Hi Guys,
I've discovered a problem on my GTi DSG - when it's been on a good high-speed run and the fluid is obviously up to a decent temperature, the car lurches from the line and is very jerky in the lower gears at low speed. Also when coasting to a stop, there is a pronounced clunk and lurch forward as the car engages 1st gear. The car does not do this when cold or up to temperature on town-driving etc, only when it's been on motorways.
I've read other posts and think that a DSG reset when the fluid is up to temp would be worth doing, but I would like to know if any other owners have had the same problem. The car had the fluid and filter change last september by the way - and has been done twice to date.
Cheers,
Kenny

Mine has a slight clunk when going into 1st sometimes, but im assured its nothing to worry about and merely due to it being a high torque gear
Its not jerky at all though, so that may suggest a deeper problem
Id try a dsg reset. If it doesnt clear, it may be a mechatronics issue but hopefully not!
-
As I've just got the car, I have the opportunity to take out warranty (I sourced the car trade, so got it cheap!) - just in case the Mechatronics is shot!
Am I wrong, but would there be a problem at all temperatures if the mech unit was knackered?
-
Not necessarily. It can be a variety of things that cause issues
When was the oil and filter last changed?
Take the warranty!
-
Oil & Filter changed last september.
Is the best warranty through Warranty Direct ?? ... that covers the mech unit etc. What sort of cost is it?
-
I think so, and yes i think it does.
Cost...im not sure. Im over 60k so it was more limited when I looked at a warranty
-
Mine is over 60k too ...
...I will have a look on the 'net and get it priced up.
-
let me know what it is :happy2:
-
Your looking at £950+vat and labour, around £1800-depending on your dealers labour rate
Average for a mech unit
-
took mine into VW on Thursday last week as it did the same 'lurch't etc. It had always done this, I bought it 2nd hand from VW 2 yrs ago and they never told me this was an issue! Turns out that the mechatronics need replacing. Good news that I am selling the car so I can advertiese a brand new DSG mechatronics box,bad news is this part is on backorder with VW ~ 14 days which would suggest that they might be replacing the odd one or two!!
-
I had the same issue on my old GTTDI DSG and it was the Mechatronics unit :happy2:
-
I have now purchased the Warranty Direct warranty and also paid extra to cover dealer labour rates. - just need to get it looked at now and hopefully it'll need a new Mech unit!
-
What was the cost buddy? Quite interested to take one on mine.
-
Not sure if people are aware but its under £300 for warranty from vw and that's everything included even full roadside recovery so would possibly work out cheaper than an aftermarket one.
-
VW warranty has to under 60K at the time of taking though doesnt it?
-
Not sure about that but mine had 57k at the time of taking it out but I imagine they would have changed it by now to compete because most warranties are up to 100k.

Im to assume yours came direct from a VW dealership though?

I've had my GTi for about four weeks. After a high speed run on some back roads for about 45 mins, I experienced exactly the same problem. Pulling away in 1st was clunky, jerky and somewhat embarrasing :ashamed:
It only lasted for about 1/2 hr after my hard drive. When I pulled into a teso car park and stuck it in reverse, everything seemed fine. To date this has been the only time this happened.
Let us know how ya get on.. ?!
-
Warranty cost is about £30 a month ... until you want to cancel it!
-
Interesting. I would say PM me some more details on the specific plan, but youll need 10 posts first!
-
Will keep posting!
It is cheaper if you want a network garage to do the work, but I opted for a dealer repairs as it's full dealer history - and I will keep servicing up with the dealer.
-
I have the jerky problem but in a Leon FR DSG, I think its the mech box but as my car is modified heavily (performance wise) my guess is even a warranty direct warranty wouldnt cover me?

No bought my car from an independent garage.
If you just type in Google vw used warranty it comes up I think the address is something like
Volkswagenwarranty not sure.

Flashing gear selector on MFD happend to me over the weekend...restarted car. Seems ok for the time being. Should I be worried?
-
Yes....Thats a sure sign of Mechatronics failure
-
What sort of errors do I need to look out for in a VAGCOM check?
Also, how long will the error be retained before its cleared?
Not the sort if thing I really wanted to be dealing with a week before going abroad.

Update for anyone interested... VW have agreed to replace the mechatronic unit after me going on about it being a common issue. I have been told they take around 10 days to arrive - supplied to order and chassis no.
Does anyone know what changes were made to the later mechatronic units, and is it a relatively straight forward remove/fit job as I don't have that much confidence in the VW technicians?

....I think it would be wise to let the VW techies install it - They can't be that bad! You really can't expect VW to take any responsibility for any future issues with it if you don't. The new mechatronics will have its own warranty starting from when they install and test it.
What if what they supply isn't perfect and you are the one who has fitted it? - You have very little recourse.

VW should be ok, won't be the first time they have fitted one.......................

Quite - I think they are quite well versed with it all by now

Some very valid points guys... how long does the warranty last, and idea on the latest revision number for the mechatronic unit?
-
If the car is within the standard VW warranty period (3 yr/60k) parts will only be warrantied until the expiration of the warranty period, which in my mind is a joke - VW MK and good use of the goodwill tariff can help mind. If it is paid for then all genuine VW parts, fitted by dealers are covered for 2 years from date of install.
-
Thanks, :happy2:
-
Any update on which warranty you opted to take, as im looking into this pending purchasing a Ed30 DSG, dont fancy the mechtronics unit costs if it £1k +.. :happy2:
-
Sorry buddy, mine was done under VW warranty.
-
Hi guys, see my update on my Mechatronics Unit posted today under 'Suspect something wrong with my DSG'...
-
Car has gone into the dealers now .... got it nice and warm so that it would fault when they tried it ..... fingers crossed!!
-
Had my car in at the dealers - diagnosed as the Mechatronic unit .... as expected.
To cut a long story short - put the claim through to Warranty Direct who have declined it, due to the unit not failing completely! There is no fault code shown for this fault, but they have have been sent a Technical Bulletin from VW that details it - and the symptoms.
I'm not happy at all ... and am really going to go to town on the Warranty Direct company - I've technically been mis-sold a Warranty!
Have any of you guys experienced the same problem with Warranty Direct? ...
-
Hi bigkenny1781, sounds like the mechatronic unit buddy. I would take it to the dealership straight away if its still under warranty.

Im 99.9% certain that Britishlion got his Mechatronic unit replaced and covered by Warranty Direct.
Which level of warranty did you ask for as they do various levels of cover iirc and you need the top level i think for this to be covered.
-
I got the best cover that they did - but the problem is that it doesn't show a fault on the diagnostic report and without this they are not willing to cover it! ... even though I had documentation from Volkswagen about the fault.
-
Update on the old 'mech unit.
Booked in next monday to be sorted after having to give Warranty Direct an E-Bomb!
-
Mech-unit all sorted now ..... lovely!
-
How did you get it sorted in the end.I have the same issue and Warranty direct refuse to fix if theres no fault code.
-
Same with my case .. no fault code = no problem in their eyes!
I'm not going to disclose exact details on the forum, but a concise email to the powers that be made them send an Engineer out ... who agreed that the unit was shot and relayed the information back to them.
Just stick to your guns and use factual information with them and they will be okay. I have to say that they did remain professional even though I did give some of the staff a bit of a hard time - and that's not usually how I operate.
-
when i moaned about my dsg, they said they mech unit was of a serial no. that had a known issue and they changed the unit out. this transformed the car, i was amazed at the difference. i havent checked but maybe this is listed in etka as a known problem?
-
I have now purchased the Warranty Direct warranty and also paid extra to cover dealer labour rates. - just need to get it looked at now and hopefully it'll need a new Mech unit!
Just be careful with WD they will try absolutely anything to wriggle out of paying up!!
-
I have received my cheque now from Warranty Direct for the Mechatronic unit ... many thanks!!
