Title: Windscreen cracked!!!!
Post by: scott84 on April 15, 2011, 10:58:21 am
Hi,

Windscreen got cracked today by a Stone that got pelted into road by a worker using a strimmer on the a10!! Obviously I want it replaced. Have spoke to council and sounds like a paperwork exercise. Anyone else had this happen?!  :sad1:

i can recommend autoglass, they use genuine VW screens too - just make sure if your colour tinted to specify this before replacement  :happy2:

screen replaced first, fight the council with you receipt second, but i doubt you'd be successful  :ashamed:

Not always true. They will only use genuine VW glass if you expressly request, and it will cost you a higher excess.

When I had to have a new windscreen on mine, it was either Pilkington or a VW one at an extra cost of £150!

Must have changed their tune then.  I had a new screen in my Ed and asked for a VW screen, and they fitted one, no extra on top of the normal £50.

Spoke to autoglass, do not offer VW stamped glass unless special order. Says glass supplied is as same as VW but without the stamp. Another headache!!!!!

Itll most likely be pilkington, which in all fairness is just as good quality.

When i had a screen on my R32, they offered pilkington and heard horror stories of fitting so had to pay another £80 or so for a genuine vW one... cos i'm anal and want teh vw stamp... but then i hear they're the same but with a stamp, and the horror stories were down to the fitting person... hmmmm

autoglass replaced mine no problem

same deal, non VW branded (would have needed extra cash and extra wait if I wanted VW branded).
Just make sure you get the right tint, and stand over the fitter  :signLOL:

Key points to check are the top gap (from roof edge to screen) before and after replaced (it shouldnt be too big) , as well as the alignment to be able to view the VIN plate.
Ask fitter if he's done VW before too
Guy fitting mine specifically removed a strip at the bottom and trimmed both bottom edges before fitting, it looked a bit brutal but he confirmed they dont fit properly if you dont do it.
Mine has been watertight  :happy2:
