Ok guys, 2nd attempt, and hopefully a better data capture. Apoligise to people who may already voted, i would please ask kindly if they would re-submit.
This is for all Mk5/Mk6 GTi's, Edition 30's and Pirelli's.
This is purely to see if there is a any link to whether there was a potential issues with mech's units after a certain age, and may help any potential buyers with no VW warranty to decide whether or not a dsg car is likely or unlikely to suffer a failure.
I would stress also that even if you have a dsg car, to vote no issues so it gives a better idea to all.
We have over 2500 members, 50/50 split over Manual/dsg cars. Hopefully may give us some clues.
I thank you :happy2:

I will just add a caveat for my 05 no issue vote and thats no issue that im aware of as the second owner I havn't checked up to see if a mechatronic was replaced under warranty with the first owner. :happy2:
-
.
I'm an 05-plate but 06-build spec, so which would you like me to 'vote' under, Steve?

As said in your previous poll thread: Twas a hiccup rather than total failure but VW replaced anyway and at the time were prepared unofficially to do so outside warranty.

Voted now. 08 No issues. 74k miles
I am going to get it checked though when it's next in the garage just to see what they say as i've never had DSG before so could be driving round thinking it's normal

07- No issues :congrats:

....I think you'd probably realise for yourself if your DSG wasn't working normally. Some can be slightly clunky when cold and changing from 1st > 2nd gear, or when cold and into reverse. I always let my engine warm up for several minutes before selecting reverse to exit my batcave and it stops any clunk.
I have to say though that everything feels a lot smoother anyway since my Revo DSG remap.
Regular DSG servicing also helps a lot.
-
Well done Steve for doing this, it will be ineresting to see what a large poll shows up. Although no issues with mine to-date I have voted again as requested.
As you are probably aware in America most of the DSG owners have been offered a 100,00 miles or 10 year warranty against the failure of the mechatronics unit by VW of America. ( Apparently nothing to do with VW UK )
I queried this with VW UK and they assured me that my car ( 57 reg Ed30.....DSG ) There was no known issues relating to it. I did get them to put it in writing which they did. All the correspondense I have kept in relation to this.
I wish all forum members a very happy Christmas. :santa:

May 08 EDITION 30 BUILD NUMBER 2260 Mechatronics failure at 12,500 miles

I have a 10 plate 09 build. No problems up to now 1700 miles in.

07 plate and no issues here, car is at about 48k

05 with no replacement.
However I'm not sure all is well. (So if you fancy having a go in mine Steve, I'm in Southampton.)
When you put it into drive at the lights, for example, you have to wait a second or two before pulling away or you get a clunk that I wouldn't expect. I have an Audi TTS with the same box which doesn't do it, maybe it's a VW feature!
Incidentally, if you've bought secondhand your local dealer will tell you if your car had a replacement before you bought it. :happy2:

Mine did this Tony before service, and I also did a basic setting reset as per Ross wiki and that helped the situation alot. Also do you put into drive while still on the brake and then accelerate or switch to drive while coming off the brake?

Hi Steve,
I have had problems but mine was the gearbox computer not the mechantronics. How should I vote or not vote?

No issues here with my 06 dsg box.

I thought that but when I enquired with VW I was told it is an ecu for the gearbox not the mechantronics that was changed on my car.

Yup I have the Blue Bullet Petrol vRS which is manual and the Silver Slingshot Diseasel which is a DSG. Same box (02E?) as the VW ones :happy2:

I still interpret them as the same - It's all one unit, see the pic in the link below - But I stand to be corrected:

I was told by VW UK. My car is still covered by a genuine VW extended warranty which it came with when I bought from a VW dealer.

2008 57 reg ED30 here, jerky when setting off and in reverse plus stalling in 'D' intermittently, new mechatronic fitted at 27K, on 43K now and all is still well..

Keep up the votes guys, interesting so far, and perhaps this could be stickied somewhere mods for the time being? :drinking:

:happy2:
Much better! now all we need is a statistically valid number of entries.
-
Not sure what to put for my 07 dsg, as it did lurch every now and again and has done it to me once reversing up an incline, but most of the symptoms have gone at present, perhaps mines a self healer :jumping:
-
Interesting so far to see, thats theres a spike in the 57/08 GTi's with mech's replacements ,and very little failures from 55/06/56/07 plates.
Keep the results coming in, the more the better.
Might be lucky and get this stickied if ever we reach over 1000 votes

....Definitely the more votes the more indicative the poll results. But unfortunately, even though this is a very popular forum with a significant membership, it still only represents a relatively small percentage of the UK's DSG owners, so the results can only be a snapshot. It's still interesting and worth doing though :happy2:

Vote submitted, no issues with mine. 2008/57, 38k miles. :happy2:

I drive it the same as I do the TTS, but that doesn't clunk!
I'll get my mate to do a reset with his Vagcom and see if that makes a difference. I did have a DSG service at VW in Southampton, although it was a bit late at 45,000 miles, together with a service and cambelt change. I presume they take it for a test drive afterwards??? They didn't comment on the 'box, nor did an Indie that has since done some work on it.
Also, my wife doesn't have an issue with it, nor my son, so maybe it is just me being ham-fisted footed, so maybe it is just me, so I'll take up SaintSteve's offer to try it, particularly as this is his thread. :congrats:
All that said, I love the DSG ( and the S-Tronic in the TTS) even if it does need some work on it. :notworthy: I don't think I would buy a car with one of those stirry-stick things again!! :indifferent:

Hi all
2006 56 plate - gti , mechatronic unit failure, vw UK have just declined my claim as the previous owner did not have the dsg oil changed at 40000 miles, we purchased the car at 45000 miles and joined this forum, found out about the service and problems and had it done straight away !
Now we have a car that kangaroos itself around when pulling away or reversing ! Very dangerous especially when trying to park. Currently on the search for a way to fix the problem cheaper than the £1400 vw Stockport want to fix.
Going to call tps today and see what price they will give me as I have recently set up my business with them for bigger discounts than are already available.

:jumping: :surprised: :sad1:
That is TERRIBLE! shame on VW UK!
-
Is the DSG service at 40,000 miles specifically on mileage or is it time related also, like the cambelt. only on 13,500 miles ( just over 3 years old now ) but know next service it will be cambelt and waterpump. Thanks Chris
-

I was quoted 4 years for DSG service still havent done 40k in mine but the service provided an improvement, Shaun T_T did an interesting post on this you should track down and read.
As for 5,000 mile discrepancy thats ridiculous did you buy it from VW or indie?
-
The car was bought privately and had been serviced by VW Liverpool, so I called VW liverpool and asked why the DSG service had not been done at the time it was serviced at 40000 miles. They said, the customer had declined the service to be done due to cost.
My argument with VW UK was that the car is now unsafe to drive as lurches into walls etc when trying to park, and if, as VW UK said the claim should be declined because the service was not done, then in effect they are saying the service is the reason the mechatronic unit failed. Then they should not allow the customer to decline this to be done at 40000 it should be mandatory as it directly links to the safety of the vehicle.
I have told VW UK i am going to trading standards and the media, they said they are not intereseted and claim declined !
:sad1: :sad1:

You are spot on with your assessment and i would not stop harassing them until they sorted it, it's disgraceful of them to not fix it when they know full well the mech units are dodgy.

This is the kind of thing dissuading me from a VW warranty!
....There was a thread discussing extended warranty some time ago and IIRC it's not worth it and less and less gets included each 12 month period. Even my friendly VW dealer quietly advised me not to bother.

2007 56 plate 28k miles. No problems here. :happy2:
Although i'm the 3rd owner, not sure if the 1st owner had it replaced. Not replaced while with the 2nd owner.
Would VW dealers have records of what work has been done?

....Yes they would have records. You just need to know which VW dealer the first owner used and the handbook would tell you that. :santa:
If I ever sell my GTI, the new owner will get a very fat stack of paperwork covering all the history.

Voted - 57 Plate (import)...box started going after just under 2 years. Took it to local VW dealer (Alan Day) as thought it was still in warranty (you only get 2 yrs from manufacturer as std in EU). Had a bit of a shocker though, as warranty starts from when car sold in original country, and as it took about a month to get to UK I was out of warranty by about 2 weeks :surprised:. Read the small print!!
Dealers were incredibly helpful (with some very GTi friendly members of the service dept) & very sympathetic of the warranty date bombshell. Together built a case that it was clearly a known fault with the model (based largely on evidence on sites like this one) & that the warranty was largely irrelevant as goods sold were therefore not of an acceptable standard. VW didn't argue too much & made an offer of 100% of parts cost and 75% labour (I think that is right, might have been other way around, but either way it was good enough that I took it with gratitude...in fact I bit their hand off) on the full mechatronics replacement and replacement front bushes at the same time (which had also completely gone).
My mood went as follows:-
Car playing up...looks like mechatronics per the boards
Oh well - warranty still valid, better get to garage (what a pain, time off work) :sad1:
What do you mean warranty just expired??? :surprised:
Oh God, the bill :jumping:
Worth arguing the case...guys here seem quite helpful :scared:
How much are they offering off the bill?? :congrats: :notworthy:
Thanks VW and Alan Day - both now have a new loyal customer (despite problems wth original product) :happy2:
I love my car :xmassmiley:

58 Plate, Pirelli
Never had a problem or had a letter for a recall (one of my colleagues recieved a letter asking them to go to the dealers for a check).
It does get a little jumpy when sat in traffic in 1st and pulling away, anyone have this? Is it normal?
