Title: Weirdest Connections I've EVER seen....HELP
Post by: johnhol78 on March 25, 2011, 05:46:48 pm
Right, got my car back from the bodyshop  :happy2:

Set about stopping the rattle in the top vent which I'll test tomorrow though while it was all out I removed the headunit to try and connect an MDI cable and swap pins 2 and 3 as someone suggested this will stop the buzzing I get as I accelerate.

Was present with this mess  :surprised:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi46.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff150%2Fjohnhol%2F53d1385e.jpg&hash=b79887c93f8ad01267e6f76f4f802ee851fe4d1b)

Now from I can tell... the proper connector is not being used and it's been bypassed....

Anyone shed any light or tell me if the soundpack is actually being bypassed  :surprised:

Wanted to sort this tomorrow so any help would be much appreciated.

Also anyone know what this is and if it's a reason for the special setup???

There will be another quadlock connector further back under the dash.

That looks to me to be a parrot installation cable.

Edit - The OEM Quadlock is connected to the radio, the second one with the 2 blue strips is aftermarket and I think would be the Parrot setup.

I can't make it out but it looks like there is another retrofit cable in there - is MDI already fitted?

Also the two blocks aren't connected just the other one......

Need someone to come and investigate for me.  :drinking:

Looks relatively easy you just need to take note of the pins on the Parrot lead and make sure they pass through to the radio.

I'm sure you'll be fine.

Just that confused me  :ashamed:

There are two blocks not connected......then the retrofit? one connected to HU.\

Should I connect the other block to the HU and discard the current one?

You need to ascertain what you want to get working.  If you don't want what I'm assuming is the Parrot then take it all out it will make things much easier for you.

Right so i assume the connector being used at the moment is wired to use the phone kit, the other one not connected will be the original one which should connect the speakers and soundpack up......??

How does the MDI cable usually connect to the headunit?
Title: Re: Weirdest Connections I've EVER seen....HELP
Post by: vRStu on March 25, 2011, 08:18:52 pm
Yes the one with the Blue and Sand coloured plugs is the original.

MDI connection depends on what kit you bought but generally power, CAN and sound.

That's alot missing

Can I just have the ipod in the glovebox rather than armrest?
Title: Re: Weirdest Connections I've EVER seen....HELP
Post by: vRStu on March 25, 2011, 08:42:29 pm
MDI should work with your RCD according to this - http://www.my-gti.com/688

But you only have a very small part of it.

Yes, just needs a slightly different part number.

So the original is connected in the picture and the loose one is the parrot one?

Sorry just re read and saw that the one connected to the radio in the pic is the original OEM one.

just need to remove the other one?

Post by: vRStu on March 25, 2011, 08:47:06 pm
Yes that's what it looks like from your pictures.

However there is another retrofit which may well be an MDI.  I sort of recognise the adaptor.  The wiring loom that has the brown cable on it, trace that back and see if there is an interface on the end of it.

Looking at the pictures I am starting to think there is an MDI already in there.  Did the previous owner give you the small iPod lead?
Title: Re: Weirdest Connections I've EVER seen....HELP
Post by: johnhol78 on March 25, 2011, 08:49:53 pm
Brown one seems to just loop back on itself.....will strip the lot out tomorrow and have a second butchers.....

Would removing the glovebox make it easier to remove the retrofit one.....did on my BMW.

Nope just a connection in the glovebox for an iPod.....this feeds into a connector block called an iPod Connector...

The situation with the brown wire is, the original brown has been removed from the large (quadlock) connector and the smaller single connector fitted.  The brown from the retrofit wiring loom is spliced inside the loom to link the flying lead and another which the goes into the quadlock plug in place of the brown that was removed.  That I believe will be connected to the media device.

That's an old school iPod adaptor the same as this one on my website -

http://octavia-vrs.com/cms/content/ipod-adapter

and explains the brown wire that I was trying to explain above.

Going to have to look tomorrow......but the iPod connector one side goes to my iPod and the other connects into the back of the stereo.........

Will have a root around and see if the MDI is there...

Wish I never started now.....or was given this cable...thought it would a case of plug in and boom........serves me right for thinking it would be simple...

Thanks for the help Stu....will post more pics etc tomorrow if you're about....

Think I owe you a beer...

If you could that would be great.....do I need to buy anything else for this to work or would the cable I got (same as eBay) work with existing setup?
Title: Re: Weirdest Connections I've EVER seen....HELP

The cable you have like this one -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-SEAT-SKODA-MEDIA-MP3-USB-LEAD-ADAPTER-GENUINE-MDI-/250780556664?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a63af9d78#ht_1718wt_907

will require an MDI to be fitted.

You'll need the rest of the MDI kit as the lead you have just connects the iPod to the flying lead of the control box.

I've still got your number so will be in touch tomorrow

How much is the extra part? Do you know the part number or where I can get one....if it's expensive then I'll have to make do with the current setup...wifes car cost me £600 yesterday  :surprised:

It's often a problem with units bought from eBay etc which are sold as plug and play 'no coding required'.

Think it sounds better when the engines not running though.....almost louder and with more bass.\

Could the fact the wrong CAN gateways installed cause an issue when the engines running?
