Has title says, Just got my Cannondale Super V back on the road so doing little things to get it fully spec'ed, lets see what you have and what you've done to them,
Darren
PS will post pics of mine once I get 2 minutes
-
I got a Marin mount vision pro
Fox vanilla RLC 140 front forks
Fox rp23 rear shock
Hope m4 front and rear brakes 220mm disc and 200 rear with braided lines
All the drive train is shimano xtr stuff
Cane creek headset
Real nice hollow bottom bracket but cant remember what it is! Lol
What else??
Oh got some sweet mavic rims which are really light too.
It's a nice bike but I don't get out on it enough :(
-
Got a 2010 Scott Voltage FR30, Renthal bars n stem, chain ring, Rockshox Tottems, V12's, Hope pro 2's just about to order a saint groupset and fox rc4 for the rear!
-
This is my little project at the minute, The golf seems to have ground to an halt and I'm thinking of getting rid :surprised: I'm using the bike to go to work on now...
I know I have a diesel but I'm wanting to move into a bigger house and so I've started using the bike and saving the £60-£70 in diesel I usually spend each week just to goto work.
Bike spec nothing fantastic at the minute but I'm getting there, my main things where to sort the front forks and rear shock.
RockShox Recon 100 front forks
Fox rp23 rear shock, (TFTuned) heavy duty mounts
Shimano Nexave 160mm front disc with XT rear v brakes
FSA Orbit headset
XT spd pedals
XT rear mech with LX front mech
Mavic rims which are so old its unbelievable(the disc on the front isn't even an International Standards)
New Schwalbe land cruiser tyres front and back
To come will be new wheels then a disc conversion on the back and then new brakes and groupset.
This is it when I first started on it.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss4%2Fmortygttdi%2FDSCF0548.jpg&hash=bbe35a633346b6d115ed31480b74638a32ac5960)
And this is it has it stands now.

Darren, here's my Specialized S-Works Epic. Custom build and I love it. Round Dalby there's nothing quicker

Fox 100 RLC Forks
Spesh Brain Shock
Spesh carbon bars & ends
SRAM X0 shifters & rear mech
XTR crank & rings
XTR front mech
Roval Controle wheels & tubeless Conti Mountain Kings
Hope Tech X2 brakes
Spesh Command Post
-
Very nice mate, It looks like the conti mountain king's are quite popular?
Darren
-
It's the only way to fly. I need a great all round tyre as I run tubeless. So no switching rubber to fit the conditions of the ride. Nothing else is as good, although the Panaracer Fire XC that I ran weren't bad. The contis have better wet grip by far.
-
The last pic I have of mine although it has changed a little since.
Now running;
Hope 2 hubs
Mavic 717 rims
SRAM 990 red rear cassette
KMC X9 SL gold chain
And it is now really light and very fast. Had the upgrades as a treat to myself after I cracked a couple of ribs at llandegla hitting a tree at 25 mph
It's only now I'm getting my confidence back
-
Oh I forgot. I'm running on hope 3 pro hubs. Clicky clicky!!

ive got a pitch for the rest, ive had about 6 or 7 hard core trail bikes and the cheapest one ive bought has been the best ! cant beat a pitch with a set of big foxes on it !!
-
Oh man I miss my dh rig!! I used to have some bad offs! Which hurt.
I switched to a xc bike and slowly migrated my heavy Downhill parts to lighter more appropriate parts haha
-
My worst one has been the collar bone ! fecked up the road gap at innerleithen :rolleye:
Yea DH is pretty soar Im bodyarmoured up to the max now, ive had a couple of really bad ones since but the armour has saved me !

Is that the Lapierre?(sp) I was looking at these in the latest MBR mag they do look nice,
Darren
-
I've just taken delivery of an Orange Five S with an upgrade pack including Hope H/S and hubs, carbon MonkeyLite bars, Shimano MX-30 pedals (best pedals in the world bar-none!) and an upgraded rear Fox shock. I've not even ridden it yet as I've ordered several sheets of PaintShield (3M) through work on the cheap to protect the white paint work. Need to ditch the OEM Rock Shox fork though, as Rock Shox are naff and can't with stand much abuse (I've broken 3 in the past)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Forangebikes.co.uk%2Fimages%2F2011_bikes%2F710%2FFive_S_18-001487.jpg&hash=60bd88c81758edf37c2f6893242f9425854075ed)
This is to compliment my Orange MsIsle which I built front scratch - Marzocchi Drop-Offs, D521s on Hope hubs with Tioga Factory DH 2.3s, Azonic stem, bars and seat post, Hope H/S, MRP chain device, RaceFace cranks and BB (titanium splined spindle), MX-30 pedals, Shimano XT rear mech/cassette and Hope rear disc (front brakes are for little girls)

It's the Lapierre Zesty 214, only the entry level but it was at a price I couldn't say no too.

My mate has got a Orange 5 AM 2011, nice bike for going down hills on but quite hard going up them due to the seat position. Defo get the Fox's for the front.

I find riding to work and back very stress relieving, no traffic jams etc. I do a 40 mile round commute everyday and love it. Save a fortune on fuel too!

Spec is:
xtr groupset with yumaya upgrades
juicy 7 brakes
hope pro 3 wheelset (24 spoke 3 bolt discs)
brown chris king headset
sid world cup forks

ti bolts throughout
currently running retro onza aggro skinwall tyres!
I love it
my next project is a 1950's Raleigh which I want to paint pea green and deck with chrome and a brown brooks :-)

29 inch wheels look massive
I think it will be fine with 26" wheels.
The americans have apparently got a bit of an obsession with 29ers at the moment.
I'll either build one or start speccing my hei hei up with better bits and bobs.
Might have too if my forks don't work after the second rebuild.

Here is my 2012 Superfly 100 ( I did run a separate thread on 29ers). I am really pleased with it - I haven't found a downside about it yet!! And yes the wheels do look huge, I have short legs (5'10") and it's a 17.5" frame.

Looking good Ryan :happy2:
-
Very nice bits.
I have just put some ODI Troy Lee Grips on.
I may get one of these new rear Kashima FOx Shocks.
And start adding some other lighter bits and bobs starting with the wheels.
Love it and I live in the Chilterns so at every turn there is a different trail.
Unfortunately its taking a precedent over the car at the moment!
-
Cheers guys.
That new gold coating on fox suspension does look lovely:)
I'm pretty lucky in Shropshire with routes, Wrekin is 5 mins away, Cannock chase and the long mynd are 35 mins away. East ridge is 45 mins, Llandegla an hr and then brenin, pen machno, Marin all under 2 hrs. Tried the ladyblower loop in the peaks this year, stunning route if any of you fancy masses of variation and stunning views. Hard work though at over 50km.
I know what you mean about taking focus off the car, I've not spent a lot of time on it recently, always looking for new bits to feed my new found addiction to bike modding instead

my two latest rides, sadly sold the voltage as i wanted something more all round and built up the commencal

Guys need some help here. I have around 3k to spend on a xc/dh bike but im not up to date with things these days and the new suspension tech. Used to ride trials back in the day so i know how to throw a bike around just not 100% on the xc/freeride/dh bikes.
Been looking at an Orange alpine 160, trek remedy 9 and slash 7 but i really carnt make my mind up. It has to be able to climb aswell, im almost settled on the Orange but not so sure about the weight and the "old" tech.
Is there anything better suited? or is it a case of i wont go far wrong with either?
Cheers :happy2:
-
Orange get great ratings in the magazines but in the biking community they are subject to a mass of slating so make sure you have some thick skin if you invest in one.
My mate has a five AM and while nice and tough it feels a tank and is a bit of a dog on the flats and climbs with its single pivot rear suspension. The obvious choice with the usual brands is the lapierre zesty or spicy, the trek remedy, giant reign, mojo ibis etc.
My money would be going for something German, they really are leading the way with spec, value and build quality.
I'd be looking at something like....
http://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=2567
http://www.canyon.com/_uk/mountainbikes/bike.html?b=2572
And for a bit less than £3k but still massive spec

Cheers mate :drinking:
Liking the look of the strive esx 9.0 and the Wicked 160 and you deffo get more for your monies looking at the components.
Tbh i kinda knew id get that response about the Orange, which is what was holding me back and they do look heavy.
Id say youve made my decision harder now though
-
I've got a specialized pitch comp which i got myself at christmas!
Lovely bike and will cope with anything!
It did about 300 miles last month, the golf did 50!
-

Very nice mate^^^ what did you have before??
Darren
I originally had an Orange P7, the original anniversary model from 1997 and had that for years but fell out of favour with cycling and sold it a few year back. Then bought a Boardman Pro HT on a cycle to work scheme to see if I could get back into it which I did. However it kept having issues and nearly a year of having it they have cancelled the whole scheme and refunded me the money.
Wanted one of the Treks for ages though so thought sod it. I love it.

Lovely bike Darren. That was one of the options I looked at when I bought my Trek. How do you find the beast on the climbs?

Heres a more recent photo with the SID forks and thomson stem and probably other bits ive forgotten about

Just purchased this, can't wait for it to arrive! I currently have a supreme dh v3 but don't really race anymore so wanted something a little more playful :)
-
Very tidy :happy2:

This thread has emerged from the depths!
Some lovely rides on here. I see owning a gti and being a bit OCD about mtb bling goes hand in hand...
That Commie is lovely — it'll be a lovely change from the Supreme DH (which I used to race on as well).
I used to race DH about 5/6 years ago. I came out of retirement a couple of weeks ago and raced my first gravity enduro on this Nukeproof Mega. I placed third in category so I was pretty delighted with that :)

I've got a Commencal Premier S, which i purchased through the cycle to work scheme.. really just because it was the most shiney in the shop (magpie syndrome)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ak-ash3%2F579600_189320137857746_1891480964_n.jpg&hash=1c5e74b852ae50ec0d2842ce1a6f17e2c46cff07)
I've not done anything to it.. as to be honest.. cars i can work on.. i can fix oil rigs with my eyes closed but i've not a fecking scooby about push bikes.. my knowledge extends as far as my legs push the pedals and the wheels go round..
It no longer has the "girly" attachments (as a mate put it) such as the mudguard and reflectors and stuff..
but to be fair i think i've been out on it about a dozen times.. we have a couple of the "7 stanes" locally, Mabie and Ae, and have been up mabie on it, but since i got the Mk5 i've not had the bike out (i had a mk4 tdi and the bike just got chucked in there with the back seats down) but now ive got a roof rack and cycle carrier i'm going to make a conscious effort to get out more and get my fitness up
Can anyone point me in the direction of some trick parts for the commies? plus.. how easy are they to strip down, as i quite fancy a colour change to something a bit brighter and in your face, such as the neon bike a few posts above...
Cheers
Mikey

Current bikes, custom Transition TR450, custom Transition Covert
-
I've always had a soft spot for transition for some reason - never actually ridden one though.
Coming form the the glory to the intense soccom the Head angle really makes a differance - glory plows through everything but the soccom you really need to choose your lines - trade offs though the soccom takes air and like a pro and both handle equally well ! Soccom for inners and glory for fort bill ! - fink im going to try the k9 industries head angle reducer on the soccom and see what happens !

I rode a mondraker summum for a bit last year when I was riding for a team. Much prefer the TR450 but the summum was mint at tracking the ground like. U just had to work the bike constantly to get the best out of it.
The 450 likes to plough as well but it's mint on the steep stuff, even tho the summum was slacker, I still preferred the 450 any day!!!
Inners is my fave place in the world to ride lol.
I nearly got a glory a year or 2 ago, don't like the colour schemes on the new ones :(
-
Yea the glorys a good bike I've still got the frame in the hut it's a heavy though - it's still the best I've ridden at fort bill, but it really is noticeably slower than the soccom at inners which I ride more often. I deffo crash the soccom more often !
I can remember at fort bill I had the rear end of the glory drifting at the corner with the berm just before the tree section ( berm build up with the logs and my rear end drifted right in to the log wiped out all my spokes and stood up right catapulting me in to the field and rocks ( bike stayed exactly where it was upright - still attacked to the berm !) 2 seconds later my mate hit my bike and broke his ribs ! That was my last ride on the glory - fink I had 12 runs that day my body was destroyed !!
You must be pretty good if you rode with a team ! Who was it ?
-
GT Palomar 2008 - Was bought around four years ago and is still going strong. It's been used about twenty-times since bought, haha.

I'm the same mate. Bought a Specialized Hardrock a few years ago. Changed the forks to Tora 318's, swapped a few other bits, bars, stem, seat post etc and hardly use the damn thing

Always loved gamblers. If I ever get rid of my TR450 I would be tempted, but I just love how this bike rides
BTW, don't get zee cranks. they're just SLX with different logo, the paint rubs off them SO quickly and they're not as stiff as saints. Save ya pennies up and go for saints mate.
-
P.S Wouldnt use zee shifter either, wana go for SLX cos that will only shift up once per click, whereas saint and zee can shift up multiple gears by 1 click
-
Cheers buddy will do that, it was either Zee or E thirteen but will look at the Saint
-

u want the m660 one.
The m670 has the ispec mount, so you can use the hope match makers etc
so just get the m660 mate :)
-
I'll get them ordered tomorrow, I can always sell the shifters I dont use, im a bit peed off ow though cos I just got rid of some
Not to worry, thanks for your help mate :happy2:
-
hahaha i know mate, nowt worse than buying something and then being told you've got the wrong one
don't get me wrong, you might be happy with the zee shifter, but I would hate it. thats why I always use sram :booty: :booty: lol, single click = 1 shift up, the way it should be!

Much off-road or mountains on the way?
Get a hybrid without suspension it will be a much easier ride and good for cycle paths and forest tracks when required.

Boardmans (Halfords) get a good write up but at the end of the day they are all as good as each other.
It will just come down to personal preference.

Hedge is right, you dont want a mountain bike for a commute, you want a hybrid (if its never going off road get a racer)
You go on mainland europe and you wont see people with mountain bikes anywhere but in the hills and mountains lol. It seems to just be a UK thing! They are geared far to low for commuting IMO.

Sold my bike the other day really want to try a 650b or a 29er next but just not sure what size I would prefer just trying to find something cheap ish second hand as can't really justify 2k in a bike as would get another car for that money :signLOL:

Bought myself one of these last year, never really been into mountain biking so just thought I'd buy something not to expensive and see if I got into it, which I have, absolutely love it. Living right on the edge of the lake District I'm obviously not short of places to go only thing is I think i might already be pushing the bike further than it's capable, might need a set of forks soon.

Renthal Fatbar
Renthal 36t chainring
Saint m820 brakes - 203mm saint rotors
Saint m820 rear mech
Saint pedals
Zee shifter, SLX to go on
Saint cranks to go on
Not sure to ditch the Van R rear shock and go RC4 or tune the R
Rockshox RC new charger damper to go in in July.
:) good stuff!!!
I have an RC4 and it is good cos it has high and low speed adjustments, whereas I don't think the van does??
It's mint to use if you're in between spring rates, I am in between 450 and 500lb spring so I can whack on a bit of compression and use a 450lb spring :happy2:
-
Yes the Van R is just rebound with a tuned compression for the gambler but my Large frame only came with a 350lb spring and I'm probs more 400-450lb just watching an rc4 on the bay it says offers so may be cheeky and see if he would take maybe £170? And see if I can get rid of mine for that price??
-
Finally got myself a 2013 spec camber 29er
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fd122%2Fmat138l%2F861F91BE-5268-464D-9017-A930205B9857_zpsvlxty0xy.jpg&hash=9ca1c8b8bd69aae584d0c46d3188b023fff7fb71)
Looking forward to getting out on it and it's my first 29er. Will upgrade things in time just can't wait to ride it
-
Hi, I'm looking at getting back into biking and spoilt for choice. A lot of nice bikes on here and I've done a lot of mountain biking in the past. Has anyone got or any experience with the GT Force X-Carbon Expert 27.5 2014? Or can recommend something on the same level that they find really good? I ideally want something with the ability for all pedalling uphill effort to be transferred to ground without wasting energy etc.. Any help appreciated.
-
i can not get over how fast these 29ers are uphill they fly,i know they are not as agile but for xc trails i don't think you can knock them.I was going to get a 650b bike but really glad so far with the 29er. I would try and see if someone local would let you have a ride or even try your local stores they might let you try em out first
-
650b would be my ultimate choice just cos it's the best of both extremes. I'm still not in with this big wheel 29ers I just cannot see that something with 3inch more diameter and longer spokes can be just has strong has the other 2.
Massive flex in the front and back in tight berms and techy descents cannot be much fun but I'm gonna reserve my comments cos I've not actually tried one so I might be completely wrong :happy2:
Matt do you go round the local trials at halifax? Been wanting to try some for ages but not had chance to get over, maybe you could be our guide :happy2:
My gambler has been changed to 650b for the 2015 model so I might change next year
-
only really started getting back out the last few days since picking the bike up and did Gisburn yesterday and off to Dalby this weekend have a few local woods near me have seen people heading to so will try get out on an evening and see what i can find
-
Dalby is good it's not that far from me
-
Dalby is good if your a mileage freak  I personally don't like it cos you don't get enough out of it for all the up hill sections! If it had some long descents then fair enough but I prefer llandegla, gisburn, hamsterley and cos it's local I like to practice and have a piss about at stainburn in Otley.
-
i enjoyed gisburn even did the skills park and enjoyed it and so did my 7 year old :signLOL: he did not like going up hills but loved the down hills section made me very proud of the little man
-
Good man I do like gisburn it's been well thought out. I think you'll like hamsterley as well Matt I've been a couple of times and enjoyed it, if your willing to travel Cannock chase is a really good day out and I've been told Sherwood pines is a top day as well.
-
I've been looking at maybe giving Gisburn a visit, looks good, be nice to get out of Cumbria for a change :signLOL: looks like it's worth travelling for? My parents have a place they stay near Settle so might tie it in with one of their visits.
-
100% worth a visit to gisburn was a nice mixed set up
-
Hamsterley is one of my local rides... As said it's fairly decent now and getting better with all the work going into it. Decent dh sections for people wanting fun or technical sections although not the biggest of hills. I'm off for a weekend at Cannock at the end of the month ... Any recommendations on the best rides there?
-
need to do cannock does look good thats on my to do list
-
Just picked up a new lid as i did not think my other had enough protection for my head

Is that TLDs new enduro lid Matt?
Cannock you can do the whole of follow the dog and the monkey trail in one probably take about 2 hours unless your stopping for breaks quite frequently?
There is also Stile cop at the lower cliff just over the train tracks, but best to get in car and go down to the other car park. Stile cop is more DH free ride stuff so is more of the bigger jumps drop offs and techy descents it's a good day out if your confident on your bike.

On topic here is my new addition to the garage bike rack, it's a 2012 Commencal Ramones AL1 basically an all mountain aggressive hardtail

It is mate it's a bloody comfy helmet too and very light on your head. Love the new hard tail need some black and red grips for mine I think just not 100% what I want
-
Cheers Matt, it's a fantastic bike that takes every thing you can throw at it :happy2:
Get yourself on Chain reaction cycles and have a look for some grips, but I'll warn you it's very addictive

I know mate it might get out of hand very quickly :ashamed: :signLOL:

Had a great weekend at Cannock... Wet on the Friday but Saturday was spot on! Lower cliff is a real surprise but a great little downhill... Would b better still if I knew the track
-
Was in cannock the other weekend got a bit lost :signLOL:, did the red route at dalby that proved how unfit I am :signLOL:, did sherwood pines red route last weekend and found that a very fast route plus did lee quarry Sunday morning and found that good fun if not a little short and very rocky but it was always going to be :signLOL:. I am really enjoying it and loving being out and seeing places and have met some really nice people while out

XTR group / Fox Float 32 / Superstar Pedals+Grips / Hope headset / Avid BB7 160r/208f / Mavic XM719 with Nukeproof Gen Hubs / Nobby Nic Evo Tyres
Getting back into it a little bit, but want something lighter, just tried a Santa Cruz Superlight; lovely bike, much lighter than the Orange and Full Suspension too.
Any other suggestions? Perhaps a Giant Anthem? Don't really want the expense of Carbon but Aluminum over steel I think... just XC.

wow some awesome rides there, esp. like the FatBoy - you ridden it in the snow?
I'd like a lightweight XC bike, any recommendations?, I'd like to get as close to 20lb as possible, my Orange (above) is closer to 30lb --- The Scott Scale ( @col (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10768) - is that a Scott Scale in your pic, what's the weight? How do you find it?)
The weight is not set in stone, just want it to be noticeably lighter than the Orange; Santa Cruz Superlight is noticebaly lighter too, think that was around the 24lb mark..?
-
Went BPW couple of weekends ago. first long trip for the golf - from Hertfordshire.
I have a Dartmoor hornet and a transition blindside. Both built from scratch and love both
-

No sadly never had any snow just hard frost which is typical as every year for as long as I can remeber we've had some  Fingers crossed for this winter.
That said I have made use of it in the mud and it's great, rarely loses traction and has tonnes of grip downhill too, it feels very surefooted and rolls over roots etc like they are'nt there
-
Have a medium Scott ransom 10 (Full Carbon) in as new condition if you're interested :happy2:
Cheers

Alright Scotty
Yeah, it's a Scott scale 35 carbon frame. My bike weighs 10kg, that's about 22 lbs in old money I think. I bought it in 2012 so no idea where you'd find another now, but if you can find one I'd well recommend it. Top bike ....

Dragging this from the depths :)
22lbs is super light... bought a cheap Orange Crush frame and whacked on all the bits from the P7 and converted into a slick hybrid.
With decent tyres; Magic Marys and 140mm Fox, my old Crush is 31lb LMAO!

Cheers mate, I had heard something but not seen the full release, interesting times. My mates keep telling me to swap brands and get into a Yeti or Santa Cruz, they do make some nice metal for sure.
@Newbieintown (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14652) what's the max you can put on teh S-works? Looks like you have about 120mm there. My mate has a 575 Yeti which is a really nice but has a bit of limit front end... we looked at a Yeti SB5 today £4k with £2k off list... lovely machine, but waaay out of my price range.

I only have 100mm travel so not really able to go to crazy on it, doesn't help am big boned haha. To replace mine it's insuranced for 7.2k, more than my car is worth haha. I tried out loads before buying mine some bikes just didn't feel right, just wanted off as soon as I got on them.
This year got a cheap roadie for fitness and am liking it just this weather sucks.

Not the best picture but got an Orange Alpine 160 that I built up, 160mm travel fox front and rear. SLX groupset, ice tech brakes, dropper post, tubeless tires... She's a beast!

Is that Llandegla?; came off there the other week in the snow/ice, did the Black run just fine then binned it behind the hut, hahaha.
Some mint bikes on here, love the Chameleon @white91 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13025) is that a KMC chain, colour scheme is cool. :happy2:

I hear that mate, I can't be assed with slick tyres in the winter, esp. if you use cycle paths... Dark nights, Wet leaves, dogs off leads, etc etc... Its one of the reasons I got back into mountain biking for the winter., grip :). I do love getting out on a crisp cold dry day for a blast though, nothing like the speed of a light bike with slicks after humping around a 30lb+ slack angle MTB.
We're doing Snowdon this December so I need to get on top of the cardio again, hmm. :)

Yes mate kmc goldie looking chain!
The chameleon is an amazing bit of kit, climbs well and can handle the downhill, everyone who rides it loves it! I'm more road these days tho
