hello ppl
bit of a bad one tonight. any typos are because my hand is tapoed up and i wanted yoiuy to be opart oif thge experience.
ok, so my BSH true seal arrived today. looks good :happy2:. missed the delivery man soi wenbt ti the depot to collect. unfortunately i took the wrong route of a cchoi9ce opf 2 and got stuck in traffic.
got there just in time (after running around the depot like a possessed man on fire) (!)
so, on the way back it unfortunately starts raining, but i get home just as it stops. it's getting dark but i think what the hell i'll give it a crack at fitting it tonight. mistake! pre assembled the bits i could in my living room and headed outside. quite dark now but i still persevere
start by taking the engine cover off. i managed to slice my hand on some of the clips and it would not stop bleeding! i work in a hospital and live around the corner, so i help myself to some gauze and bandage and stra[p myself up and head back to continue. very dark now. i persevere with the help[ of nthe external; lights to my flat and my iP{hone as a torch.
then i realise there's no air filter in the intake box, and i assume there hasn't been for at least a few thousand miles since the car last went in for some warranty work. WTF!!! dealership will be getting a call ikn nthe morning. in between all this i managed to drop one of the OEM bolts and the BSH washer into the depths of the engine bay. it was too dark to retrieve them.
finally, onto fitting. i started with the filter guard heat shieldy thing. i'd already dropped the washer down but i thought i'd fit it anyway and buy a washer from B&Q later.
picked the wrong size socket uip (after selecting the right size in the first place!) and when i tighten the bolt the heda gets wedged in the socket and now will not come out. pitch bl;ack now]
car now not usable, hand taped up, mashed my socket set thru total stupidity, lost some p[arts and realise that my turbo and engine are probably now full of all the rubbish that the UK's roads have to offer.
given up. don't need the car for work so i'll have to fix it tomorrow.

ouch on many levels!
and i thought my day was bad after being told my rear calipers had ceased!
-
Sorry to hear its been a bad evening modding.
Hope all gets sorted. i always wait till i have plenty of time and light to carry out any work n the car just incase of any mishaps
-
harsh :sad1:
-
Where did you look for the filter? On a stock engine it's in the engine cover.
-
yeah i looked again in the light. thankfully it DOES have a filter
rest of the story still stands.
any idea how to get this bolt unstuck from my socket? tried heatng the socket with my cooker to expand it but that ain't worked
-
someine spellchecked my title!! it was for effect :fighting:
-
Sounds rubbish... I've learnt from similar experiences to wait for the perfect conditions to fit bits.. regardless of how excited I am lol
-
Got a vice? Or some mole grips?
Grip the shank of the bolt and use a ratchet on the drive of the socket. It should be able to be rotated on the bolt and should release.
-
It must something to do with intakes! When I fitted my evoms all was going great until I came to removing the pipe from the turbo, talk about stuck, I ended up kneeling on the slam panel leaning over the bloody thing when it finally came loose. Unfortunately I was pulling with everything I had so the pipe and clips were moving rather fast when they hit me in the head! Result, several minutes spent lying on the garage floor unconscious, then a trip to minor injuries and 3 stitches for my trouble.........
-
My inpaitience and excitement to get things done ussually lands me in situations like that, I feel for you! :sad1:

Hi pal. Been there got the t shirt, its what modding is all about lol. Right how to get your bolt out of the socket. Remove the socket from the ratchet then put the socket in a vice or some mole grips so that you can see the part where the socket attaches to the ratchet. There should be a hole in it where you can put a screw driver through, tap the screw driver with a hammer and it should pop out the bolt. Hope this helps. If not i'll post some pics up for ya
-
Gutted! Hope you manage to find the bits. I too have tried this, never really works, best off waiting for daylight and when you have more time than should be required as something normally goes wrong!!
-
Flexi magnet with an LED in the end could be your friend if it hasnt been suggested and obviously try removing undertray too :happy2:
-
cheers guys
managed to get the bolt out of the socket by heating it up, screwing it into the mounting point and then using the back of a hammer to wedge it off slowly
got the CAI fitted now, with some help from the boys down at PSI Tuning (couldn't get the clip off that fixes the back portion of the intake to the turbo housing). i used another washer and that one little screw is not a big deal
car feels more responsive now, and is a little noisier lower down but i'm not sure if that's because the engine cover is off or because of the CAI.
not sure it was worth all the hassle tho!

If you're not remapped then performance improvements may be minimal with just an intake alone.
Nevertheless give it 100 miles or so to allow the ecu to full adapt then report back on your thoughts.
-
Whenever I've got a "five minute job", I always make sure I've got a week free.

AFAIK an intake really comes into its own at stage 2+, although I fitted mine at stage 1 and after a few hundred miles it did seem to improve throttle response and mid range power, and of course it sounds good. Not worth the 3 stitches though..... :ashamed:
-
lol i can imagine. don't get me wrong, it definitely makes a difference to the throttle response, and i can drop down by one gear less for overtaking and stuff, and it looks nice but that's offset by the fact there's no engine cover anymore which makes the engine bay untidy. (that's why i was asking about the Mk6 engine cover - it turns out the facelift A3 2.0T also uses the MkVI's EA888 engine with less power but i thought it was the old EA113 engine and the engine cover and intake are separate so i was going to fit one of those.)
i'm undecided on the benefit. i'm don't think i'm planning on getting it mapped for insurance and resale reasons (as well as the fact it's pretty pricey). but at least there's a DV relocation port so i might get the forge adjustable BOV fitted so i can chav it up a little when i want, and turn it off when i don't :signLOL:
