Post by: JackG on July 16, 2011, 12:21:33 pm
Hi guys,
Well now I've got my car clean and I've been to many shows I can't keep wondering how pepole get pictures to look so good compared to my digi cam on my iPhone  :signLOL:

So I may get a slr camera for Xmas.......so I looked around and now I'm mega mega confused.com
The numbers and ISO and lens size etc have confused the hell out of me!
Id like a pretty good one and I'll mostly use it for taking pictures of cars may take the odd picture of the hound again  :signLOL:

If you guys could give any suggestions as to what you guys use would be a massive help  :drinking:

What do you want to get from a camera??

If you just wan to get nice pictures a decent compact or bridge camera would do the trick :happy2:

You don't need Expensive cameras to take good photos - you need a good photographer!

But stepping up - you have high-end compact cameras with independent controls like dSLRs do, bridge cameras which are essentially the same with a greater zoom lens (I think) and full-on SLRs. I'd be wary of the latter since IMO it's a pain to lug around and not easily pocketable enough so you have to have a think about whether to take it with you.

I had a similar dilemma where I wanted to step up from my Fuji F50 point-and-shoot to something more advanced. Was thinking about bridge cameras but found even them to be too bulky to stick in your pocket, so I went for a high-end compact (Canon G12) which I love.

You need to think about what you want to do with your camera. No point in buying an SLR that is used maybe once a year.

Good point, does look a bit gay walking round with those big cameras  :ashamed:
I thought the compact ones were pretty useless? Ive got a normal digital camera bit old now tho
Maybe just a decent compact one may do the trick?

Have a look at the G12/P7000 thread - both are very capable high-end compact cameras and have similar functions to dSLR. Obviously not as good but have a think about things.

Go to dpreview.com and use the Features Search to look for cameras meeting your spec. Make a shortlist of compact, bridge and dSLR and then go to a camera shop to try them out.
