Off to see one on wednesday. How can I tell that its a 170? Does log book give kw rating? I thought about looking for a DPF but will be haard to see and the later 140s had it too. Any easy ways to see under the bonnet?
Cheers
-
I think it's 125kW and I *think* the 170 has a boost gauge in the dials
-
call local dealer with chassis number? surely the engine code would tell you
-
pm me your reg. ill check it
-
We had a 170 TDi Golf GT Sport and in our 2007 version there was no boost gauge, if that helps.
Plus at that time the 170's had the twin GTi style exhaust, whereas I think the 140's at that time didn't.
Specs may have changed through time I guess though.
That said a look inside the service book inside cover will show the little KW sticker, whatever 170PS translates to in KW.
-
Just look on the stickerin the boot as it will have the kw rating. Make sure the chassis match's on the sticker and the screen too
-
+1 for the exposed tailpipes, and iirc the 170 has the GTi brake set up just without the painted calipers, 312mm front, 288mm rear.
If you test drive it you should also notice the power difference (if you have experienced the 140).
-
the 170s have a chrome twin tipped exhaust like the gti, and the 140 doesnt or you could just put the reg plate in one one of those phone aps and it tells u the bhp etc.
failing that call the dealer and ask them to check the number plate/ chasis number
-
think the 140 is 103 kw and the 170 is 125kw
-
did a 170 golf the other day with 260mm discs on the back
-
Cheer Maxitrol you are correct on the KW ratings. The 170 did also come with smaller disks on back hence I cant use that as a fool proof way.
Keano you are a star. PMing you now

arr we are good at that on here :signLOL:
-
This is meant to be my sensible daily, however Im sure it will get many mods. I will have to show off my pride and joy at somepoint. I know I will get lots of abuse as its a Audi TT.......... However some of you might let me off when you realise it has over 500bhp :signLOL:
-
Have you been told about the 170 injectors failing? Have a search and you will see what I'm on about. I've got a 170pd gt tdi sport and I have not had any issues as yet. I don't know if it was just early cars, around '06-'07.
-
ooh get pics up of the audi :notworthy:
-
Its a 56 plater with 66k on the clock. My mum had a 140 passat and it was ******* had the fuel pump fail that VW eventually sorted. We have only have VAG in the household for years and the passat was the worst car yet! I know the 170 has the better P technology injectors.
-
Isn't the 170 dpf meant to be a pain in the :booty: to remap?

Yes however I will get the Miltek downpipe and decat and get her mapped.
-
Apologies for the duff info regarding the rear brake size. Was going to say Shark Performance will to a remap and DPF delete, PM shark_90 for more info. :happy2:
-
Cheers buddy. Its not duff info as most 170s have larger brake but not all it seems.

Also there is a sticker on the inside of the Driver's door pillar, stating 170 Ps (well mine does anyway) :)
And as already mentioned, the twin chrome tails and bigger brakes up front are also indicators that its a 170.
What spec is your new car?
I took many months finding mine,
Reflex Silver
3 door
170 Ps GT Sport
Xenon's
18" charleston alloys
Leather interior
Cruise Control
Dual Climate
iPod Prep in Arm Rest.
I knew what I wanted, just had to drop down a year (07 - 2007) as I initially wanted a 2008, but a small compromise for the spec I wanted.
Make sure you check about the Piezo Injectors....google it....and get VW customer service to book it in for a batch number check (TEL 0800 0833 920) Just be aware, they cannot tell the batch number from the VAG COM diagnostics, rockerbox cover needs to be removed and the actual injectors inspected for the faulty batch number.
Just had mine done, £2300 worth of replacement Injectors and wiring loom, all Free of Charge,..... peace of mind, don't want them to fail on the motorway...it sounds horrible !!
good luck with your purchase !!
-
Cheers. So if mine has the problem injectors they will be replaced FOC? Any links to save me reading loads of rubbish (or should I stop being lazy?)
-
A couple to get you started.

loved the Audi thread btw :notworthy:
-
Thanks. Sadly the Golf one wont be as good as you can see where all my money goes (and Im a poor student now)
-
how much did the new "project" cost you?
You mention it isn't in great condition....even more of a need to get those injectors looked at, other wise a £2300 bill :surprised:
-
Will be ringing VW uk in morning and give them chasis number and hope for the best. It has no history hence Im geting cambelt and water pump and a service done asap.
-
How can I find the engine code of mine?
-
Engine code should be on a sticker on the cambelt cover mate :happy2:
Darren
-
