Title: Rear brake caliper piston wind back?
Post by: dnLcal on January 05, 2011, 06:26:09 pm
Hi,

Not sure but 99% sure it will still apply with our brake calipers but...

I have replaced brake pads and discs on friends and families VWs over the past few years.

And on my step musms 54plate bora TDI and my dads 03 plate caravelle TDI i have experienced a problem while trying to wind the piston back into the caliper.

I use needle nose pliers (and has always been fine) but with the two above mentioned cars the piston would not wind back in, if you rotate it anticlockwise it will come out further.

After much swearing and rotating it did go back in but 90% of my time was spent rotating the piston and nothing happening.

I had the brake resivoir open this didnt seem to help. but once it did start going back in it was a dream.

Any help on helping me understand this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Cal

I did some on an Octavia vRS last week using a Draper windback tool - No problems.

I have found that you need to apply a little pressure to the piston, as you rotate it/wind it back.

This is what I used -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fecx.images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F41T1XY6XFKL._SL500_AA300_.jpg&hash=439be3581b3587a6c9d263ea08a1523554df7b0a)

As QD says it will apply pressure as it winds

Or just buy a halfrauds wind back tool for 9.99 pushes as it winds...

Used one for years before having to buy one with multiple attachments for RS4 rears etc etc

I'm definatly going to invest in a wind back tool, but just confused at to why it wouldnt wind back, sometimes i was using pressure, myabe not enough as it was quite akward with the long nose pliers!
