Title: Collecting ed30 tomorrow, HPI check says stolen recovered!, help, advice please
Post by: kiddfrost on April 21, 2011, 11:15:18 pm
Hi, I'm all geared up to collect my ed30 tomorrow, just did a HPI check and its coming up as stolen recovered!
What do I do, stay away or is this not a major issue?

Registered in Jan 08, Stolen Recovered in May 08

Can I have some advice please.

lots of cars get stolen, doesnt make it bad. lots of cars get crashed it doesnt make it bad if they are repaired correctly.  Id be wanting some cash off though

Also I'd speak to your insurance company, they may charge you through the roof for it.

Yeah by all means. Ask if he's got any receipts for any repair work that's been carried out. I'd check your insurance company though, have you had a quote?

I would steer clear because he never mentioned it to which says he doesn't want you to know
ask yourself why? is there damage that was repaired.
If it was me I would want £2-3000 of the asking price and thats before I'd even looked at the car.

Yeh the fact you didn't already know is slightly worrying...........

It would have to be mega cheap for me to touch it, and even then it would have to be mint. Think about the time you come to sell and all the potential new owners having the same thoughts you are!

If you can afford to buy something else then I'd walk.......

You got a point there. Something that I found odd was that the hpi check said no previous owners but he is saying he is the second registered owner of the car. Are these hpi checks accurate? Also its showing just 1 service at 11k miles. He says it has a FSH

nothing wrong with that at all.  theres 2 servicing routines.  Most are on variable which can be anything upto 18k in some instances.  or fixed which is every 12k, so either way the most it should have is one service if its on 11k

He was asking 15k which was over the top anyway but we settled on 13900.  spec is:

Black, DSG, Xenons, Privacy Glass, Winter Pack, Cruise Control, Highline, MFSW and RNS Satnav.
Its done 55k miles.

Is it fair to post the link? I'm just thinking he may not have known as he says he's had it from 20k miles.. or am I just being too nice

Don't think it unfair to post the link, the responces you get may well be of more use to you. There are some traders on here I believe who may be able to tell you if that is cheap or not. You can also use the fact it is SR as a further bargaining tool. Also if you fo duck out take a look at this I can't believe it still available  :happy2:

This is pretty much the spec I'd be happy with

I'd leave it personally mate. It will be a nightmare trying to sell it in the future and you May not get the full story as to its full history. Wait for a clean honest example mate... less hassle in the long run.

If you would consider a 3 door then get in touch, im trading mine in on Monday but would consider a cash sale. Top spec, dsg black 3 door ed30. Has every opional extra, only want around 13k.

I'd walk away, cash is king. If you've already got bad vibes about it leave it alone.

Can't see how the seller spent what would have been £15k + (?) on a car but didnt spend £30 on a hpi check - I bought mine from a dealer and still hpi checked it (albeit I have a friend in insurance that did it for free).
If it was advertised as stolen recovered it wouldn't be so bad..

I wouldn't give more than 10k for that tbh given it's SR tag.. They'll be plenty more come up mate and it is gutting, but I would hold out if I were you.

Mate - if in doubt just walk away, there are plenty of Eddies around. I bought mine from a vw dealer for 13k. Fully loaded with 2yrs free servicing. Unless someone is upfront about something like this I just wouldnt bother. Good luck with your search, there looks to be plenty of good ones that comeup for sale on here   :happy2:

the day you buy is the day you sell.

the SR tag will make it much harder to sell on. if you can get another 10-15% off I'd go for it. If not just wait, there are plenty of nice clean cars around.

I wouldn't personally take it.  Apart from potential ongoing problems, resale may be awkward for the very reasons you see emerging here.

I know someone, who may decide to add his thoughts later, who had his car stolen and written off.  It was subsequently recovered and the damage repair estimate included replacement of the engine because of the state of it however very shortly afterwards it turned up on eBay as repaired (Almost certainly with the original engine) and the buyer would be none the wiser.

HPI checks are also being found to be unreliable at the moment, lots of issues with their information.

1 service in over 3 years and 55K miles? That alone would be enough to make me not even consider it. The seller sounds a right shyster!

Walk, for some reason i would never go look at a car that is CAT C/D or SR. Especially if its not been highlighted.

Would like to agree with the comments 'that there are plenty of examples about' but i cant find anything that im happy with. Finding the right spec, DSG, xenons, MFSW highline & armrest with good mileage is proving to be very hard.  :rolleye:

Ok, I'm gonna leave it unless it goes for a bargain price.

First of all, A BIG THANKYOU to all  :happy2: , I have greatly appreciated all your input and opinions with which without I may have made a costly mistake because of my impatience.

I have spoken to the seller, he seemed like a respectable and decent chap. I explained it is showing as stolen and recovered on the HPI check. He says he HPI checked it and it came up clean 2 years ago when he purchased it. He seemed quite supprised and said if he knew he would have declared it in the advert and probably would never had purchased it. He will look into it and get back to me out of courtesy.

So far its cost me £20 for the Bankers Draft, £10 for the HPI check and £27 to cancel the insurance, a lot less than it could have cost me.

Still on the lookout for an ed30 but unless I find one in the next month my ride is gonna be a 1996 1.4 Peugeot 106

Thanks again.  :happy2:

Can't believe no one is snapping your hand off - a fully spec'd ed30, looked after and some freebies all for trade money. if I already didn't have one I'd be half way up the motorway right now

Another factor with a car that is stolen recovered, is that in the event of a total loss claim during your ownership, I understand that an insurance company will pay out less than for a non SR otherwise equivalent example.

Unfortunately I can't consider a 3 door, its got to be a 5 door..

It seems like a SR is just plain bad news all round, it needs to be going for an absolute bargain price to make it worthwhile.

i think you did the right thing, walking away  :happy2:
What I would say is that not all HPI checks are equal , some show data, some dont!
The SR pool is also pretty varied, from minor cosmetic damage (if any) to near writeoffs.......
so dont rule it out of hand, if you have the receipts for the work that was done then it may be a chance for you to grab a bargain.
but as others have said, it immediately rules out almost all buyers when you come to sell.
