Title: Engine cover :(
Post by: hoggj on December 02, 2011, 04:36:25 pm
Took ages to get my engine cover off (to fit new air filter), a lot of hassle just to change filter :(, but now I can't get the cover to fit back on, it won't pop back on any tips ??

Have the plastic grommets broken. VW now do rubber ones to replace them. I needed a couple so changed them all for not much more than a quid, think it is 5 maybe 6 in total.

Make sure the 4 rubber grommets are secured in the air box (one or two may still be on the poles on the engine).
Lubricate the inside of the grommets with silicone grease to make it easier to remove next time. It should just slot into place with a little downward force.

I had this problem last weekend fitting my new DV...
Check the rubber grommets haven't come off with the cover, if they have put them back on the four points on the engine. Put a bit of wd40 or Vaseline around the grommets and the engine cover points, it will fit back on much easier. The cover will come off easier next time.

After ages of bashing banging and tantrums, finally realised why! Doh!   :ashamed:

as above for putting it back on bit of lube, and always find it easyer to remove the cover if you warm the engine up first
