Title: Mav's Red Ed30 - More interior goodies - 28/10/11
Post by: MaverickFSI on July 27, 2011, 07:23:58 pm
Hi guys,

I'll treat this as an intro as well. My name is Pete, I live in Ye Olde Norfolk and I'm a Aeronautical Engineer for British Aerospace working at RAF Marham.

My car history has always been VW's. My first was a Mk3 1.4 CL, great car, well I thought so at 18 years old  :signLOL:, I then committed myself to the Mk3 and made my way up the engine sizes, 1.8 SE, 2.0 8v GTI & finally the 2.8 VR6. I then decided to go for something completely different.... a Corrado G60  :happy2: Still have the Corrado, it's currently undergoing major changes :)

Now the Golf, what can I say... puts a smile on my face every time I drive it... the end.

Spec;

5 door
DSG with paddle shift
Heated cloth/leather seats
Dual Climate
Puddle lights
Elec folding mirrors
Headlight washers
Rear parking sensors
OEM blue tooth
Tinted rear windows
Armrest
MFSW

I'm sure there's more but I'm just enjoying how it goes  :party:

Cheers mate, plans... I'd like xenons & the RNS510 system, I had this in the Scirocco and loved it. Performance related, I've been talking to VWR and may get stage 1 but we'll see. I might just go for their panel filter first and go from there.

Though one thing I feel I should point out is the carbon inserts aren't in the right way up, as the weave doesn't follow  :wink:

Yeah I thought that when placing all the parts together before sticking on, there was no orientation I could have the stickers which made the weave flow, but for what it is it's not too bad I guess.

Hey chaps,

Again nothing major just another subtle touch to, this time, lift the interior. I recently purchased a chrome headlight switch from Demon666, cheers bud  :happy2:, so I thought I'd share the removal & installation should anyone be considering the same up lift.

Original headlight switch;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5Golflightswitch002.jpg&hash=2cd474fe02ecb5937db7d586469aad7a7a34e127)

Removal procedure;

Position the switch in the 'O' position, depress the switch, it will push back approx 5mm or so, then rotate the switch clockwise the 12 o'clock position. It should look like this...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5Golflightswitch001.jpg&hash=4a872613a00c8c489feaa64cb0ffda6d5a070a70)

Carefully extract the light switch, remember there's an electrical connector situated at the back, the light switch should come far enough out to allow easy access to connector itself.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5Golflightswitch003.jpg&hash=f046d38c08c1864e44633ab20f47c372daa4c5e7)

Simply disconnect the electrical connector and connect to the new headlight switch and carefully insert the switch back in to the recess insuring it clicks in to place and wallah, brand new shiny headlight switch.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5Golflightswitch004.jpg&hash=f99b71569f8d257134b2a911729f09ecb66df3e3)

Would love too especially as Revo have £100 off a re-map at the minute. It's justifying it to the missus, she already grumbles how much fuel it uses already. And it's not like you wouldn't notice the difference of a re-map when she mashes her foot down and is pinned in the seat and comes stomping in '... Err what's different about the car? Seems faster? (Me) ...Umm really I hadn't noticed!'

Nice Ed30 btw  :wink:

Just another little touch to the interior today.

Ordered these bad boys from Germany on Sunday arrived today  :surprised: :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FGemJohnsWedding084.jpg&hash=6d9637823e889d0e9178671fbb670584a06ec93f)

Having now had a good chance to look over them, I'm very impressed with the quality and finish, but then it is German so...

Before;

Chuffed with the end result, nice little up lift, winner  :happy2:

Nothing substantial to update but this weekend I thought I'd give the car a bloody good clean especially the exhaust tips as they were black!

Here's a comparison to see what they did look like and what they should look like

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5GTI002.jpg&hash=02ab6c54c31c711cc8d986bd27621a6d4796124a)

...and here's what they looked like completely polished up

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5GTI004.jpg&hash=dc6a7a15a1c970401ba3ff6acb7593085a653340)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5GTI003.jpg&hash=b60f41fc01c5c2fbd16f97638d6f4ed0e5abfcd2)

They are by no means 'brand new' clean but look a lot better than before. For anyone else thinking of polishing the tips up all I used was Autosol, purchased from Halfords, for just under a tenna and used some ultra fine polishing sand paper (4000 & 8000), it took the stubborn carbon build up right off  :happy2:

Here's a few of the car all polished up

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5GTI005.jpg&hash=a0c2d7e09c102e399271eecd208cefe34c9147e9)

Cheers mate, got a few more in the pipeline very soon just waiting for bits to arrive.

As for the Ed30 badge, as mentioned above, eBay. I paid just under £12 posted. It's just the rear badge stuck on to the front grill. It bonds very well, I've had several pressure washes and no dramas. It's a nice subtle touch to the front so bag yourself one!

Just some more subtle touches to the interior.

R32 wing mirror adjuster & master window switch.

Here's a pic of the old set up;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5Ed30switches002.jpg&hash=7daaee482ebc029ff704745987cf688d5d3c3e79)

Using these tools I then carefully up-clipped the trim;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fhh201%2FMk38v%2FMk5Ed30switches001.jpg&hash=0d705dcba3340ab8d5653e3010f9cba1d69cfa95)

Vast improvement having the chrome window switches.
Have you ordered one of the petrol cap release ones too?

Hi mate, switches looking good, I saw someone else fit these on another forum and thought they looked great, gonna order a full set from USA after christmas, saw a shop selling the full set for around £109 i think it was, thats for the main panel (4 windows switches, mirroro switch), Fuel switch and 3 seperate window switches, i thought thtta was a good price anyway.

Just taxed car today and 2 new tyres to pay for next, then front splitter painting, then stg 1 remap, then holidays then i can spend on other things like switches and save up for stage 2+, its all spend spend spend, would be easier of i could sell my old MK4 1.8T  :sad1:

Cheers  :smiley:

This is from 1st hand experience, I'd proceed with caution when purchasing the U.S spec parts. A few weeks back I bought a master window switch from the states, which was OE, but once installed it didn't work, none of the switches operated the windows, slaved the original back in and all works fine, so my advice to you would be to go with European spec parts as they will definitely work as the wing mirror adjuster I got from VW works a treat! Might be slightly more $$$ but worth it knowing you'll be getting parts that work first time and not having to deal returns etc.

So your 200+ quid lighter then  :grin:, regarding tyres, I know a MD of a tyre place in Norwich who can get me good deals on tyres, for example when I had the Scirocco it cost me for 2 Pirelli Rosso's 245/40/18 300 quid, which isn't too bad for a premium tyre. If your interested let me know what tyre you want and I can get a price if you like?

Looking forward to seeing the fresh paint job on that splitter  :happy2:

I'm having the drivers side skirt sprayed by VW next week as it hasn't, for some reason, bonded correctly, so they said we'll order a brand new skirt in from Germany, spray it up and fit for you... for FREE, ace  :jumping:

Gave the car a bloomin' good clean today as the weather was ideal.

- Cleaned & sealed the wheels
- Polished the tail pipes
- Polished glass and lights
- Dodo Juice red mist detailer for the body work, comes up really well.

NIce job on the side skirt, i have one of mine where paint has peeled off and gone flay where it looks like it has been stone chipped to death, maybe i should ask them about that when im down there getting my half a key i need now.

Well I had cruise control fitted today and some other coding work done by him at same time (Full review on VAg Com arear), well happy with what he did for me and the price more so  :happy2:

Will be going back next year as i do like th rear reversing camera!.

I know what you mean about the switches, its i suppose you pays your money you take your chance, but i ship stuff regularly to USA and likewise have packages shipped from USA to me about once per week so sending them back is nt  really an issue as i can put them in with other packages and get them forwarded back  :happy2:

I usually get tyres from my mate who works for a tyre place and he generally get sme pretty good deals, I only ever buy Toyo Proxes T1 as i been using them happily for last 5 years and like the feel of them, they good in wet, not too noisy and they are only around £200 for a pair including next day courier, if he can beat £200 for a pair shipped to me then no worries i will gladly take a pair in next couple of weeks lol.

Yeah im so looking forward to getting the splitter painted as its the only thing letting the car down now (Aprt from the 2 kerbed alloys, thanks previosu owner lol).

I'm planning to have cruise fitted in a couple of weeks, I've been quoted £90 fully fitted inc. parts. How much was yours, if you don't mind me asking?

Saving the pennies for an RNS510 now.... Yay!

Must be getting excited about having the car on the road soon?

Yeah, there's a chap on eBay who offers retro fit on just about anything for modern VAG cars, luckily for me he's based in Gt. Yarmouth, which is about 20 miles from me.

Hey Pete, You going to see Eddie in Gorleston on sea then?, he did mine for me, Nice chap and knows his stuff, would recommend him to anyone/everyone, same price i paid, but i paid a little extra as he coded me a new remote too  :happy2:

He also did some coding work for me, fixed my headlamp washers (fuse and airlocked), turned off seatbelt beeper, activated DVD in motion, adjusted footwell lights and various other bits, he will aslo let you know what yu can add to your car easily and what its set up for, apparantely i could add folding mirrors and the switch and they would work straight off as already set up for them.
Ask to see his reversing camera (For when you have your RNS fitted), its something im going back for whwn funds allow lol.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's his name. Sounds like you got good service there. When I arrange cruise fitting I'll have a good chat with him regarding options etc. Yeah defo look into rear camera once RNS510 is fitted. The elec folding mirrors is a nice touch, got them on mine.

How's the splitter coming along, been painted yet?

Yeah expensive running costs but well worth it.

Not sold it yet? You put it on Pistonheads?

Stage 1 does sound tempting and I bet is amazing however tyre replacement will come round quicker ;)

My plan is to steadily spec the car up, all the toys and then see about tuning, might only go induction & exhaust but we'll see.
