Title: Speed Blue Cupra TSI - * Trackday Pics *
Post by: jon-tfsi on December 17, 2010, 12:30:09 pm
Hello guys, have had the car for a few months now and not had a build thread before so thought I should get the ball rolling before the mods begin
OK its not a Golf but the lure of a K04 powered Cupra was too much after having a K03 Leon TFSI Sport.

The car is more or less standard at the moment other than a Decat, and am enjoying it that way until January when a few choice mods will be going on.

The car was 4 months old when I bought it and had been the Managers car at Taunton Seat. I bought it over the phone without seeing it which was a bit of a gamble. They said it had 10K on the clock and no options but the price was fantastic so I parted with my savings in one shot. A moment of madness looking back, but i got a very nice surprise when the car was delivered . . . . . It only had 7.5k on the clock so didnt need the free service I had asked for, but the best bit was the factory options that they had failed to advertise . . . . Xenons, Parking sensors and Bluetooth . . . . . Wehey !!

The aim is to get to Stage 2+ very soon.

A few photo's of the car shortly after it was delivered, and one of the previous Leon that was a great car.

Looks lovely, but are you sure its  a TSI though.  They write on the Golf R, Scirrocco R, Cupra R engines TSI but they are actually TFSI.  Same engine as the S3.

I didnt think VAG had had fitted a k04 to the TSI yet, hence why the others reused the K04 TFSI

Yep your quite correct Si. Its a CDLD engine which is a TFSI. Its just the Vag rebranding to confuse everybody.

As I wanted to keep the warranty as intact as possible, fitting a TBE exhaust was not going to be the wisest option.
I had a spare standard downpipe kicking around that i had removed the cats from. This would have to be the next best thing . . . . never going to be as good as a full TBE but the best solution for me.

The first cat thats the biggest restriction IMO was removed with a hammer and chisel. Its ceramic so very brittle and quite easy to remove. The second cat was neatly cut open with a 7" grinder along the weld, the ceramic catalyst removed in the same way as the first. The can was very neatly welded back together by Peacho our welder. The end result is a downpipe that looks completely standard on the outside but flows much better.

Now its fitted you can feel the turbo kick in that little bit sooner and a bit harder too, even with standard software. The exhaust note is a bit sweeter and maybe 10 - 15% louder.
I had a Milltek TBE on the previous Leon but it always had fitment issues and knocked on the underpan. This obviously fits like a glove which I'm very happy about

Love the blue :happy2:

Thanks   The colour never fails to amaze me. It looks different from every angle and every day depending on the conditions. Im glad i didnt have to pay for the paint option. Still it was a much cheaper option than it would have been from Audi or the likes.

There has been a couple of minor changes in the interior. Would have loved factory SAT-NAV but i had my own cheapo Navigon unit that I have been very happy with. The windscreen is flippin miles away from the driver on the Leon, which made touchscreen systems a pain to use.
The Navigon unit has been mounted on the cowling in front of the instrument cluster, making it much easier to operate the touchscreen. Its also much easier to see as its central in the field of vision and there are no wires flapping about any more.
I also fitted some Aluminium Instrument Rings and half the Seat Alu door kit to the speakers to brighten things up a bit.

Always a worry of mine the clutch, as its expensive to replace . . . . . can always be replaced with something more substantial  :happy2:

I guess yours is starting to slip??

Aye, slipping at circa 5k, mainly in 4th and above. Its not too bad when the car is hot though.

Hi Jon
Nice motor,you do like these Seat's don't you....Lovely colour(was in 2 minds myself)
I've gone for a track grey FR DSG (diesel cos of the miles I do).
Got a set of white Pavonis(being done black with the mirrors) off the bay,and some new bits...Cupra roof spoiler, aero skirts,Black grille.
Also contemplating the "R" diffuser and exhaust.
Revo will follow of course..

Wehey welcome to the dark side Monk. Have heard the CR's remap really well, am sure you will have it looking mint in no time.
You cant beat the SEAT's for value. Would have loved an ED30 but couldnt justify paying the same for a car thats 2 years older . . . . whats that all about ??? LoL.
Dya want some super lightweight Stoptech brakes for £400 ?? Or some TT bottom arms ??
Jon if you ever want a new RNS510 I will have a converted VW that is now a SEAT, I also have the proper faceplate for your car...

Darren :happy2:
Thanks for the offer Darren. Am concentrating on performance for the time being. Might be in touch further down the line though  :happy2: . Am really happy with the Navigon unit at the moment. I looks better in the flesh honest.

Brakes... May contemplate some in future but only if I feel it really needs them.
I'll see how the standard ones cope with the revo when I get it.
It's only got 400 on the clock...
Springs goin on tomorrow if I can be bothered, and de badge it.

Finally got around to fitting the BSH/Std maf Intake today after a series of hangovers and the cold weather had put me off for a few weeks.
Just a bit of extra trimming of the original airbox and a bit of 70mm silicone hose was required. All of an hours work that i have been putting off for a long time now :ashamed:

A home made heat shield from the previous Leon was added and some heat reflective tape that i borrowed from work. The BSH airbox could maybe do with a second cold air feed which I'm going to look into. Im not convinced the single cold air supply that the BSH uses is enough for these engines.

It looks better than i thought it would. Its SO quiet too, just what i was after. There is slightly more turbo whistle at 4k and a bit more growl from about 5K onwards.
Hardly any noise at all when letting off the gas either, which was a pleasant surprise. Just the one very quiet 'tshhh' when forced at about 4K.
It feels a fair bit quicker on the road but there is never going to be a huge gain with stock software.

All ready for Revo Stage 2+ now Wehey!  :jumping:

The software was paid for a couple of weeks ago when the Revo offer was on . . . . just got to get my lazy bones up to PDT now and see what she's capable of.

Should soon know for sure . . . . . Hopefully on DD rollers in a couple of weeks then again at Motoscope on the 29th. Its only numbers but should give some idea of whether the setup works. Minimal mods for Stg2+ but thats what I wanted, just hope it all works in harmony lol

PDT uses Dyno dynamics anyway. What fuel pump are you using, and is it on stock IC.  Id be tempted to do the same as you with the exhaust.  stealth all the way

Stock IC for now. I had the Twintercooler on the previous Leon and was very impressed. I will probably go for the same again further down the line.
Autotech Pump Internals went in a couple of weeks back. I would have preferred an APR pump but couldnt justify nearly £500 extra. Again I have had the Autotech pump before and was very impressed so chose the same again . . . if only I had known I would have another Leon !!! Intercooler, Fuel Pump, Intake, Milteck TBE, Eibach's all sold . . . . . oh well. Fresh start and like you say - Stealth all the way :drinking:

Nice results John and certainly consistant with mine when on Dave's rollers, albeit in the summer and with a Dbilas Hybrid Intake (stock IC like yours though and on B8 T5 F6)..

The scale on mine is a bit out (but you get the idea)..

Love the stealth idea though mate and that's a proper tidy job on that intake too..  :happy2: Oh and I bet the intake isn't so quiet now..  :jumping:

Nice results John and certainly consistant with mine when on Dave's rollers, albeit in the summer and with a Dbilas Hybrid Intake (stock IC like yours though)..

The scale on mine is a bit out (but you get the idea)..

Love the stealth idea though mate and that's a proper tidy job on that intake too..  :happy2:

We were looking at your graph today and noticed how similar the figures were. I think Dave was rescaling your graph as i left  :happy2:

I was a bit concerned about the stealth intake and exhaust not being up to the job on a stage 2+ car. Im over the moon with the results though

the stock exhaust is 2.5 inch  :happy2:

Mine is deffo 2.25" ID I measured it with a vernier caliper

like it, why buy a £1000 TBE when a decatted std exhaust gives the same results.  not going to mention scaling...

I cant knock the K03 Leon though it was a great car.

I can't tell you how happy I am with this car though. Can't stop smiling

Oh and I bet the intake isn't so quiet now..  :jumping:

Yup its deffinately got louder since the remap !!

I had fitment and build quality issues with the last aftermarket exhaust I used. The car may have made another 5-10 bhp with a Milltek/Blueflame, probably not and I may never know. If I still own the car come MOT time I might look into a Pipewerx DP.

As you wont be taking your new motor anywhere near an MOT centre in the near future  :happy2: I would highly reccomend this Sy. There appears to be a few Mk5 Ibiza owners waiting for an aftermarket exhaust to be released and stage 2 software. I'm sure you could tap an OEM downpipe from one of them for a nice price to have a tinker with.  If a 2.25" exhaust can flow sufficient for 350 bhp then Im sure the std exhaust on the Fabia VRS will be ok when modified.

im already looking into it mate   the pre cat will be removed for sure :happy2:, but its a good idea to buy someone elses to mess up lol.

How much did it cost to get it cut open and re welded.  Specialist welder required or just generic?
Title: Re: Speed Blue Cupra TSI
Post by: jon-tfsi on January 08, 2011, 08:14:33 pm
I bought my Spare downpipe off ebay and the seller turned out to be my next door neighbour . . . . saved a fortune on postage Lol.

Its more ecenomical to buy a spare as you have more time to mess about with it. That way you can just take your other downpipe to the cheapo tyre and exhaust place who will fit something like this for cherrybobs. Its a bit off to ask them to remove your exhaust then start attacking it with tools on their workshop floor making a right mess then handing it back to them to refit lol.

You can cut the second cat open with a grinder with a cutting disc no probs ( best to mark both sides of the cut line before hand so the thing can be welded back together exactly as it came apart. 2 centrepop marks will do )
A place that I work at from time to time has a really good welder. He put 4 tack welds on and made sure everything was ligned up nice and square, then Tig welded it back together. I think Mig or Stick welds would have been ok but he opted for Tig as it would be the neatest. Mig would also be neat and Stick would be the hardest to get a neat job, the cat is double skinned and each skin is about 2mm thick so an amature welder could easily blow a hole in the exhaust.

The fabrication lads at your place could easily do a job like this I'm sure.

Be sure to wear a dust mask when smashing the Ceramic cat out though. Lots of dust and its not nice on your throught.

very nice car mate !! and i might have to steal the idea about using the standard downpipe !! :D

quick question, where did you get the gauge rings from ?? ive been looking for a while but havent found anything !!  :D

Cheers, was yours the healthy Stage 1 at Motoscope last week? The exhaust seems to work just fine  The gauge rings were from ebay and about £45 delivered. Very difficult to fit though !! A very tight fit ! I think SEAT used to do their own for approx £75 but they didnt include the vent rings. They should still be available and Im pretty sure the ebay ones are still available too. They brighten up the instrument cluster no end

cheers for the info about the rings, ill have a look now and see what i can see !!! and ive heard quite a few people have had touble fitting the rings !!

Wow wow wo dont jinx me Damo  :signLOL:
Its been fine so far i think Im one of the lucky ones. I only do about 3k a year at the moment and some of the other Stage 2+ guys on the SEAT forum have done 20k+ without clutch problems.

Have you changed your clutch yet?

Its been a while since this thread has been posted on, only done a few tweeks but i might have to do a small update . . . .

I have surprised myself at how I've kept the mods to the minimum so far. Must be getting all sensible at last lol.
Keep considering an intercooler, lowering, hybrid, WALK, TT arms, but then think why fix whats not broke?

It goes well, handles well and has given me no headaches so far so its going to stay as it is for now. The only thing that niggles me is the ride height but i can live with that as Im not so keen on firm suspension any more . . . great round the twisties but not so good our poor roads these days. Ha ha I must be getting old . .. . .

Thankyou for the idea of keeping the standard downpipe, I will be doing this to mine and getting a stage 2 remap ASAP.

What about fitting the Aero spoiler and sideskirts next mate? Think it would look even better with these.
