Title: what is the point of a stage 2+?
Post by: Homer on April 13, 2011, 10:28:09 am
From what I have read this would only give an extra 5 hp? So is it really worth going through the extra cost and pushing the limits of the car for such a small gain? Or is there other gains to be had? Thanks

Have you compared the torque curves??

HP is pub talk, Torque is where it's at.

....Naturally anyone who has done it will say it's worth it if only to justify their own decisions. That doesn't mean that it's not worth it but modding/tuning is financially a path of diminishing returns - As you gain performance it costs more and more to achieve less and less.

What's 'best' is what suits YOU the best in what you want your car to do. For me personally there is no point in Stage2+ for my car even if I didn't have to pay for it. If I want more performance I'd be wiser to buy a new car with more performance out of the box (as standard) - RS3 for example.

Very true red Robin but from my point of view I'm baseing it on how much satisfaction I get out of Tuneing my car. To simply go buy a faster car to me that defeats the object of Tuneing! I think it has being worth it as iv done the work myself apart from the map, And had the enjoyment of working on the car and also when on a track day when I'm passing all these fancy expensive cars it gives you a pretty big grin. It's all down to how you justify spending your money.

No sure that's a great comparison Robin.. Spending say £400 on yours to go Stage 2+, compared to spending another £30-40k on a RS3, is hardly in the same ball park..  :signLOL:
A lot / or most people mod there cars to get that extra bit of performance out of their motor without having to spend £1000's on a faster car out of the box.
I agree that moddifying a car isn't the best investment financially, but if you are sensible and sniff out good deals, you can do it without losing to much money. For example, it cost me £500 (in lost money) for me to go Stage 2+ and back again, once i've sold my bits. Which for 80k of fun miles is a performance bargain IMO..  :happy2:
Like you say though, it's down to what suits you as the owner/driver of the car..

Not aiming this at you Robin in anyway  :happy2:

I would rather spend 2k on my own car to really make it my own car, I picked the golf as in my eyes there is no comparison to any other cars, so to me spending 2k on mods to make it up there with the "M3" would be worth it as I'm 20k better off  :jumpmove:

Never been in/seen a stage 2+ car but I'd imagine there insane! Well worth it too from the figures/graphs I've seen!

Plus I'm only 21 so anything more than my ed30 would be a mortage on Insurnace

it gives alot more than 5hp.  stage 2 k03 TFSI will give 260-265hp.  stage 2+ will give 275-280hp.  but thats only peak Hp.  it will make more power/torque over the entire rev range so overall it is much faster, especially in the midrange.  stage 2 is only marginally quicker than stage 1 IMO. But stage 2+ is notably faster than stage 2 especially in the midrange which is what yyou use on a daily basis

....I agree. I much prefer a more personalised car by modding.  :happy2:

My comparison was less about costs but more about not stretching the performance envelope and adding mechanical stresses. There's no doubt that a Stage2+ will stress components more.

I had a GTI, rather than mod it, I bought an ED30 and modded that.

Heated seats, colour coding, better residuals, more tuneable engine etc - that all made sense.

Bought all my Stage 2+ kit second hand so will prob sell it for similar to what I paid.

Will lose out on standard depreciation, minimal parts depreciation and mapping costs etc. For 355 bhp. Well worth it.
