Title: fitting a genuine RS4 or TTS steering wheel
Post by: Ottis on January 11, 2011, 12:25:48 pm
I need some help, i am thinking of fitting a genuine RS4 or TTS steering wheel since I got my Golf MK5 GTI ED30 and was wondering if anyone i could give me advice with info on fitting it also cheapest place to find one?

any general help would be appreciated, I want to know if it'll be a straight swap or what kind of stuff needs done if not. :notworthy: :happy2:

I've seen them on a mk5 before and believe its a straight swop..

Its a straight swap as far as fitting the wheel is concerned.

If you want the buttons to work its a little bit more involved.

In that case then can you put an r8 wheel on?  How does dsg effect it?

If you put a DSG R8 wheel on a manual Golf it wouldnt matter at all. The paddles just do nothing.

I think this might get added to my long list of wanted mods. It's the closest I'm going to get to an r8 anyway!  :signLOL:

How about a mk6/Rocco MFSW like mine, IMO just gives the interior a lift  :happy2: (and the buttons work)

That is nice. Prob cheaper than an r8 wheel too! Is that the wheel that goes in the golf r aswell?

Same wheel just the R wheel has piano black (gloss) inserts instead of the silver/ali look  :happy2:

I paid about £200 with the airbag, was a while ago now though.

Do like that wheel, cheaper then a MK5 sometimes on the bay too yet it's newer haha!

Might have to get one if it's simple plug and play and MFSW controls work? But guessing it will need vag com? I have it and the cable just don't know how to use it haha!

No its not plug and play it needs to be coded.

You also need a new steering wheel controller to get the horn/buttons to function, which you'd also need if you were fitting a MK5 MFSW albeit different part numbers.

^^I much prefer it to the standard MK5 wheel, the interior is quite boring without it IMO.

Andy did you get your stereo/bluetooth sorted out??

This controller you speak of, does it not come with the wheel then? How much are they?

No it doesnt come with the wheel. You already have a steering controller in your car, but its unlikely it will suitable (def not for the MK6 wheel).

It makes the stalks/horn/cruise/buttons work depending on what you have installed, and comes in lowline, midline and highline variations.

Your looking at around £130 from the dealers but they can be had on ebay for less.

The one for the MK6 wheel is hard to get secondhand so the dealer is the best bet, although they do pop up on ebay slightly cheaper.

Right I see. Thanks for your help. So is there a part number for each one or do I just say to the dealer I need a dsg, highline, mfsw cotroller?  :driver:

For the MK6 wheel you'll need 1K0 953 549 CH

The best one for the MK5 MFSW is 1K0 953 549 BK although there are many others.

For MK5 wheel you'll need a highline module SW0101 or SW0070 so there are a few to chose from  :happy2:

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

For both wheels you'll also need a type 2 slip ring but if you have a GTI with midline or highline display you'll have that already.

the audi wheels will bolt staright on but the air bag won't connect so you will through an airbag light on the audi bags are twin detonators (or at least they have 2 plugs not 1 like the golf) I wasn't prepared to mess around with hardwirierng the bag in in case i got it wrong in the process  :rolleye: :rolleye: plus i needed the extra cables for other things  :signLOL: :signLOL:
