Title: At what point does a hpfp become necessary?
Post by: Gtiain on April 18, 2011, 12:49:21 pm
I'm planning on going stage one with a forge twintake, rev d dv  and non resonated milltek or a blueflame exhaust system. Firstly would it be a good idea to get a hpfp or is it not required at this stage. Also would it be sensible to get a twintercooler or would this also not be necessary unless I go a stage or two further? Thanks.

stage 1 = no mods requried

stage 2= downpipe requred, intake preferable

stage 2+= downpipe and HPFP required, intake and intercooler preferable

FWIW i suffered with heat soak @ stage 1 in the summer quite badly.  So the intercooler would have been a really good mod for me.

Forgive my ignorance but what is heat soak and how does it manifest itself?

An hpfp only becomes "necessary" wnen your actual fuel rail pressure can't keep up with the ecu requested value. If the difference becomes too large then the car may go into limp mode with a CEL in the dashboard.

heatsoak is when the inlet air temperatures on the car start to rise and your car loses power as a result. This is normally caused by a tuned car or hot weather resulting in the intercooler struggling to bring temperatures down.

You will also suffer heatsoak in traffic as there isnt air passing over the intercooler to aid cooling

It's not necessary but it would make your stage one feel much stronger. Even on my standard car and map it gave much better grunt!!
