Title: Just crashed... Any advice?
Post by: SeanyK on November 28, 2010, 10:13:58 pm
Hey folks... Before we start im ok and no one else was involved thankfully.

A blind give way junction (notorious) has caught me out, and last minute braking / turning helped avoid a tree (!) but I smashed into a high grass kerb, then a pole!

It looks like just front bumper damage if im honest, the splitter is hanging off and the bumper hanging off the right hand side. The right hand side headlamp is a bit loose (is that to do with the bumper being loose though?)

Not sure if it's worth going through insurance? I am going to ask a few local repair places tommorow.

These cars are like tanks it seems, I really thought it would be a lot worse but the bumper / grill has taken the force of it.

Glad your ok mate!

Headlight shouldnt be loose unless theres more damage under the bumper?

All depends how much your excess is?? You could source second hand parts and get them sprayed up but to be honest itll still cost you a few quid even if you have to repair the existing.

Hi Sean
Glad your ok, probably worth getting a few quotes before going through the insurance

Hey folks thanks for the replies - Yeah I guess I will get a couple of quotes, then may just put it through insurance, i'd rather not obviously as I know it doesn't help everyones premiums! But I do have protected NCB thankfully.

Last time, someone drove into my old car, I wasn't in it, it was only mild panel damage and cost £900!
My excess is about £550

Glad your okay Sean,  But as for repair they'll all quote you stupid amounts,  If you have just got standard parts i.e none xenon lights and standard golf bumper,  it'll be cheaper to buy second hand parts and fix it yourself.

I had a car go into the side of me last year, unfortunately for me the other car didn't stop and I had to stump up the cost myself,  any way I hunted a few breakers on ebay and managed to get the parts,  front drivers door, front wing, and wing mirror and in all I had it back looking good the next day for £100.

Again glad your okay mate and no one else involved.

Hey Darren thank you mate,

Is this the right bumper?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-GTI-04-08-MK5-FRONT-BUMPER-Gti-GT-/370337974951?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5639dd0aa7

Would I need a splitter etc? I guess I also need the GTI grill bit (with the red surround as that's cracked)

My fogs are OK, and I don't have Xenons.

All standard stuff as far as I know.

Just found this;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-GTI-FRONT-BUMPER-MK5-PAINTED-249-99-2006-08-/130416785309?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e5d72379d

Seems a good deal? States 2006-2008 but are the MK5 GTI's all the same bumpers from 04-09 anyway ??

I'd still need the grill for about £50 but considering the above link is £270 for a bumper and splitter all painted aint bad?

I guess I might need to buy some screws and stuff though in case any have broken off?

Sean yes that's the bumper just make sure its genuine and every thing that,s not broke on yours should go straight onto the new bumper.

The main grille should be cheap enough to get and you can buy a repair kit for the headlights from VW for around £20, if one of your headlights has cracked or broken a lug off the light just buy the repair kit.

It will cost more than £550.00 to fix it through a garage as labour rate will prob be £45.00 per hour at least.

It may well be that you should get it up on a ramp and get all of the bumper assembly removed though to check that there is no further damage behind which you cant see, as cars these days are designed to almost "spring back" and often a boot floor for eg can be creased even if the rear bumper looks not too bad.

Hey folks,

OK i've just gone out to have a proper look at it.

Basically, i've taken the lower splitter off, as thats broken, the grill 'red' surround is snapped, i've taken that off, the grill itself is ok but broken at the screw mounts.

The front bumper definately needs replacing as it's scuffed and bent in at the front. I also need two wheel arch guards as they have dissapeared!

The radiator etc all things like that seem fine,

Everything else seems OK although now without the front splitter it looks a bit exposed under there, hope its ok to drive.

Wow. Horrendous news. Good to hear you're well. Cars can always be repaired but lives can't be replaced. I think that since nobody's property/vehicle/person was involved, you don't need to notify insurance. IF you did go through insurance, it's not only the excess you pay but also the loaded premium for the next five years or so.

I would also be checking for rad leaks, as you may have pushed the whole thing back a bit, putting pressure on the connections.  :happy2:

Sean,

From what your saying you'll need a new bumper £220 + VAT & the front grills on ebay are £50 - £60. If you've damaged the carrier your looking at £180 + VAT. (These prices are for genuine parts)

What colour is your car? As I know of a black bumper for sale.

If you chose not geniune, prices will be cheaper but the bodyshop costs will be the same.

Glad your ok and taking it well, these things happen to everyone.

It may look like superficial damage but a trained eye will know if legs need straightening etc..  Finding a decent bodyshop will be key, get at least a couple of quotes.

As has already been mentioned parts aren't that much and the bay can yield bargains. Best to get quotes for new parts, beware there are a lot of pattern parts around.

Hope it all works out for you.

Hi guys,

Just thought i'd update!

I took it to an accident repair centre, decent guys actually, came out and showed me a few things I'd never have noticed!

In summary;

Front bumper & grills need replacing
Radiator behind bumper smashed at the bottom - he wasn't sure if that was the AC rad if it was he said it needs regassing etc and all that.
Headlight bracket broken (apparantly only come as part of a new headlight not separately?)
Passenger side front wheel potentially damaged

He then said until they take the bumper off they can't tell, as there are foam pieces behind there etc that they can see what damage has been done / if any structural damage any bent frame etc

When he said that, to me, £££ signs appeared in my head, so I just called my insurance and will just get it sorted under that.

I did ask if they could diamond-cut refurb all my wheels whilst they are fixing the broken one! (they all needed doing anyway!) So we will see if they can do me a discount or something on that.

It's a pain, but there you go!

It's not like for like courtesy car which I understand, although when she said 'something like a Cinqucento' alarm bells were ringing, but thankfully the company said only cars 2 years old or newer are used (which rules out that!)
... Oh and a £50 fuel deposit is a bit of a joke! I will have to put fuel in the courtesy car anyway so why am I giving them an extra £50 lol

In case you don't!

I had the displeasure of having to go through a courtesy car (via RAC). The RAC bit was brill. The rentacar or whoever they are were a bit of a nightmare. They gave me a brand new fiesta, barely 700 miles on the clock, and told me it was diesel, so I drove it very slowly. Bit annoyed when, at the petrol station, I struggled to try and fit the diesel nozzle into the car. Turns out it was petrol! The fuel cap states it's petrol, but all of the paperwork, including the keyring all had diesel. The muppets had to confirm with the Ford dealers down the road from where they got the car that it was petrol!

You can get a headlamp repair kit.

Let me know which headlamp/Bracket as I have a few stashed in the garage.

couple of things to think about before you pull the trigger on the insurance:

1) Excess
2) as has been quoted they will load your premium for the next five years, of any car you drive, this happens even if a no fault claim
3) I was test driving a mk 6 R today and the sales man asked if my car had ever had an insurance recorded accident, not an accident, if it is insurance recorded (not a cat but just std accident) that would affect the part ex they would give me. If it had been in accident and repaired without the insurance being involved then they will buy the car as no accident damage and sell it as such as it will come up clean on the insurance repaired register!

worth knowing!

anyway, may still be worth getting the insurance involved even with the above costs

Hey guys,

Yeah I did initially want to avoid claiming (I do have a non-fault claim from 2007)

Once I added up the cost of a bumper, all the grill pieces, lower splitter, wheel arch linings, radiator (if a/c regassing etc etc) it was a lot more than the 550 excess I have.

It's a real pain I know, but at least this way I just give them the car and let them deal with it, and also there could be worse damage than the above.

Will it be repaired with genuine VW parts or INSURANCE approved parts??

Good question! It's one of these RAC approved places so probably Insurance approved parts!

They are BSI Kitemark approved whatever that is!

I remember when my car broke down. I was given a 1.2 litre fiesta. The return to the GTI was such a huge improvement. It was like rediscovering the GTI all over again!

Just make sure you give the car a good going over when you get it back mate.

My Dads old motor got repaired by the insurance companys 'approved' bodyshop and seriously it looked like it had been prepped and painted by a bunch of 3 year olds!! The paint match was non existent, they had used metallic instead of pearl (black) and the prep looked like it had been done with a yard broom in a sand storm!!!

Dont accept it unless your 110% happy. Its much more difficult if you drive it away and find stuff later.

Its easy to be excited about having the car back after driving around in the corsa and end up missing things that will become obvious after a few days of having the GTI back. Not teaching you to 'suck eggs' mate I just dont want you to have anymore hassle than youve already had!!  :happy2:

Hey folks!

Assessors just called me to let me know the damage.

It's mostly front, at a cost of £2500

New front bumper & grill(s) & various undertrays
New intercooler required
New Air Conditioning condensor (?)

A few other bits here and there...
