Title: Just had cambelt done, Can they get the timing wrong?? Photo included.
Post by: WILLZIE on September 03, 2011, 10:49:30 am
Just had cambelt and waterpump done, got it back with a couple of issues thats really stressed me out after paying alot of money for, fine before it went in, now got it back worse off!. It misses a beat or two only on idle!, slightly chugs, drives absolute fine though, no warning light. I'm worried they may have the timing wrong, is that possible??? or just coincidence for somthing else?
Also they broke a pipe in the area of the cambelt and and tried to descise it by fixing it with sealent, which made me hit the roof!  :angry015:, could this effect the idle???

Car booked in for next week, service advisor was very glad I reported it to his attention, so at least it feels their on my side.

Let me know how you get on, I'm wondering if mine could be a tooth out as suggested on here as I have a misfire on cyl 3 that iy seems to count on idle.  Only used basic measuring blocks so far though.

Just had a compression test. Results are okay.  Also just bought some injector cleaner incase it's sticking.

That's shocking!
My brother had to take his back twce as it was a tooth out, my mate had to get his done again aswell. They had no engine light on. But they distinctly felt a lack of power, and also increased fuel consumption.

Would it mean a complete cambelt  kit to adjust?

Yep!    Caught it in time for photo proof as its started cracking and droping off already!! Probly the apprentice!. :angry015:
Won't say which VW,.... yet, as they have booked it in on a day where the manager & workshop controllers there, so their taking it quite serious which has kinda helped, I said I wouldn't dream of doing that to someones car, not quite sure what that box is, carbon deposit box or somin!?.

I'd hate to imagine they got the timing wrong, or belt tension!, find out thursday!, such a bloody long wait!

TWICE!!, 3 times in all to get it right??, didn't it damage the valves while driving it?

Yep, was an independant vw specialist. the car runs fine, my mates was done at a seat dealer, he ended up going back to a vw dealer and paying again to have it done as seat dealer insisted it was ok, but clearly wasnt the case as he felt like it was a different car once it was done at vw, his car was featured in a few magazines aswell

Jesus thats bad how hard would it be for them to order the new part in and fit it ! i hope it was a trainee ..but if it was could you trust him to carry out large repairs.

that part is about £8 to buy, so about £4 to VW.  Shocking.

Just like the time a so called very reputable company forgot to secure the engine/Gearbox loom correctly on my Ed after fitting a LSD.  It merrily chewed itself through on the aircon fan, I repaired it myself (used to aircraft looms).

Or the time the same company checked and replenished the oil whilst the car was jacked front wheels off the deck............. It was nearly a Litre over full when I checked later that evening.......

They are out there!

Absolutely shocking, really rubs me up the wrong way when stuff like that happens. My golf also chugs at idle, had the timing belt done from VW to around 20K ago. Fuel consumption is pretty poor to, what does yours average on the trip comp on a mixed cycle?

Can leaving the car like this cause any engine issues etc....

my 2.0tdi does this drives fine just on idle again like every other cycle misses. doing my head in i get 48mpg on average 50 odd if take it real easy on motorway.

Any one have any ideas???

It's a simple fix for them.

I would order the part and when you go in to collect grab the service manager by the short and curlies an tell him to replace the part now and pay for it. It's literally 30 secs to swap it over. They will be able to get the part in 24hours aswell (although if you order tomorrow it will be Monday when they get it. If you really want to go to town though you could try and get a new charcoal cannister out of them which are about £93 iirc.

Reported it straight after the bank holiday! (after someone also scrathced the car and drove off in Windsor, brill weekend that was  :sad1:).
Anyway service advisor booked me in, free Tiguan loan car, replaced part straight away, washed & cleaned car, given a 15% discount card, and free MOT next week!
apparently they sacked the person who did it, even the technician said it too, how true though you never know!

BUT.. when I got home, still misses a beat every now and then on idle, rang the next day to say again as I said this could effect my emmisons on the MOT, got given a free fuel filter, so will give that ago this weekend!

We will see!

ah, yes! :stupid:
The timing is correct!, tension, teeth in correct place with the belt!. Mpg is as normal too!. Just put a new fuel filter on so willl see if that helps, though not sure if its the correct filter as the one that has just came off has 6.4 Bar stamped on it and the new one is 6.6!!??? (yet another post coming)

If it doesnt, I will get them to do a compresion test nex tweek.
