Hi
the front fag lighter socket (needed urgently for satnav) in my 04 golf se tdi (1.9) doesn't work. (sorry, know it's not a GTi but wondered if you chaps could help!)
The rear one does and I've checked and replaced fuses 24 & 26 (in the dash/drivers fuse box) as indicated in the fuse plan.
The front socket still isn't working - anyone have any ideas?
Thanks a lot
:drinking:

You are testing with the ignition on i presume?
Check fuse 28 (20A) as this is the pre 05 12v socket fuse :happy2:
-
by ignition on do you mean engine actually turned on or key just turned (So lights and radio etc. come on).
there's a 25amp fuse in 28 and it tested okay (the leaflet in the fusebox lid has this slot as a blank)
-
Just key on mate
Interesting...id try a fresh fuse just in case. Fuses can be funny things sometimes
-
check the hand book to find out exactly which fuse it is.
if its fine then lift the centre out and check the cable as some people have been known to wire hands free kits to it
-
I don't have a handbook unfortunately as I've just bought the car and they serviced it when I bought it so they're stamping it up and sending it on with receipts for the cambelt kit and waterpump change they've said they've done.
All I have is the little leaflet in the lid of the fuse box which indicated number 24 as the cig lighter and 26 as the charger socket.
I've tested (they were okay) and replaced both those fuses. But a 25a in each IIRC
How do you remove the centre?
-
The gear stick gator pops up and there are 4 t20 torque screws under there.
the cigarette tray should just pop out.
Check underneath and if the wires are disconnected the chances are they
may have been used for something else

Will go do that now - cheers mate

there are some pics on how to remove it there

top man, got it off and on the underside of the socket there's a 3pin plug connected to it (and a little green thing clipped to the side) does this sound normal?
-
looks identical to this (but it's connected and the black thing piggybacking off the bottom of the socket, is green on mine...doubt it makes any odds.)

Also, is my "ABS/ESP" Fuse supposed to be empty??
-
no
when you hold the ESP button down does it show on the dash in yellow as off ?
sounds like you may have a few issues with it mate, if you bought from a dealer
i would make them fix it under the warranty

The dealers a good 30 miles away and I use the car 6 days s week for work so trying to avoid that Tbh
The esp button goes amber when pressed - i'll check to see whether the dash does too
Cheers

Thats the older ESP system where the button illuminates instead of the dash

Fuse diagram for the MK5 on this link might help you out. have you tried something else other than your sat nav charger in the slot to check its the slot and not the charger gone funny? could also be worthwhile cleaning the contacts make sure they arent dirty or cover over by a stray piece of paper etc?

Visually inspected the socket (inside and out) and it looksclean enough but I'll give it a wipe just incase. I've tried the cigarette lighter push button thing aswell as my satnav charger (which works in the back cig lighter socket).
Cheers for the link , but I have a copy of that and it doesn't seem to be for my car; that pdf identifies fuse slot 42 as the fag lighter one but 42 is empty in my fusebox (and there are no terminals to fit a fuse). What with the ESP seeming to work despite the marked fuse missing I'm starting to wonder if the fuse map in the fuse box lid is wrong too.
-
They did change the fusebox layout in Oct 05 - seeings as yours is an 04, it might be affected by this.
-
Can't find an 04 diagram on the net either :(

Thats the older ESP system where the button illuminates instead of the dash
The button and the dash illuminate on older models. I had the same issue OP, I swapped the fuse with once but it didn't work but the second time it miraculously started working again. Btw I hope your looking on the drivers side fusebox.
-
looking at the fuse diagram that you say isn't correct it puts both front and rear lighter sockets on the same fuse, would suggest that even if the points had changed that the rear shouldnt be working either.
Looking at the diagram below that black cylindrical object on the side of the metal casing looks a lot like a fuse holder, worth a look?

Just checked, both the dash and button lights come on when I press the ESP button.....but the fuse marked "ABS/ESP" is missing.
And yeah it is the fuse box on the side of the dash, concealed by the drivers door.

According to the diagram in the fuse box lid : #24 is the cigarette lighter (picture of a cig on it) and #26 is the boot charger (pic of a 12v outlet). I've changed and triple tested these and they're fine.
Is the rear outlet the same wiring and design? Could I just pop it out and pop it in the front and see if it works?
The other thing I've thought is, this is an ex company car (thrashed I'd guess) if it's not broke is it possible they'd have disabled it to discourage employees smoking in there?
-
When you open up the fusebox on the drivers side, there will be a card attached to it. This shows the fuse layout. IIRC the cig lighter is linked to an icon with ventilating signs on it. I wouldn't worry about the ABS/ESP fuse missing, I'm pretty sure mine was also. The ABS/ESP definitely work so I think that fuse is elsewhere.
-
Sorted.
I am a f*cking moron. :chicken:
Thanks everyone, real help!
-
You can't leave it like that! Spill

Despite testing every fuse (one must have got through the net) ...it was a fuse...
And the worst of it was it was exactly where it should have been just the tit holding the fuse layout card was reading it the wrong way round :ashamed:
The fuses marked at the left of the card....are not on the left of the fuse box (as you look at it from the outside). sigh
much appreciate your input though guys!

Glad its sorted :happy2:

I think the card is printed for LHD cars ... I couldn't make head nor tail of the guide for my wife's polo as nothing seemed to mach up!

Ha ha, It almost always more simple than you think! Glad its all working now though and luckily before you ripped it all to pieces again :drinking:
