hi
my car came with the standard whip fm aerial.
trying to replace the aerial with a fin that has FM and Nav, however the only combination aerial's in etka say for "phone and gps"
i was expecting "FM" to feature somewhere in the selection process like "fm and gps" but i cant find it.
anyone else battled this out before? :rolleye:
-
ive just spent ALL DAY looking at etka trying to work out how to do my DAB.
The shark fin doesnt do FM. there is a fin that also has the whip on the back that does FM but if you want to lose the whip completely you will need to wire in the rear window to be the FM aerial...
OR..... do what I saw someone else do and just put the whip between your headlining and the roof skin and then use the sharkfin dummy to fill the bolt hole in the roof. The guy said the reception was still great.
Im actually thinking of putting a whip aerial in either my a or c pillar for my DAB.

LOL ive just seen its you that wrote the post.... I thought you knew all this as you did DAB!? :) I often look backat your old posts for the part number for the aerial with FM and DAB lol
-
just looking and 3c0 035 057 N is listed as just gps (combination) and has two connectors coming out the bottom. thats gota be a winner i think??
i have the dab part list somewhere. (cant find it) but your right the dab aerial has a fin and a mast
-
:signLOL: yea dabs easy!!
ok i ordered:-
the proper dab aerial has a special whip
1k0 035 849 (it has a thicker screw thread than the standard whip)
000 098 654A Aerial adaptor
000 098 710A Aerial adaptor
1k0 035 501H dab/gps/fm/phone aerial base
and a 5m aerial cable which would have been better 5.5m
ps one of the adaptors was to convert my existing aerial to the new fakra's connectors on newer headunits i think
how did you do??

ive not seen a fin that does fm and ive looked A LOT!
all the fin does is GPS / GSM / AUX heater remote
For FM it needs to be the combo fin / whip aerial

which vw dealer is open at this time of night to order that lot lol
well i have FM diversity in the rear window so i've found a whip that JUST does DAB so i think i'll order that and hide it inside the car somewhere as never want a whip on my car
-
no you are quite right :happy2:
the fakra colour code tells us that the 507N is for gps and phone prep!

There is an FM/GPS fin without a whip aerial that was used on the earlier Mk5 GTIs up till around Sept 2007 - mine has one.

hmm id love to know the part number for that and are you sure yours doesnt have a rear window aerial?

I've the parts ordered to convert to dual rear window aerial like the mk6. If it works I'll post up part numbers.
-
what car is the 1k0 035 501 h from? I can search for it on etka but then cant work out how to look at the diagram it comes from (if thats even possible?)
-
1k0's golf mk5. it shows up as aerial base??
Radio + DAB + Standheizung + Telefon: 1K0 035 501 J
Radio + DAB + Standheizung: 1K0 035 501 H
although not supported by this german listing i could swear my base does gps, as there's a couple of plugs i dont use. got to take the headlining down so i'll double check
-
the only whip aerial i can find on etka that does DAB is the one from a 2011 golf plus 1k0 035 506 and matching whip 1k0 035 847. That base doesnt do gps though.

what was the blaupunkt thing by the way?
-
no etka tells you nothing. the dealer reverse enginnered the system by checking plug to plug all the way from the aerial to the head unit.
Blaupunkt do a big range of dab aerials. they have a small window stick on base thats just dab on whatever page i said in their book
-
this still isnt removing the whip though. Only way to do that as far as I can see is to get the antenna amplifiers for the rear screen and hope vw havent chopped off the soldered connections on the rear screen.
-
i'm beginning to wonder if vw uses gsm as the fm aerial?? blue fakra is definately nav and how many bluetooth kits connect to the aerial?
be nice to know if the purple plug on a fin is actually connected to the aerial amp, otherwise it doesnt make much sense. assuming you dont have a screen aerial
on the basis fm works with my finger the difference may be negliable?
although elsa shows a screen aerial for fm :surprised:
-
double
-
I did read someone say that they used gsm for fm and it was ok... end of the day an aerial is an aerial right?
Id love to have a load of different ones to test one day to get to the bottom of whats best :)
-
well i think your right. screen aerial for fm seems to be whats listed. with gps fin!
alex however says his fin has fm. looking at the part it has the same colour fakra's as every other fin. be nice to know whats actually connected!
i'm inclined to take a punt, bt i'll check what wires are coming out of my base first
-
been out and checked the base on my car. it has :-
fakra
white fm with power
blue gps
purple gsm
black radio (dab)
and these seem to make whatever you could possible need, probably with the wrong plug on the end

and thats 1K0 035 501 H?
I still dont want a whip on my roof. I've found the part for the rear screen amplifier that supports DAB so I think I'll try that and if that doesnt work I'll just buy one of these whip aerials that does DAB and hide it inside the car somewhere either in the A or C pillar or between the headlining and roof skin. It might not give quite as perfect a reception as if it was on the roof but I bet it wont be too bad.... I hope..
-
yes, it has everything! including a whip :signLOL:
check out the fins at caloroam. this screen aerial job sounds a nightmare. when do you make a start?
-
Hmm ok these calearo fins looks ok.. need 12v power though

-
yep i agree.
here's the reply i got from them re. my immediate problem. i would be inclined to cut the HC97 off and fit a fakra if i can find them? being italian its gota be sexy to right?? :signLOL:
The antenna 7727055 has:
- @GPS connector type fakra male blue
- @AM/FM connector type HC97 female
You will need an extra adapter for AM/FM p.no.7581112.
Radio AM/FM is powered.
whats the hole in the roof of the golf i wonder?? (ahh it claims to fit golf)
and no whip jedi!!
-
what does it mean that 'am/fm is powered' ? Does it just mean the signal is amplified and gets the power from a separate 12v feed?
-
the vw head units feed 12v up the aerial coax to power an amplifier in the antenna base. something to be careful if you move from oem. as you will see the white plug (fakra) is reserved for this purpose, and the reason why all the vw fin's are nor quite correct for fm except the fix/whip which has both black and white outputs. some vw fins have the green fakra (tv) 3c0 035 507T and i don't really understand why?

Hmm ok I didnt realise that.
So the twin white plug on the back of the rcd 510 puts out power through the coax wire.. in my case to power the 2 amplifiers in my tailgate.
I might try to pick up the cheapest VW FM only aerial I can find on eBay that has the correct amplifier in the base for a powered output and see if I get a better signal with that hidden in the car. If that works and is a stronger signal, I'll use that and get the FM/DAB one you have and run one in each c pillar as my own diversity system :happy2:
-
Another thing.... when you run a whip aerial with just 1 white connection then... then I guess your not using a diversity system.. as there is just one aerial. So your headunit must have ant1 and ant2 plugged into the same aerial.
-
checked mine today, and i found kiss is boarderline. its just over 50%, the stereo flag is flashing back and forth and i had to manually tune it.
the best aerials are aways going to be loaded whips, ones powered with a wire runing up the whip. standard vw basic i think, they have the greatest gain.
i had one cable on the original aerial on the roof, which somehow become two by the time it gets to the radio, probably via a diversity unit. the diversity unit was probably incorporated into the design when they use screen aerials so the unit has a change to find a good signal and avoid multipath on fm. with a single aerial on the roof this becomes irrelevant as you only have one source to receive the signal, but if they didnt bother with spliting the aerial cable into two outputs all vw radio's would log fm2 as missing. so i guess it was cost cutting to provide the roof aerial over the screen aerial, but then oh balls, we still need the diversity unit otherwise all the radio's will throw a fault.

Have you got this module under a black plastic cover under your drivers seat?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv453%2Fjedi-knight83%2Fphoto-2.jpg&hash=abd56c38367a325f0fdb63b5e6f29fd743e8c6a6)
Thats the diversity module that switches signal for older rcd300-mfd2 era headunits. They had a white and a beige plug on the back of the headunit. The white was for FM and the beige was the signal back to the diversity box telling it if the signal was weak and then the diversity box switched the signal.
With the new era headunits with the twin FM plug, they have that diversity module built inside them and both the plugs on the back are for FM aerial.... I'm guessing with just one roof aerial... your wires merge somewhere so they can both connect to the same source.
-
No! unless its in the seat? there's nothing in the carpet area!
-

no you slide the drivers seat all the way back and there is a black cover that slides off and this is under it.
If you dont have that then I've no idea why you have 2 fm aerial leads going to your headunit lol..
-
Mine has two aerial feeds and doesn't have the diversity switcher.
Later models have diversity build into the HU therefore not needing the diversity amp under the drivers seat.
Changed around early 2007/late 2006

I'm just fitting a RCD510 DAB and Blaupunkt aerial to my 2008 GT Sport. Can anyone answer these questions please?
Is it still necessary to run a separate 12V supply if fitting a Blaupunkt DAB aerial or will the power coming down the coax suffice? or
Am I best getting the VW DAB aerial base and mast (this appears not to have a 12V line to it) and just running the DAB coax?
Does the VW fit have amplifiers anywhere else in the aerial lines?
Thanks
I think I've answered my own question. See here:

just a quick question...
how difficult is it to fit the shark fin aerial to a car which has no aerial whatsoever on the roof?
mines a 2005 so i've got the aerials in the rear screen, but my little GPS aerial which is above the lights in the front only picks up 4/9 satellites for some stupid reason!
-
Hi daveangel,
ok i ordered:-
the proper dab aerial has a special whip
1k0 035 849 (it has a thicker screw thread than the standard whip)
000 098 654A Aerial adaptor
000 098 710A Aerial adaptor
1k0 035 501H dab/gps/fm/phone aerial base
and a 5m aerial cable which would have been better 5.5m
I am fitting a DAB antenna to my 4 door 5th gen hatch. Are you saying you recommend getting the 5.5m cable? Or are you saying the 5m cable is closer to 5.5m in length and is too long?
Thanks!
