Title: Those that have removed air con. . .
Post by: Tfsi_Mike on June 04, 2011, 05:16:11 pm
Those that have removed aircon (weight saving), which drive belt have you used for there being no air con pump.

I have removed my condenser as it bugged me that it was infront of my big intercooler. (crazy decision given our 39+ degree C German summers :scared:). May as well go the whole hog and save a few more kilos and do away with the pump & hoses...

Just not sure which aux belt to use.

I gotta say I really don't get this idea of stripping your car down to save a few kg.  Surely you'll 'ruin' the car and certainly affect any future resale opportunities.

It can always be replaced Stu, as Hurdy did with his.

Does it really do that much for you?

Surely you can negate most of that with half a tank of fuel??

Mike.

Try David@Seremotors he will be able to supply you with a shorter auxillery belt.

Will have a look later see if aux belt swap is simple enough swap.  Saves wear and tear on the pump seeing as I dont use it

Although noticed a bit of a transmission oil leak the other day so probably be spending time and money on oil seal first :(. It has gone on both last major services :s

Has crossed my mind a few times.  Mini mike on the way and possible move to the Uk where I'd have to start paying road tax & tax on petrol (sad times)

Going to bear with it though and see if I can not use the car as much, possibly use the lupo the mrs has stored at her grandads. . .

Stu is on to something here. I use my car for work and the stuff in my boot can be quite heavy at times. The weight varies a lot depending what's in it. I never notice any difference in acceleration whatever weight i'm carrying.

My point here is that for most the Mk5 is a daily driver, not a 0-60 strip tart.

If you want rapid 0-60 times then the lardy GTi probably isn't the car for it.

Sure taking stuff out will save a few KG's here and there but aren't you just all kidding yourselves??

Just my humble opinion of course  :signLOL:

I agree with you. I could lose 20kg off my ass.

For anyone interested: 06F903137L (21.36 x 953mm) is the belt to be used if bypassing the Aircon pump.

Just ordered one  :happy2:
