Title: Wing Mirror Glass - auto dimming?

Morning guys,

on the drive in this morning, i had to demist the wing mirrors. Noticed the drivers side glass hardly clearing the mist at all - the glass only got slightly warm. I figured the heating element was on its way out so i just needed to replace the glass.

Did a couple of searches on here and quickly discovered that there was normal heated mirror glass and heated auto dimming glass!! i had no idea it was an option!!

ok, sounds daft but is there a quick way of checking if my drivers side mirror glass is auto dimming? To be honest, if it was auto dimming, ive never noticed it!!!

Their always auto dim if you have factory fit auto dim interior iirc

Compare it to the passenger side which shouldn't dim when there's a bright light on it.

I'm going to removed the glass when i get home but will still be daytime.. does the auto dimming mirror have extra over the 2 that are for the heater element?

Don't think that's true, auto dimming interior mirror is standard on most MK5 models.

Correct, standard on the GTI.

Yes, two extra wires that go in at the top. Also it has a slight blue tinge to it.

Be warned, the auto dimming mirror is nearly £300.  :fighting:

Rang up TPS and they quoted £140 +VAT for the Auto dimming mirror glass... maybe they have come down in price?

My door mirror auto dims as soon as I push the little button on the rear view mirror . I thought it did both sides too

Check again left and right both have different prices

1K0 857 522 R - Right - Mirror glass with automatic anti dazzle - £126 plus Vat (aspherical-wide angle)
1K0 857 521 F - Left   - Mirror glass with automatic anti dazzle - £176 plus Vat (convex with carrier plate)

Right - 7M4 857 522D £37.10 plus Vat
Left - 7M4 857 521D £29.95 plus Vat
