Title: Is this possible?
Post by: Edition_30_P on September 18, 2011, 09:31:39 pm
Hi Guys,

I've done a search but, Haven't seen anything regarding my query? I was just wondering if it was possible to do a 4 Wheel Drive conversion on the Ed30? And, if it is possible what would I need to do so? I was considering getting a new Car but I've been through so much to get this Car, spent quite a bit on it and, Haven't got the money to buy a new car! So this is the route I want to go down along with A BIG TURBO and, my Diff!

So, if anyone has info to assist me I'd be very greatful  :happy2:!

Cheers,

Phil

You planning to go offroad?

You planning on keeping the engine or swapping out for an R32 block? Would imagine it's a big job as iirc the R32 has a different floor at the back to accomodate the rear diff so you'd spend silly money just to have that done

It's doable but not financially feasible...

Na, not planning to go off road,  :signLOL:! I'm just looking at a Big Turbo and, going really far with the build so, was thinking 4WD would accommodate the Power better than FWD... Wouldn't?

Don't say that  :surprised:! What figures we looking at roughly and, what do you reckon would be needed?

Be better off starting with an R32 / 4motion and transplanting a 2.0T into it I'd have thought?

Or buy an S3...

Agreed.  Would be cheaper to twin scroll turbo an R32 though and that would be mighty mighty fast!

Hmm, wouldn't even hazard a guess at cost. Have a read through this, not strictly a GTI but should give you a few pointers

I know. But, as mentioned in my 1st post I don't have money to change my Car and, didn't think that the transplate would be that expensive!?

Phil, yours is a nice carM what about changing for an early r32 and turboing that?

It would cost £k's to do the transplant. If you added that money to the sale of the GTI you could get a S3....

I'm starting to think that this is a no go now  :sad1:! May just save for a few years and get me an RS3 instead  :driver:

What about running an R32 block in FWD? Might be less work to configure that as you wouldn't have to mess about with cutting the floorpan and fitting diff, driveshaft and haldex controller

A big turbo 4x4 ed30 will drink too! If anything just get a diff and you'Ll be more than happy!

Think a Diff is the sensible solution for now  :happy2:!

Thanks guys for all your help!

4WD over-rated in my opinion.  better to save up for a golf r or buy an s3 methinks.

had a number of fast 4wd and to be honest, prefer front wheel drive for confidence weirdly enough!

Any of these ever come up on the used marked?

just putting it out there:

Audi's TT-RS race car ditched the Haldex and has front wheel drive only
The Scirocco R has front wheel drive only

i'm with you in that i wouldn't want to put big power through the front wheels, but i also mirror other posters' sentiment in that it is pointless to try and put 4WD in your Ed30 when you could easily buy an S3 for a lot less money, or an R32 if you want to stick to the Mk5 and turbo that. it would be A LOT cheaper by the sounds of things!

Storm Developments always seem to be pushing the boundaries on these types of projects, I have no idea if there work is any good but they manage to wedge 2.0TFSI into MK2's so they maybe a good place to start...even if it's just a costing exercise! :happy2:
