Title: Westons' GTI - returning to standard
Post by: Weston on February 15, 2011, 05:11:45 pm
Right well I've been on here a while now and so it's about time I started one of these. Bought the car in April last year with leather, sat nav, highline, cruise control, dsg, mfsw, 18" RS4 reps etc. Since owning the car I've added Eibach springs, Valeo LED rear lights, Ultra headlights with angel eyes and drl's, open fog vents, a Forge Twintake, LED number plate lights and LEDs for all the internal lights. Here's a few photo's:

.......yeah,had it on my last GTI. Looked great when it was covered in rain or condensation. As in my last post wish VW had left it in the GTI's,my ED 30 has the rear factory privacy glass which i like just wish the front had the ''cool blue''.

I took my blue glass a step further by adding a graded blue sun strip:

Steel Grey was my second choice when I bought my GTI. Your Valeo's look totally OEM on your grey car. Beware the slippery slope though!

I'm well aware of the slippery slope  I said from the start I'd leave it totally standard. Oh well, it's becoming how I want it to be. That blue strip looks good ^^^

....That blue strip looks even better from inside the car. Very natural and brightens up an English grey day and makes a blue sky even deeper blue.  :happy2:

Same colour as R32 and were originally meant for the Golf but weren't used in the end

Got some changes on the way in the form of the following:-

Colour coding
R32 rear end (SteveP) with OSIR exhaust trim (Rich)
Milltek quad exhaust (no golf clubs at all)
Carbon fibre mirror housings (danishmkvgti recommendation)
Carbon fibre fog surrounds (matsu)
OSIR paddles (vRS Carl)

Will update with pics when complete, just awaiting a few things to arrive and trying to arrange how / when I can give up the car for the work to be done.

Just like to say a big thank you to all the people in brackets for the parts  :happy2:

When I bought the car I definitely said I'd leave it standard... whoops

I wish I could find out where I could get even One of these....

I thought so as well. A similar recaro model is under $3000 usd, But not near as sweet looking.

They're plug and play but you need to swap the fog light lens & reverse light lens. I'll get a link but the site is called kunzmann I think

Got a couple of updates on the way. I've bought a full set of R32 brakes from this sorry looking car

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fad283%2Fchrisyweston88%2Fc15c05c5.jpg&hash=87d9d1a8d945994e4f8728185119c2568783508b)

And I'm picking up these 1000 mile old wheels & tyres from this awesome looking car on Friday

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fad283%2Fchrisyweston88%2Fee032589.jpg&hash=c04f96f1da3a9c489c5576c654c2820a0e852d20)

I need new tyres & brake discs & pads anyway. Cost-wise this won't be that much more. At least that's what I'm telling my girlfriend otherwise I'll be a dead man  :signLOL:

I considered getting those brakes off the burntout R32, shame to see it in such a state,
Though would need to have them all repainted red I think.

Car looks great, some good mods being added.

Looks great :jumpmove: much better than the Rs4's IMHO.

I'm sure you've read it dozens of times on various threads, but make sure you get a map on before considering taking the break.

Different motor :driver:

Brakes should arrive Tuesday so possibly next weekend. The other wheels look rubbish in comparison  :signLOL: A remap will definitely be done one day, it's too much on the insurance for now though  :driver:

Thanks for the comments guys  :happy2: You're right Dom it does look better in the flesh. Next plans are to fit the R32 brakes. Also toying with the idea of painting the calipers a different colour & possibly matching the red strip on the front. Also need to sort out the bits the wheels bolt into as they're rusty looking (hubs?). Eventually I'll get it remapped to  :driver:

I've only heard good things. Looking at the dyno curves it might not give the biggest willy-waving figures but the overall increase across the range is what I'm after.

Was thinking about a decat myself (to go with my ITG) and then go stage 2, but have read various posts about limp mode and lots of lights on dash, which has put my off a little...

Would R-tech offer a stage 2 map that would resolve the probs???

And here's my new brakes. Really pleased with them. Had the remap for 2 weeks & the brakes for 1 week

Also added a DSG badge to the rear, not sure why but I like it.

Tiny? :-(
Huge Bosch LPS097 eddy current dyno with 12" rollers.. Try find a set bigger. It a setup Which Cosworth northampton used to use in the 90s.

Wish it was tiny as I could do mobile remaps and tow the dyno along lol. :-)

Hello,

How are tricks?

I am working on a develoment DSG map with another tuner, we have had some really good results over the last 2 weeks.  Custom launch settings, shift speeds changed up and down, raise torque setting and shift limter to match engine limiters.  I am looking for customer with my stage 1 / 2 maps to have the code loaded for free as part of my testing and to gain feedback on the software and where we could improve.   Would you like to be my 4th victim??  lol  it can be fully custom set in house to how you want it and tested on the dyno.

Massive thanks to Nick & the R-Tech Team. I'll do a proper write up once I know what I'm going to say. I'll post the dyno graphs as well once I've got them. Engine now freely revs to 7000rpm & the changes are faster & smoother.

So far I'm very pleased, there was even an increase in torque  :driver:

Thankfully they also removed my Forge Spacer  :notworthy: which would've been causing a 20bhp loss in power.
Title: Re: Westons' GTI - DSG remap done!
Post by: Weston on March 08, 2012, 11:06:36 pm
You said the spacer would have caused 20bhp loss did they prove that with a dyno run or just told you?

That figure was from another golf, not my actual car. It was proven on the dyno though. I'll sort out a review as soon as I've had a proper go with it & worked out the pros & cons  :happy2:

.
If we are talking about the Forge Spacer on the turbo line it never made sense. It's just a noise maker and if it actually dumps air instead of recirculating it as the 2.0T FSI is designed to do, then it's counter productive.

In this case, I think that Forge are guilty of bringing something to market which is merely pandering to the boy-racers by providing a sound at the expense of performance. I'm not anti-Forge btw - I run a Forge Twintake and am very happy with it indeed.

+1

"Sir do you want performance and power or phisssshhhh every time you change gear and sound like a chav"

Same with the 1.8T Forge split-R I refuse to sell then and wont tune cars with them on.

DSG remap review:

Not gonna bother waffling on for ages so here are the main points from the last few weeks:

Positive
Smooth, faster changes
Increase in torque
S won't upshift on its own
Louder & more frequent DSG "farts"
Manual mode won't upshift or downshift if you floor the accelerator.

Negative
S is very very eager to drop down
D holds 1st a bit too long at low speeds in traffic
D won't change to 6th till about 50mph or 5th till about 40mph

Car is now running 248bhp & 400Nm of torque iirc (awaiting graphs from dyno...come on Nick!)

Yep, I've given up caring whether people think I'm bad at parking because it takes longer - I kerbed a wheel within first few weeks of ownership nearly 7 years ago and never since! I wince at how I see some people abusing their wheels (and tyres) on kerbs etc even when they're not good alloys.

Cheers guys, didn't really expect anyone to be bothered  :signLOL:

I don't want to get rid of it but my saving potential is seriously reduced by running it. If anybody wants to buy it as it is that could be an option. Otherwise there'll be a long list of parts if I sell. The garages offer is the same whether standard or modified
Title: Re: Westons' GTI - possibly selling up
Post by: Nodz on April 24, 2012, 06:14:30 pm
Well IMO it's one of the nicest modded cars on here. Still looks OEM and not been done to ott. The wheels and zorst are the best parts.

I know what you mean about eating away at your saving potential. I'm in the same boat myself but luckily I have a company van and SWMBO has a little corsa so my car only comes out at weekends or long journeys so runnin costs don't become an issue. If I didn't have the van I might be in the same scenario.

As you say definately worth putting back to standard if theres no price difference as you would get a nice bit of money for the house fund with your mods. But hopefully you can find a way to keep her

If I did not like having a quick car (which I do) or travelled more miles (I do only about 3-4k PA) then I would probably have a Bluemotion, had a courtesy car today and averaged 65.3mpg on my 38 mile round trip  :happy2:

That's the plan. I reckon there's a good £2.5-3k in parts if I'm lucky followed by lower insurance, tax & general running costs.

I've been toying with a few ideas etc but whichever way I look at it my car is costing a lot to run & has a lot in it value-wise.  I'm going away in a couple of weeks, while I'm gone the car will be returned to standard. I'll probably list all the parts that are up for sale before I go so they have a chance to sell. For anyone interested this is what is likely to be available. Please note this is not a for sale thread.

19" VMR V710 reps, Forge Twintake, Black VW Grille Badge, Carbon Fibre Fog Grilles, GTI Footrest, GTI Seat Inlays, R32 Rear Bumper, Milltek Non Res Quad, decat DP, Carbon Fibre Mirrors, OSIR Carbon Fibre Rear Valance, OSIR DSG Paddles,
OSIR Instrument Surround, R32 Brakes front & rear, Newsouth  Boost Gauge & vent pod,
Aluminium Climatronic Rings, WALK, VF Engineering Engine Mounts, GTI Stitched Mats, DSG Badge, Chopped Engine Cover, Hella DRL's, Eibach Pro Kit.

Now I just need to find all the original bits!
