Title: Squeal when moving off\changing gear
Post by: SteveS on November 08, 2011, 10:55:37 am
I get a squeal when moving off, it can also happen when changing gear to 2nd sometimes 3rd, (lower down the range happens more)
Cambelt was changed a couple of months ago.. they fecked that up being a notch out, but was resolved.

Is is likely the squeal and cam belt change are related?..

I'm not sure, does that come under the cambelt\water pump change?

Should do  :happy2:  Its the belt that drives your alternator / ac pump

Does it come under the cambelt or water pump?
If they change the waterpump do they change the belt with it..

The water pump is driven by the cam belt, the Aux belt is separate  :happy2:

Hmm, maybe I'm missing something, why would they have changed the aux belt if its not part of the cambelt or waterpump change?  :scared: :ashamed:

When I had mine done at BDM,Alex did the aux belt as well. Not sure if VW do it though.

Hmmmmmmmmm, I'm pretty sure it wasn't changed, i think i would know if it had been.
Dammit, how much does it cost to get that changed??

Only cheap mate.   Bout £11 for the belt and go back to who did your Cambelt and they may do it as a good will gesture for not doing it or suggesting you do it

Wishful thinking... this is VW Watford we are talking about Mike.  The belt might be 11 quid, but i bet it 1-2 hours labour.

Steve... have a look at the belt, does it look like its new (IIRC you only had the timing belt done over summer)

haha, i laugh at that! I have had so many issues with my VW dealer who did the cambelt that there is 99% chance of sweet f a.
Still ill try pull something off, i think i have some credit.

Please tell me they don't have to lift engine up to replace?

just vw cambelt change and waterpump change. no mention of aux.

excuse my stupidity, but how do i know I'm looking at the right belt? this isn't the one that you see right in front of you which goes round the alternator is it

lift engine up?  you mean the plastic engine cover? Its quite easily accesible anyhow

It is the one around the alternator, yes  :happy2:

Where are you based Steve
Title: Re: Squeal when moving off\changing gear

Watford way, Off junc 21 of M25 or 5 of M1.

I meant the engine, not the cover, to change the cambelt they remove the engine (lift it up)

So the Aux belt is the one round the alternator? Well ill take a look at it as its easy view on the left of engine and see what it looks like..

could any oil help here? I'm guessing not..

They don't remove the engine, its just supported due to having to remove the left engine mount.

The aux belt it the belt you can see on the left of the engine... the cam belt is under a cover so cannot be seen!

I'm pretty sure if you lubricate it, it will slip and you don't want that!

Water on it can cause it to squeal I think

Right cleared up. I will take a look at it.
Yes that's what i thought we would say about oil.

ill try, not sure it will pick it up. its only when moving, so the will probably get engine sound only..

Found it hard to tell Chris.

Reminds me that lately Ive had a noise on cold start in line with the revs. Sounds as if a belt could be rubbing on plastic almost.  Im sure its not but its the best way to describe it.  Goes away when warmed up aswell.  Will see if it does it in the morning and get a video.

Steve i can hear it... but I've not got the foggiest as to what it is. I recon that alex at BDM would be able to tell you what it is though.

Are you sure its not the DV or intake noise. Does it happen if you change gear off boost?ß
