Following on from this thread http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,26833.0.html I decided
to try the OEM LED number plate bulbs (after reading a number of German forums pages).
Sourced from http://www.vw-audi-Shop.com but you can visit any VW dealer or http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk
cost will be around £25.00 for each unit.
- Remove the old units, there is a plastic tab nearest each wing, I used one thin screwdriver to hold this in and another to lever out the unit
- There is another tab holding the connector in place, again I used a small screwdriver to un-clip the tab
- Fit the new unit and click back into place
There is no bulb out warning in my 2006 car (possibly a silent VCDS warning but I can live with that as I dont even have a reader!)
These are standard on the German Golf Style and the 2012 Mark6 GTI, see http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=190980.0
so now you can stay in fashion with the MK6 and any BMW friends you have!
I'll try and add some pictures when it's dark during this weekend.

That looks really good! great thread with pictures.
I have just ordered some replacement bulbs for the old holders as was reluctant to part with so much money. Would be interested to see how they look in the dark, to see how they light the number plate itself.

These look great and a nice mod - bit pricey though at £50 a set.
-
have to say they look a real nice upgrade , ive been looking on e bay at the full units but there £40 so £50 for genuine ones that you know will fit straight away seems a good buy ill have to put them on my list :happy2:
-
Got these in my R, love the look of them.
on one side only in this pic obviously

Cheers Shaun. A definite improvement. :happy2:
The new units just clip in as well? No screws?

yes, exactly like the ones already in.
-
Might have to invest in some. Love all the OEM mods you have done on your Rocco R already.

Yep, if you're on http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk you can see some instructions in one of the sub forums.

Nice upgrade!
-
Nice, but I think 50 quid is steep!
-
It's all relative, I've been looking at the MK6 door switches http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,29345.0.html and think they're a bit expensive

I find with things like this that when you sell the car you can take them off and recover quite a bit of the original cost (usually about 80%+ in my experience) by selling them on, with a aftermarket LED light i doubt you would get a penny back :happy2:
-
Great Pics, really nice upgrade, makes the rear look much crisper. However £50 is a bit expensive.
Looking forward to getting my replacement LED bulbs in the next few days. Hopefully will look as good as the whole units. Will put some pictures up as a comparison to the OEM units.

That would be great, I've read that some bulbs can be really, really bright (or not last long because of heat build-up)
Anyway, here are pics of the BMW OEM units, http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?s=773090663cdd26430977c73590a79080&t=229500 they look very similar to the VW ones with two LEDs.
-
Top find can't beat oem :happy2: I've had loads of cheap eBay LEDs and they blow after a couple of months so I'm back to normal filament bulbs at the momment
-
Im considering these ones

I got the same ones 4 months ago after seeing Dom's picture above. They are great :happy2:
Bought from Hids-Direct's own site:

-
Gonna go with the recommendation of HIDS ones if these fail on me then I might stump up the £50  the modding bug is taking hold again must resist!!
-
I purchased a set of the oem LEDs last week and have been experiencing intermittent issues with them not working & producing a bulb out message via the highline.
Also sometimes they will switch off after about 10 seconds & produce no warning.
Any ideas as I'm thinking of returning them to the dealers for another set
Thanks
-
Now that is a cute mod (OEM)! I might have to speak to my stealer.
-
I just ordered the X-tec ones too... Thanks for the ebay links guys

Decided against these when I bought my Pirelli earlier this year and bought some 'cheaper' ones!! :rolleye: :stupid: They properly burnt out to and left all sorts of crap inside the bulb holder!! :fighting:
Buy cheap, buy twice!
