Title: The New Ride... (Update)
Post by: Sunglasses Ron on May 02, 2011, 07:54:31 pm
Well as most of you know, the Ed30 has now gone after 3 great years of ownership  :sad1: She will be sadly missed and I had some great times in the old girl..
But life goes on and last Wednesday I finally picked up the now motor from the dealership in Newcastle  :jumpmove:

For those who don't know what I was getting, it's a 2011 BMW 135i, with DCT (DSG), Xenons, Phone prep, upgarded Stereo, USB interface.. I also had the BMW Performance CF Spoiler and BMW Performance Black kidney grills added ready for delivery.
The car on it's arrival looked like this..

I had the car booked in the next day at The Wheel Specialist in Nottingham to get the rims powder coated gloss black and was more than pleased with the results..  :drinking:
So this is how she is looking now..

Already racked up 500 miles on the clock and have to say I am loving the car tbh. Couldn't be anymore different from the likes of the Golf, but then i'm comparing a modded car v's a standard one, RWD vs FWD, 2.0 blown 4 pot vs 3.0 blown 6 pot etc etc. The drive is much more driver involved and for a big old hector, she's pretty nimble on her feet to be fair.
Performance is very good, even in standard form and again totally different from the Golf. You could be forgiven for thinking it was a NA car for the way it delivers it's power, very linear and no big lump of boost/torque low down, just effortless power from tick over revs.
The DCT is obviously similar to the DSG in regards it's a dual clutch box. But I don't think it's quite as quick/smooth as the DSG was, but the DSG had Revo Stage 2 software, so again not a fair comparison. What it does have though (when sport mode is on) is a nice big lump of torque after each change which shoves you in the back when the next gear engages, quite addictive I have to say..
Oh and the brakes  :surprised: 6 pots as standard and a completely different ball game compared to the Ed30's milk bottle tops.. :signLOL:
More pics and updates will come in due course, but all in all I am a very happy chappy at the min and will hopefully have many miles of happy motoring over the next few years (and the occasional trip to Pod of course   )..

Is the chassis bent in the middle

Just kidding Ben. I do have a soft spot for these and it does look quite nice in White which surprised me. The black wheels make it look a lot better.  :happy2:

That looks [DannyDyer] nawwwtyyyyy [/DannyDyer] Ben! I know for a fact these sound gorgeous standard, aside exhausts and intake mods.

I think most people have a thing for the straight six 1 series coupes.
Thought about the LED angel eyes (the white look ones)?   The black nasal grilles look smart

I have some Angel eye upgrades in the garage, but they didn't look much different tbh, so they are going back. But I will look at other sets at some point..
Forgot about the noise, and what a noise it is too.. The six pot sound is mint and for a standard exhaust and I can't believe how loud it is..  :surprised:
They sound fruity on a cold start too..

As with most BMW interiors, they're certainly not fussy and flash. But it feels soooooo well put together and robust. The steering wheel is proper chunky too..
Wish I could of opted for the Nav, but I was already waaaaay over budget, so the full leather and Nav had to be missed out, but hey ho..

And another random one..

Standard power is 306bhp mate, but most RR at around 320+ from what I have read (on DD rollers too)..
Bit like this one...

Will see what mine kicks out in a couple of weeks at the RR day @ RS Tuning..

Love the white with the black wheels

I agree with Mat on this too. The car mechanically is great, I just don't like the "saggy" look from the side.  :sad1:

At least YOU don't have to look at it whilst driving :signLOL:

Having spent the last hour reading your "build" thread from your previous ed30(all50 pages) and being new to the forum the BM proably has an evolution to come, but being a fan of vw's  I'm not so much a an of the new motor - I'm sure in time it will be epic but not for me sorry  :ashamed:

50 page build thread?!?! Think you maybe confusing me with someone else mate  Jonny C maybe?

It's not so much a pack mate, but more individual items. The CF mirrors are like £350 each IIRC  :surprised: so not getting them in a hurry..  They are mint though and I would love all the BMWP parts, but Iaint rich enough  :sad1:

Yak yak!

I was lapping a DCT M3 yesterday, I actually think it works really well and has some advantages over DSG. No auto upchange and the throttle blip coming down is wood inducing. Very impressed with it.

Ditto on that one Mike.. Although mine hasn't got 'as' nice a rumble as the V8, but still nice all the same.. My old man's M5 used to do it and that barked at you..

Add a LSD because it will be as helpful as it is on a Golf.

Brief report of results and dyno chart then please Dave?

Stock: 298bhp and 304 ft/lb
Tuned: 368bhp and 390 ft/lb

Will be back on the dyno in the morning, had to get a few road miles on it to see what the drivability is like (which is like stock but just a lot more power, especially from 3500rpm onwards) and will get a final power graph tomorrow.

Havent played with the throttle map yet so throttle response is pretty much unchanged as I have found with these that they become a bit 'surgey' if you try and alter the throttle map by more than a few percent. But they dont have a dull throttle anyway so may leave it as it is.

Over the last few days I have been testing mpg figures on the way home from work, usually see 26mpg consistently but today got 29mpg with the map installed, that soon changed though after going through a few dual carriageways and roundabouts. The quaife diff makes a big difference to the way you drive out of bends!

Got to thank Jason for all of the help with the map, this guy is a god when it comes to mapping BMW's hence the reason that many of the big brands in the BMW tuning world use him to develop their software.

Nice results there Dave..  :happy2:

Stock seems a bit on the low side (albeit near stock figures) from others that I have seen, but with it being 2nd hand, who knows what the previous owner was like and how it was driven/fuel was used etc..

The impressive thing is the gains that you've made..  :surprised: Shame the N55 isn't so easy to tune (OBD)  :sad1: Does give similar gains though..  :jumpmove:
Be interesting to see if those figures go up once the map has settled and fine tuned and more importantly some miles put on her..

Ive had stock (manuals and autos) make from 292- 320hp so I wasnt suprised by the figures. All end up making similar figures when tuned. The dyno is great for creating safe, reliable, powerfull maps but on road testing is a must if you want perfection. We have tuned 100+ n54 based cars over the years but having your own allows you to try different things.

N55 is a lot easier to tune, much less work involved in the actual mapping, just need the right tools as most require bootmode (benchflash) but similar figures are achieved. Im down with a few well know BMW tuners this weekend mapping cars at a BMW show so will hopefully steal learn some new techniques  :signLOL:

Tbh theres nothing paticularly special or different about tuning these engines, but its good to work with the people that have been tuning them since day 1 rather than trying to work everything out yourself from scratch.

No mate, want to get a stock run under it's belt before mapping to see what the starting point is going to be..  I will then use Paul at RS Tuning to RR after to see the gains. Plus it's quite a tight dyno, so it certainly won't be over inflated figures..

Went back to the stock map today, made 304bhp and 314 ft/lb, found a few error codes stored related to AFM so cleared them and stock power was restored!

Will be starting the mapping again tomorrow night  will be interesting to see what you can get from a tight n55 engine :happy2:

* Little Update *

Was working up North today and thought it would be rude not to pop in and see Dave @ PDT seeing as I was passing. A) To pick his brains on software routes for the new motor and B) To claim my free RR run that he promised me for guessing the identity of his new motor  :jumpmove:
Well seeing as he has his place all kitted out with a nice new extension to his DD rollers, it seemed an ideal time to find out what the new girl was kicking out fresh from the factory. Plus I also had a benchmark to work with..
So Dave sat it's fat arse on the rollers and off she went...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg14.imageshack.us%2Fimg14%2F4163%2Fphoto5ao.jpg&hash=a73f2e51498b72cb1f562d37b7f4d1b585041bd5) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/photo5ao.jpg/)

Results were decent considering it's got 1100 miles on the clock and still reasonably tight I would assume..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg534.imageshack.us%2Fimg534%2F2724%2Fphoto6wa.jpg&hash=31b8c6fce7a94e33b5fd3d9b219c82a5503ddc51) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/534/photo6wa.jpg/)

So a decent platform to work on and more importantly see what gains I will get once she gets here ECU tickled..   She is by no means slow at the minute though, as my mate found out when following me home in his Stage 2+ S3 the other night (not a flee's bo**ock between us). Not sure who was more shocked tbh, me or him..  :surprised:

Just like to say a big thanks to Dave for today. Not just for the free power run, but for the sharing his thoughts and expertise. The guy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to tuning, i'll give him that..  :surprised:  :happy2:

So all in all, so far so good...  :happy2:

Superb powers, and yes, they look the shiz with the stripes. I'm considering them on mine to break up the murderer look!

Oh, and on that subject I've had it since Monday, it's fricking hilariously brilliant. I 'accidentally' had it sideways on a diesel spill within the first 5 minutes and thankfully it is very progressive... although I wad hoping to get used to it before finding that out - oops!

Little update..

Had the car down @ DMS on Friday afternoon to give it's ECU a little tickle here and there. Choose DMS for a number of reasons, main one being that i've yet to here a bad word against them (including customers from all over the world who have payed for Rob to travel over to them  :surprised:) and know a lot of people who have dealt with them and been more than happy. Plus after meeting Rob when he came and did my Dad's X5 the other week, I spoke with him in depth about my car and after listening to his extensive knowledge the decision was made.
It was a long drive to their premises in Southampton. but i'm soooo glad I went. The machinery this guys deals with is simply   Ranging from cars like mine to all AMG Mercs, BMW's and just about every Porsche you can think of including a 868bhp Porsche GT2 . He is also trying to persuade one of his mates/customers to buy a Veyron so he can bring it upto Supersport spec..
Some snaps from outside his premises and you'll notice his next door neighbour deals with some half decent stuff too..

Anyway, after the ECU was out and flashed, she was put on the rollers to see what difference it made...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F6568%2F89588452.jpg&hash=c6370343919007105ea5e6968d24b0a1f1d4bf02) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/38/89588452.jpg/)

The car was RR'd at Dave's (PDT) the other week when standard and we were running thin on time with me having to get home, so didn't do a 'before' run. But once done the results were as follows..

Standard..

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg708.imageshack.us%2Fimg708%2F2724%2Fphoto6wa.jpg&hash=fd04d854810d230c7bee66deca4b5c014493a6ad) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/708/photo6wa.jpg/)

Car feels much much stronger and the difference seems a lot more noticable than when I had my LCR and Ed30 first mapped (they may of taken longer to adapt though)..

So all in all a very happy customer   Now to see what she'll do @ Pod when I decide to run her..

One word, different! Until I put it against the clock I honestly don't know. Just because the car is bigger, different power delivery etc. It's certainly quicker at higher speeds, I know that..
I would expect it to be quicker on the 1/4 mile time wise, but then it will leave the line quicker for a start. The terminal speed will be the interesting part..

Power at Flywheel (BHP) :                      369
Weight without Driver (KG) :                   1600
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) :      234.33
0 - 60 (Secs) :                                     4.85
0 - 100 (Secs) :                                   10.94
60 - 100 (Secs) :                                  6.09
Quarter Mile (Secs) :                             13.08
Terminal Speed (MPH) :                         109.34
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) :               12.98
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) :           110.57

Don't know the exact weight, but even 1600kg should get you down the strip in 13 flat :happy2:

1550kg gets you under 13 seconds for sure :driver:
Title: Re: The New Ride... (Update)

Weight is a bit out there John  :surprised: According to the hand book the car weighs 1545kgs (1530 for a manual) and that's with 75kgs ballast (driver) and a 90% full fuel tank.. That would make it about 1430kgs there or there abouts, which I think is a bit light tbh (I reckon about 1500kgs)..
Be interesting to get it on the scales at the 30-130 event next year to find out for sure..   But going of the result from my comparison with my mates Stage 2+ S3 (when standard), it certainly no where near 1600kgs  :surprised:
Yanks are getting low 13's @ around 106-107mph with stock DCT (DSG) cars..

Title: Re: The New Ride... (Update)
Post by: tony_danza on May 24, 2011, 09:07:05 pm
Gone, for a couple of reasons.

I've got a little one on the way, so the plan of buying some Pork got vitoed and the 135i was next on the list.

I'd toyed with keeping the clutter as it wasn't costing much and was huge fun on track, but asked for a PX deal out of interest. They rang around for prices and a local clutter dealer jumped at it and it was daft not to let it go. I'll build something track dedicated in time, but I've bigger fish to fry right now..

Also added the black '135i' badge I ordered from the States. Basically keeping everything as black and white as I can. Trying to have no other colours interfering other than the plates. Speaking of which, due to them being '11 plate' I have managed to cut them down a tad which IMO looks a bit better..

Which ones are you going for Dave? Seen 3 different types now and all are a lot dimmer than the OEM ones, so not bothered with them tbh. My mate has spent about £200 on bulbs now trying to find ones he's happy with..  :surprised: :signLOL:
Don't get me wrong, they look good at night, just very dim in the day..  :sad1:

Did you wrap the mirrors yourself ? I was going to get them sprayed for 40quid off the lad that did my roof ... I like the black badges too :happy2:

Wrap them myself?   :signLOL: Abortion springs to mind if I had attempted that..   Got them done locally for £45.

Badges are pretty mint to be fair. From the states/Canada and only took a week to come  :surprised: £16 all in..  :happy2:
