Title: Torque (Android App)
Post by: marka87uk on February 06, 2011, 07:37:14 pm
Hey,

Just wondered if any of you use the Torque app for Android?

I have it with a cheap eBay adapter and managed to try it out some more today - I'm impressed by the results!

Previously I seemed to have a data rate problem but I've since changed the settings to log at 0.5s intervals and enabled faster logging to improve it. I think the data rate could be better if I had a more expensive adapter and better phone hardware, but it'll suffice for now!

Today I logged the RPM and MAF reading and did a 3rd gear run. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the point where it would change up because I ran out of road!  :ashamed:

I downloaded the log anyway and calculated the horsepower by the MAF reading /0.8, smoothed the HP reading by taking an average of the values below and above, and then calculated the torque by (HP/5252)*RPM.

Here are the results:

The book figures for the car are 221 lb/ft and 227 bhp!

I know the MAF calculation isn't entirely accurate, but the fact I achieved the expected HP shows that it should be a very accurate way of measuring any changes in performance!

I'd be interested to learn more about the app and what you use it for!  :happy2:

Nice one  :happy2:

I'd seen it reviewed here:-

http://torque-bhp.com/

Only thing is that it doesn't seem to log the boost on VAG engines. Have you found that yourself?

Thought about having a play with it myself.

I haven't tried logging boost as I also heard that was a problem with VAG engines but I'll see if it can!

I tried logging horsepower calculated from within the app but it came up with no data - I'm guessing I haven't entered all of the settings correctly. I'd like to try to get that working to see how it differs from the MAF/0.8 calculation and also do a full log to peak RPM (I need to find a long road!).

More testing this week I think! :happy2:

By the way, the adapter I have is the one pictured in the review you posted. I won it for the grand sum of £11 so it's definitely a very cheap method of diagnostics and OBD logging!

This seems amazing value.  Looking forward to hearing about the boost logging  :popcornsoda:

I did some more logging today up to the point where the DSG changes up. The results are actually quite consistent!

I firstly did a 3rd gear run which showed a peak of 233bhp and 237lb/ft. I then did a 2nd gear run which showed a peak of 231bhp and 229lb/ft. :happy2:

I've also since realised that to show the x-axis on the graph as a value instead of category (so that the RPM values are an equal distance apart) I needed to select an X-Y Scatter Chart in Excel, so here's the updated one:

I forgot about trying to log boost so I'll give that a go tomorrow!

I can confirm boost is not logged on my 2.0TFSI and it seems that's the case with most VAG engines!

Oh well, still enjoying messing about with it! :pomppomp:

Not as far as I know. Seems to clear faults ok and the bhp calculator worked mine out at about 280bhp so reasonably accurate.
