Hey peeps, I've had the Mk5 GTI for over a week now and
loving every aspect of it, other than a slight niggle:
when starting up from cold the coolant warning light
will come on saying check coolant.
I've checked the coolant and levels are above min and no
signs of leaks.
If I turn the engine off and restart the car the warning light
dissapears :scared: is this a dodgy sensor ya reckon?
Cheers,
Damo

How cold has it been where you are?
A few of us had the issue with check coolant coming on when its been frosty / icy cold outside and as you say, checking things seem to be fine. Its likely the sensor but only seems to occur when cold

Yeah been below 4•C, so this is common on cold start especially
If cold outside?
Will see what happens when it warms up a bit

100% guarantee if the level's OK, it will be the sensor in the expansion tank. They corrode over tim and give dodgy readings. Mine was changed just before Christmas for the princely sum of £14.61. Took about 30 minutes to fit. Only ever seemed to fault when the temperature was really cold (never when it was warm).
3 months on, and having driven through December temperatures of -17°C, it's not come back on once. I also know 2 other GTI owners have exactly the same problem, also cured with a new expansion tank.

Sweet, thanks for that matey :happy2:

Below 4 degrees isnt that cold... i'm talking well in to minus figures, if the cold is affecting it at those warmer temps then i'd def consider changing the sensor if you can clearly see all is well with the coolant level

With regards to the 6 disc cd changer.... Do u have an ipod cable as this replaces the connection used for the 6 disc cd changer.
If u do then u will either have to pick one or buy another type :signLOL:
Hope this helps any.....

Hey matey, I spoke to VW Gilders in Sheffield the other day
asking for a sensor in the expansion tank and was told nothing
listed on the system :scared: and that a new expansion tank
had no sensors that came with it :scared:
Where did you get yours from and what is the part number please
matey, the warning light and check coolant message comes
on all the time now and is doing my head in
any help would be appreciated,
Cheers,
Damo

I think what you need is a new expansion tank
1K0 121 407 A
as all i can see from the etka system is a plug connector to go into the expansion tank..
I am guessing though and am not 100% sure. £9.10 plus vat but prices will have changed so probable around the £15 mark inc vat
Hope this helps :happy2:

Did you get it sorted Damo ?

Did you get it sorted Damo ?
Not yet, been to and spoke to 4 different VW garages
and know one can shed any light on it or doesn't know lol
think I need the connector off the loom that plugs into
the coolant bottle, I asked if I needed the wires but again
the staff are not very helpfull :surprised:

Damo,
Really can't understand what the problem is they are having ?
Here's the bottle with the connector shown

and finally, the "sensor" inside the bottle (the 2 prongs) which comes compelte with the bottle on the part number I gave you
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F8189%2Fimg0288jt.jpg&hash=48637f13f637c56084cec302a24ba0d888668ad1)

thread resurrection !!
My mk5 GTI is behaving just like this, anyone know if the coolant level sensor is a quick change and if so where to find the part number so I can order one. (and where to people find part numbers)
Finally its not clear if the whole coolant expansion bottle needs to be replaced, if so I might just wait for the next service at my indie !.
Thanks in advance.

You need to replace the whole expansion bottle. From memory it was around £19 from TPS and not much more from the dealers.
Not got the part number to hand though. I also bought a bottle of the VW antifreeze as well.
A mate helped change mine, fiddly to do the hose clips, used a cheap turkey baster to get the mix out of the bottle before taking it out.
