Howdo all
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, happens near enough everytime as title says 30s after start up, stay on for about 2-3 mins then go off.
did check for fault codes a while back before i got rid of my vagcom lead, was doing it then, maybe not as much.
Any ideas?? thanks

Is it not your Aircon pump starting up?

I get this too, just gave up trying to find a solution. Local VW dealer said it was due to the smaller fan not working properly so I had to replace the both to get to the bottom of it. Then the odd stuff happens, when the car is flashed at the dealer it goes away and I do not get any probs for months - then it comes back. Checked both fans and they both work but still get the fan coming on after startup. Not Air-Con as it's the main Big bugger that starts up.
Is it to do with re-maps - sounds odd but can't put my finger on this one either. Gave up till I saw you mentioned it as apart from being annoying they go off after you get on the run.

Ours is the same. :scared:

If you have the aircon turned on this is a common failure of the speed resistor in the fan as it cant run a low speed, then the condenser rad heats up so hot the fan comes on full blast.

Whats the remedy?

New fan :signLOL:

Thanks for the answer Alex, so does anyone have a part number for the fan frame and price??
Thanks

I'll get one tomorrow for you :) what year is yours?

2005, one of the old girls
Thanks

Mine does this in the warmer weather with air con on, couldn't justify the £400+ I was quoted to fix it seeing as everything still works anyway

New fan :signLOL:
Donut :signLOL: I could have guessed that bit but was hoping it would be a small (cheap) fix. Ours is a 2005 and would also be interested like Sie.
Ours does with A/C on or off. Makes no difference.
Thanks :happy2:

On the polos, it was possible in some cases to repair the blown solder joint, but you have to use silver solder due to the amount of heat generated - normal solder just melts again!
Let me find the part number for you...
You should have two fans...therefore can you tell me which one is spinning lol!

When looking from the front of the car, the rh one still works and spins, Lh (drivers Side) doesnt.
Thanks

Hi Alex, any joy?

Update coming soon!

The part number depends on the make of fan currently fitted, you can't mix and match. Siemens and Temic are the two makes given in the parts cat.
Fan on AXX engine
1K0 959 455 ET -Siemens (200W/295mm Right).
1K0 959 455 CR -Temic.
1K0 959 455 Dt is 300W/360mm left Siemens
1K0 959 455 CQ is 300W/360mm left Temic
1K0 121 207 BB 9B9 is the actual Cowl.
All the above is not cheap, comes to around £360, 60 for the shroud and 160/140 for the fans.

Cheers QD I was just about to post a very similar one!

Hi all
First post but i have been a lurker for a long while
Thought i would share something from my SEAT days
On my LCR, i had exactly the same issue with the fan resistors burned and the fan running flat out
I used this mod to fix the issue without having to replace the fans
I know its a bit of a fiddle and involves some mechanical know how and cutting of wires but its a cheap fix
Not sure if it's applicable on a MK5 but any info is a help

Well I finally got round to sending the car to my Indy. After diagnostics showed a faulty temp sender, new one was ordered. The odl one was reading randomly and causing the fan to come as a precaution.
£130 (all in) later and so far so good. :happy2:
