Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to the forum and last week took delivery of my black '08 Pirelli with DSG. This is my third GTi after owning a 'H plate mk 2 16 valve for years and an '07 candy white mk 5 from new. After having the candy white GTi for two years, I went to a 335i coupe, a 2.0T TT, a 2.0T A5 coupe and am now gladly back in a GTi.
The Pirelli is fully loaded with RNS510, bluetooth, MFW, folding mirrors, cruise etc.... but there are still some mods I'd like to do starting off with a remap. :driver:
Having trawled through the very informative forum and then on several company websites, I've narrowed my remapping options down to Shark Performance, Revo or Blue Fin.
In terms of performance mods the most I want to do is get a remap, a performance exhaust and an induction kit so which remap do you think is best for the KO4 engine? Just like everyone, I want the biggest BHP/torque gains possible for the money, but more important than outright pace for me is for the car to feel very smooth and driveable in town, with the remap being unnoticable unless you put your foot down. Reliability is also key and I wouldn't want to be running around in a car with any warning lights on particularily as it's my only car and my daily driver.
Shark Performance are charging £449 for the map and claim 300bhp. If I went with Shark I'd go down to their premises to get them to set the car up. Bluefin is £462 delivered and claim 287bhp. Revo (fitted via JKM) costs £660 (including K&N Panel filter and a new diverter valve) and the claim is 279bhp.
The cost difference between the three isn't a problem, I want the map that is the most drivable and reliable whilst still offering significant performance gains over the standard car. Your thoughts and experiences would be much appreciated.
Cheers guys!

Revo and Shark will give similar results, with BF being slightly less. JKM just have very tight rollers.
Revo can be as progressive as you like or as aggressive as you like, depending on what settings you prefer. Shark has good results, but not sure how flexible it is with regards to how you would like the power to be delivered (sure someone will be along to clarify that).
Bluefin is as it comes, loaded on and off you go..
All three will give you a nice performance advantage over stock, that is for sure.. :driver:
-
Go Revo! They have been working on the TFSI engine for tears! I had Bluefin and wished I had of gone revo! Don't worry about intake and exhaust before you get a break upgeade!! The R32 stoppers are good!
-
Thanks for the advice guys. I had heard that the JKM rollers were a bit stingy so was wondering if that was why the quoted BHP gains were +20bhp less than Sharks.
Does anyone know if I went for any of these remaps and then in the future got a turbo back performance exhaust and induction kit whether I'd have to pay the full cost of another remap to liberate the extra power these would give me? i.e. would I end up paying twice for a map?
-
I thought that the pirelli gives a lower mapped figure becuase of the valves used in the cylinder head , i know its the same engine , but im sure i have read it somewhere?
also i wouldnt bother with the panel filter , waste of money.

My Pirelli was mapped by Wayside VW at Towcester. I believe that Richter do the remaps for them and it came with a warranty through the VW dealership. They seem to heavily advertise the remaps and a lot of the demo cars have the maps on them. I have been very pleased with mine and it is very smooth all the way to the red line. Passengers do not know it is mapped given the progressive nature. They have no doubts though when they feel the acceleration which is amazing for a Golf

That's really interesting, I've never heard VW themselves offering remaps. Sounds promising though if it comes with warranty. Any idea on numbers (price, BHP, torque)?

^^^ The richter map is just a Superchip's map but you pay more and don't get the Bluefin handset :happy2:

So in your opinion of all these maps would you go Bluefin?
Having read a bit more around the forum I'm now thinking of going with either Shark Performance or Revo with STS boxes. That way it seems you get the benefit of getting the car set up by an expert on a RR but also have the option to revert to stock or adjust the drivability of the map via the box............... oh, and they seem to offer that bit of extra power over a Bluefin
-
I'm also looking to get a remap for my GTI KO3. I was thinking of uprating the DV and panel filter then going for stage 1 software. What companies are best suited to KO3 units, Revo? Also is it necessary to up-rate the DV and panel filter for a stage 1 remap or can they be left stock and would this affect power gains?
-
Personally on the TFSI I would go Revo.

Cheers Steve. Have you had any remaps on your car?
-
Hi Spencer, I can highly recommend Ben and the guys at Shark performance, and if you pull your finger out and call them asap they have an excellent offer running until the 6th. The remap for your car will be £299, or you could get an STS for an extra £150. :happy2:

Yes I have had both Superchips and Revo.

Wow, that's an amazing price!!! I couldn't see it on their site as it's still quoting £449 for ED30/Pirelli's but I'll give them a call. If I can get the stage 1 map and STS box for £450, we have a winner I think! :happy2:

Thanks for the advice Steve. I think I'll drop Superchips from the list leaving me with Revo and Shark. If the off of £299 at Shark is on though, I think I'll have to go down that route, given they too seem to have a great rep.

You will, ask for Rob or Cheryl, they will sort you out, tell them Lee Page gave you the recommendation (no I'm not getting a finders fee ).
I have just loaded a stage 1 map on swmbos GT PD140, and its fantastic, if the vRS wasn't mapped with someone else I would be chatting them up for stage 2. :happy2:

That's brilliant cheers Lee, you're a star. :happy2:
I see the offer runs up to and including Monday 5th. I'm just about to go away for the weekend so will call, book the car in and pay for it Monday.
-
I would ring them today just to confirm if it finishes at the close of play on Monday evening, you will kick yourself if you miss out on that offer. :driver:

Hi Lee,
just called Shark and as long as I pay for the remap by close of business Monday, the offer is valid. Gotta dash off for the weekend now but will call them Monday to sort payment. I told them you'd recommended them to me. Thanks again for bringing the offer to my attention!

Why not add PDT to you wish list plenty peeps on here with great results by either his own map or revo ones :happy2:

To late me thinks! :jumpmove:
-
Go REVO it's awesome... mine made 288BHP on JKM rollers... Mapping done by APD Performance... :congrats:
-
You'll be happy with the shark remap :happy2:
If you do eventually get the stage 3 remap, make sure you get it set up at shark HQ though.
If you are buying the sts, the map you get emailed will be the same as the one you will get if you make the trip to the HQ. Might save you a car journey thats all.
-
Don't discount superchips (Richter via Wayside VW) as I have a Pirelli with one of their maps and it is extremely smooth in all circumstances. I get economy in the high 30's when I want as well as extremely good performance when I need it
-
I would still go Revo! Don't like superships customer service! I've said before, I'm on stage 3 which to them makes no difference if you have a full in take or panel filter or a full system or just a cat back! How does that work??

I've had shark PDtuning revo and bluefin maps on my car, superchips was the worst of the lot :popcornsoda:

Mine made 286.4 bhp from bluefin on those very same rollers  stage 1

Peak power figures mean nothing, its what happens between 1000-7500 rpm thats important. This is why having the car mapped on a dyno always gives the best results, the tuner can see the power and torque curves and measure power at any given RPM and throttle position. Peak power is a measurement of power at 100% throttle for a very brief period of the RPM range, how often do people drive at full throttle at 7000rpm?
-
the Revo map for the Pirelli makes the same power just a bit lower down the rev range (so you get a slight torque increase), been running it for 25,000 miles and no issues, really nice understated car when mapped
-
Go to the shark HQ get it set up n the rollers then get the STS after imo. Thats what i did.
Id expect figures similar to what JKMs rollers produce. Had my fabia vRS on jkms rollers and made 213hp.(210hp on another dyno dynamics as well) on sharks new bapro rollers it made 211Hp, so pretty similar id say and definitely not over reading, there were more than a few guys from the likes of awesome GTIs and AMDs rollers who were searching for their missing Hp lol.
Imo expect about 280-290hp
-
Make sure you dont look at headline power figures only, its all about driveability!
Personally I would go Revo, but hey just adding to the mix....

Was that not with the help of a Milltek downpipe though? :P

Go Revo. I am looking forward to getting my Pirelli dynod after trying a Forge twintercooler with stage 2, it was 300 hp at 6k but wouldn't pull beyond 6.5k and 320lbft of torque from memory at JKM. Back to simple stage2 with just Revo chip, TBE, filter and forge DV it is miles better and pulls much harder to 7k so I have no doubt it's 300+hp on modest settings for timing and boost.
Revo were very helpful assessing the issues and testing, all free and I simply removed the Forge twintercooler. They had experienced inconsistencies with them, so I removed.
You get what you pay for I did have a cheap map and it was crap .....
-
had APR and REVO and would recommend both with a definite preference to REVO :happy2:
my reviews on both maps on and ED30 in the product review section :happy2:
as someones already alluded to be aware that some people with later ED30/Pirellis had issues at stg2+ due to different weight valve springs.
From what i remember there was a VW TSB on it, as well as I think REVO improved the map to work around the issue.
(anyone care to confirm or deny where this stg2+ pirelli valve spring issue ended up?)
-
Valve springs not covered in uk by a tsb, that said ours is in for it's service next week so will ask, Revo borrowed ours for a week as is consistently showed the issue to work on the map

No :signLOL: with catback, many moons ago

Lol, so it gained an extra 10 horses from the catback . Thought you said before it was 276.5bhp before exhaust.
I've had Bluefin and Revo, I personally prefer Revo, like the way the SPS works and map seems to run well, customer service I experienced was very good too. Saying that, customer service (via phone) from Superchips was also spot on and very efficient.
-
ive always found superchips rude on the phone! They never really gave me the answer i was after. ive asked them twice about dsg remaps and they say you dont need them??
You will get answers from them but its hard getting it out of them!
-
the guy on the phone to me, insisted that anything over 300lbft on my K03 TFSI would potentially snap the camshaft.
That was the tipping point for me changing in the end.
-
So revo's codes too harsh then sy?? :popcornsoda:
I cant think of any K03 being well under 300Ib ft? normally at least 320Ib ft from memory? and thats from watching at JKM several times..

You've lost me there. Thats not something ive said, that was the rep @ bluefin who told me that over the phone. After the issues that i was having with their map, followed by that response, resulted in me looking elsewhere
FWIW most stage 2+ cars make around 300lbft on JKms rollers. stage 1 around 270lbft

Hi Lee,
Just a quick one to let you know I called Shark yesterday had a good chat with them and have booked my car in for Friday 16th for a remap. It was all paid for yesterday so I got the Summer deal of £299 which is an absolute bargain for a remap from such a reputed firm.
Thanks for your help on this and thank you to the rest of you for your opinions, it was much appreciated.
Roll on the 16th!! :driver:
-
I just dropped my car off there this afternoon for some DSG7 remapping R&D. Guy there with an S3 had just swapped from a bluefin stage 1 remap to the shark Performance stage 1 remap he seemed very happy with it.
He had it on the rollers there and made 306hp with twintake fitted. Which is bang on the money, as you'd expect stage 1 with stock intake to make circa 280-290.
He gave me a lift home and it certainly shifts.

Thats great news, looking forward to hearing what you thoughts are once the ECU has adapted. :happy2:

Make sure you post up the rolling road result, as it'll be the same stage 1 as I have, but haven't had it on the Rr
