facing.
-
Well office ended up being shut I assume we still get paid, not sure tbh my second day at the new place too
-
I've been reading this thread with some bemusement, originally with a bit of added jealousy :signLOL: down here in the South West we've had more than our fair share of frosts and it hasn't got much above freezing point for what seems like weeks now, but we actually only had one or two days of snow; about 1cm where I live that lasted 24 hours or so before it initially turned into sheet ice then was quickly washed away by rain.
It seems almost unbelieveable that only a couple of hundred miles away as the crow flies you're up to your necks in snow.
As for Robin's comments about people staying away from their jobs en masse to spur the authorities to do something more pro-active. Sound thinking but, as ever, it's one of those British things in that we do lots of moaning but we soldier on regardless. Our friends just the other side of the Channel would have done something to force their government to get their arses in gear by now.
Another slight issue is the way employers will treat staff, so many people's working conditions are now slipping back to good old Victorian standards where an employer simply won't pay you if you don't show up. Not too bad for those who have laptops and can work from home, or those maybe on higher rate tax who can afford an odd day without pay but for the general working man and woman who are hourly paid, they simply can't afford to take days off willy nilly.
We need a bit more of the French attitude over here!
-
Well office ended up being shut I assume we still get paid, not sure tbh my second day at the new place too
....I don't know what the employement laws are on stoppage due to weather - Anyone know?
Even if you're not paid, you'll survive. Why not relax at home rather than risk getting your car damaged or abandoned - Take a break. People who work don't get enough time for themselves anyway.

Thanks RR, luckily for me, I don't have to drive the car in as its right in the city centre, you should seen how many abandoned cars on the motorway!

Decided to make a mess in the snow with the car earlier!!

-
snowing heavy in medway, but its been raining all day so its not going to lay for a fair while

We had a quick flurry of it in the West Midlands. Coated buildings and vehicles in a fine layer of snow, with none on the ground except ice.

-
snowing hard in uxbridge hoping not to get trapped at work! :scared:

Heavy dump in South Somerset, just started again too!
:tree: :tree:
I love this weather. :santa:
-
Last night there was a smidgeon of snow on the pavements. This morning, there was a fair whack. It seemed to have settled so we decided to set out (empty fridge and no sweets). Drove out fine, parked up at the supermarket.
Came back out. First thing that peeved me off is that despite an entire rear car park that was empty, some frikkin learner driver decided to park right next to me! Second thing was the snow. If that learner corsa wasn't next to me, it'd have been worth taking a pic. Half-inch layer of snow on the roof, despite the fact that we'd only been in for forty minutes. Had to clear the windows and lights all round and by the time I'd gotten back in, it was starting to snow up the windows again!
Driving home wasn't too bad despite the PS2 tyres but trying to reverse park into the garage was a nightmare. There's no "higher gear, low revs" for reverse! Managed to get it in and it's staying in the garage. I'll walk where I'll need to go. I'd cleared the drive of a few inches of snow but it was all back by the time I'd returned home.
I'm gonna put a couple of supported carrier bags outside and let the snow collect so I can builds me a snow man!
-
Nowt at 6:30 but when I finally dragged myself out my pit there was a good 3-4 inches. NE Hants. :happy2:

This was us at 8am this morning, I'd been out in the GTI and then it snowed again...... :xmassmiley:

Got 2-3 inches in north and south london.
Had a lovely drive from watford to dartford this morning in the snow. The quattro system on the RS4 is impressive. Saw a BMW do a pendulum on itself and then a honda not being able to stop in time and ramming it

I wouldnt risk the london/dartford traffic tomorrow,

Dunno what it's like on the surrounding hills though. Looks cold and windy out there but I have no reason to go outside - The bird cafe is still well stocked.
