Just picked up my 2004 Golf GT TDi and so far very happy with it.
One thing that confuses me though is that when I press the button on the remote to unlock the door I have to pull on the handle twice before it opens.
Is this a design thing or is there a problem with the door?
It happens everytime and always opens on the second pull.
Thanks

The standard set up is one press opens the drivers door and two press for all doors
The coding can be changed so all doors open on one press

Sorry its not the remote that doesn't work properly its the actual door handle.
I press the button on the remote then pull the door handle and the first time it doesn't work then the second time I pull the handle the door opens.

Had this when I bought my car but on the passenger door. Turned out to be the lock mechanism getting stuck which freed after letting go of the handle on the first attempt. I could get my door to open first go my tapping/thumping the door handle before attempting to open it

my n/s/f used to do the same,i put a lot of wd40 onto the lock and that sorted it

Did you just open the door and spray inside the part of the lock you can see or did you take off the door card?
Thanks

Well I gave the lock a good old spray of WD40 last night and the door is still the same.
Still have to pull the handle twice before it opens.
Could it be a child lock/anti hijack thing?

Just to update i've noticed that this is the same for the inside handle as well.
If the doors are locked, then unlocked I have to pull the handle twice before the door opens.
If the doors are not locked in between the handle only needs to be pulled once.
This is the same getting in or out of the car. - Weird!!
Does this sound like an anti-hijack thing or is there a problem with the lock?
Thanks

Are you talking about the interior door handle?
On old cars, you had to manually unlock the door before you could pull on the door handle to open it.
VW have incorporated this into one "lock" via the door handle. One pull to "unlock" and one pull to "open".

Both the internal door handle and the external one.
I lock the car then unlock.
First pull of the handle - nothing
Second pull and the door opens
Same for the inside
Lock the doors with the switch then unlock
First pull of the silver handle - nothing
Second pull and the door opens

Sounds like the lock mechanism is buggered.

Yeah thats the same technical term I came up with.
Thankfully got a 12 month warranty to claim off.

Finally got this sorted.
Seemed that the metal catch on the door frame had been pushed in too much.
Mechanic moved it out a few mm and all is now fine.
