Title: Got some French Clutter in the garage........... with many plans.........
Post by: QD MBE on December 10, 2011, 05:47:19 pm
Just had a piece of Frenchie delivered.  (seller wanted to sell today so he could collect his BMW, so he delivered it FOC)

I want to play on the track, but always felt uneasy at using my daily.  So I have purchased a Renault Clio 172 Cup.

2003 - 54000 miles, Full Renault SH, I am the 3rd owner.  All original, needs a touch of tlc, and the lightweight wheels need a  refurb.  4 new P-Zero Nero's, Taxed and tested till august 12.

The plan is strip it out, and get it ready for the track.  K-Tech racing are going to assist, with bits I can't do or don't have the time to do.

The engine is so happy to rev, and the steering is phenomenal!  Been lapping a local round-about to get the Clio tripod going, and i just can't unstick the thing!

Even found £7 in the ashtray!

Pics will follow tomorrow...............

Nice one, when i bought my eddie I pointed out to the owner that he left some change in the ashtray and asked if he wanted to take it out, he took one look at the pennies and 2p's and said "nah keep em", I got home emptied out ashtray and the little panel under headlights switch and immediately saw lots of 20p's, 50P's ad £1 coins, counted it up and lo an behold £26.71 in change, that went towards the first fuel I put in it (much to Tesco garage cashiers disgust )

I had a 1.6 dynamique on the same plate Dave and that felt like it flew @ 9 or so seconds to 60! The 172 cup must be a HOOT to throw around :driver:

I took my friends 2004' RSC 182 with a milltek fitted for a short drive and it certainly pulled you along the ground rapidly.
I reckon you'll enjoy the cup a lot

Cheers Pete.  It certainly is a focused drive.

Plans will be a cage (not sure if full or half), some seats, harnesses and slap with the Bilstein stick, and maybe a de-cat exhaust.  I have a budget of £5k (including the car).

I will remove rear seats tomorrow, start the big strip...............

At least I don't have to strip the aircon, or ABS..............

Just a couple of carpets, rear bench, and i reckon that is it..............

Superb!  :driver:

Did you pay what you wanted to in the end matey?
Title: Re: Got some French Clutter in the garage........... with many plans.........
Post by: QD MBE on December 10, 2011, 07:11:55 pm
Paid less than that.  Someone dinged the drivers door 30 mins prior to me seeing it.  It was a very lazy (not sharp dent) and we haggled £200 off (thinking I could buy a door from the bay).

So today off came the door card, and it pinged straight back out!..................  Just 2 small dents to see, but no paint cracks.  Also found some shrapnel in the ashtray, so good deal had by all.

Very nice Dave cant wait to see what you have in store for it :happy2: I'm sure removing that GB badge will save you a few kg's to start
But if the 182 sounds anything like my 197 did after a de-cat im sure it will put a smile on your face.

Very nice. Will be a decent track car once stripped out as they are pretty tidy beforehand. Especially in cup form. Know a few guys that had 182's with matched inlets and the v6 air box is another mod too.

The more you take out the less there is to go wrong too ;)

Think 205 Gti 1.9.

I once had a wafer weight 1987 Pug 1.9 Gti and it was a great car, hence the choice.  We will see what the mods do.

Insurance with Adrian Flux - Zero NCB , fully comp, all the usual stuff (green card, legal etc) (as it was being used on my other car) with Declared Mods is £450.  Paid £420 as it stands.

Standby to have the airbags out...............

Missing cup splitter, k tec carbon one is nice. There stealth exhaust is good too. Is it on standard brakes? If so I would do them. Only thing that lets the car down from standard are brakes :happy2:

Love this, I'm a big fan of French clutter and how it seems to thrive on abuse and lack of mechanical sympathy.  My dad's got a 200 cup and I smile every time I drive it :)

Does that mean I can borrow your other motor when your driving this?

Well The week has been a busy one.  Couple of little faults sorted.  One being a leak into the passenger footwell, easily sorted, cleared a load of leaves out the drain on the scuttle panel, and re-seat a grommet.  Another was an engine mount with excessive play, again easily sorted - a tweak with a vice sorted that,  Dead easy.

I gave her a service, new plugs, K-tec panel filter, Oil and filter (used Decent Castrol Edge Sport Fully Synth).  The car sounds so much better now.  The plugs sorted out a lumpy warm idle.

Also fitted the Fabia spiltter, and paid a visit to K-tec to discuss plans................

Gave her a bath too.

Not bad for way less than £2k.  It owes me £2200 including all parts bought, and F/c insurance.

Agree on the dent, my guy charges £30 per panel and removes anything he finds, that one looks easy enough.

good choice of car mate

I've had 197 cup and 182 cup and nearly had a 172 cup when they first came out!

I'm on the lookout for a 172/182 for track days. ideally with the cup pack as its got the quicker rack and suffer top mounts which are hard to retro fit.

had a bit of bother this year so in hindsight should have hung onto my 197 as it was the perfect track car but i sold it in june but never mind.

sen a few 172 cups recently but they've all been messed with and I'm after an unmolested or at least well modified one. pretty hard to come by now...

Sold one Clio and bought another.................

New Clio has lots fiited, that I was looking to do on the original, so saved a whole bundle.

Engine has just been rebuilt by KTec (still being run in by me), has one piece valves, Cat 438 Cams (lumpy as a badly packed kitbag at tickover!!), new belts and dephaser.  Oh and a lightweight flywheel and new clutch.

Individual Throttle bodies, with f' big air filter.  Rev limiter set at 4500 at the mo, till I get more miles on it.

Gearbox has a LSD fitted.

Brakes are Willwood 4 pots, with mintex FR pads, Coillies are GAZ fully adjustables, front and rear strut braces, Corbeau Pro Series seats, with Oreca 3" harnesses.

6 point bolted cage.

Speedline 2118 wheels with T1R tyres.

Ad details below.

Engine spec
Std pistons new rings and bore honed
Super Tech Nitride inlet and inconel exhaust valves
KTR sport DTH ITB kit
KTR cat cams
KTR sport 2 piece air filter
Forge silicone coolent hose kit
Magnecore ignition leads

ECU
KTR Gen90 ecu

Exhaust
KTR recessed 2.5 cat back system
KTR 2.5 straight decat

Transmission
Gripper limited slip diff
KTR sport short shift
KTR lightweight flywheel

Braking
KTR wilwood 4 pot brake conversion
Brembo high carbon front discs
Mintex 1155 pads
KTR braided brake lines

Handling
KTR adjustable coilovers
KTR sport solid top mounts
Speedline 2118 wheels
Toyo R1R tyres

Interior
Corbeau pro series FIA Kevlar GRP seats
Oreca 4 point 3" FIA harnesses
OMP subframes
Weichers 6 point bolt in roll cage
Oreca 3 spoke dish steering wheel
KTR rear seat delete boot carpet

All the above parts are less that 1000 miles old.  Apart from engine, which is literally 400 miles old, and I have put 200 of those on it.  KTec were running it in for the owner.

Needs a touch of tidying up here and there, but being really picky.  Paid a very decent amount, and actually less than my old car was going to owe me with the cage/seat work done.

And I got a whole lot more stuff free!

Will have a oil service and remap (to remove the limiter and give full horses) in the next few weeks when I have more miles on the donkey.

Knew you would do it  :signLOL:

It made sense.  Both in time and £££'s.  The engine is new, box is 1000miles old post refurb.  Still needs some stuff doing, awful dished Steering wheel, and a harness bar are the first bits.

I will weld the Bar, and will also give it some action with the DA.

I looked at it when you told me about and I noticed how much he had spent on it so it was a good price for a car with all the hard stuff done

Update

Gave the car a clean today, and sorted out a few jobs.

1.  Replaced a whole load of fasteners with decent allen key headed bolts.
2   Removed a load of plastics from the rear of the car.
3.  Gave the car a decent clean and wax (used some OTT wax - Swissvaz BOS - Had it in the garage from the TT)
4.  Sorted the steering wheel.
5.  Raised the front coillies by 10mm.  Drivers side needed a touch of persuasion with carp in the threads, but got there in the end.
6.  I had some Decent wiper blades, and started to Re-Wiper the back end, just waiting on a plastic cap and the right rear blade.
7.  Gave the wheels a decent clean and seal.  (ps they don't come with caps - Palmer Motorsport wheels.)
8.  Converted my 4 point Harness into a 6 point, Oreca harnesses are made by TRS, so a call to them sourced 2  twin point crutch straps for £10 delivered!
9. Sorted out an oil leak.
10.

Future Plans

1. Caged Laser in Frome are welding in some door bars and a harness bar (to get the harness angle right)
2. Booked in for a Full Fat mapping session now the engine is run in - Friday 2nd March.
3. Fit the Whiteline Rear ARB.
4. May swap the coillies for some Bilsteins (TBC).
5. Refit the seats - Straight!!!   :fighting:
6. Remove the last airbag in the car - Passenger side.
7. Remove some more plastics, and make some door cards.
8. Tidy up the looms.
9. Make some centre caps for the speedlines.
10. 2 piece discs and brake ducts?

Above all enjoy it.  It really is cheap fun.

Absolutely love it.

The chassis even in full; fat trim is awesome.  I had a go in a friends stripped out 182 a while back and was blown away, but if there was one thing these cars needed, it was more power.  I dread to think how fast this could go around a track now!!

What sort of power are you expecting out of it?  They are notorious for not making their quoted figures from the factory and being N/A not cheap to tune.  So is good to see something like this

I think somewhere around 210 - 215.  The cams give a delicous lumpy idle........

The jewel in the crown is the LSD.  Even on the running in map (rev limiter set at 4500) it grips and goes.  The tyres are a part of that too............Toyo Proxes TR1R's 205/50/15's.

Weight is my main aim now.  Not sure what it weighs now, the only plastics left in are the dash, headlining and the door cards.  Soon to be sorted..............

Well Had a busy time of late.

Ran the engine in, well put circa 1000 miles on it, during the run in period it had a couple of issues, one being a major Oil leak, and a driveshaft oil leak weeping.

The major oil leak was sorted by K-Tec, they came and collected the car with a trailer, and had it for a week, mainly due to me working and not being around, so not being rushed.  I gave them time to sort properly, it turned out to be a faulty De-Phaser (VVT) pulley.  It was brand new, but gave up the ghost in a massive way, oil was literally everywhere.

All was sorted, and the car was mapped, it made decent torque and just shy of 210 horses, not bad for a
N/a donkey.

The engine will give more as it frees up, it is still incredibly tight (oh-Err).  We expect 215-220 horses.

I removed all the rear plastics, 1/2 the headlining, and all the rear carpets (the roll cage was fitted through them...........Not Good IMO).  So only the front door cards to do, and I have some plans for them..............

Well I sent the car away, to a place to sort the cage out.  I used a company called Caged Laser in Frome, http://www.therollcagepeople.com/ (http://www.therollcagepeople.com/) about 40 miles away.  They build a lot of race car space frame chassis, and did a lot of the UK based WRC, WTCC and BTCC cages.

I am very happy with the job, they sorted out the harness bars, put door bars in, and extra braces in the rear.  They took my original cage out to modify it, and powder coated the whole thing.  Great company, and a great Service.

They have a CNC 3d laser cutting machine.  I watched it for ages, and what a machine, cuts a perfect edge, and any shape, as long as you can program it.

So I went from this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3122.jpg&hash=9b0e4d54a0adeef882440eff440eae2623231f67)

Note the harnesses attached to the eye bolts on the floor - Not good, as it could try to crush the seat (and your back) in a heavy crash.........

to this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3137.jpg&hash=bd90ac7754456f29e39c9127d8bd662f244ea16b)

Circular pads to prevent the door card wrecking the finish, until I remove the cards - soon!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3145.jpg&hash=114fecaf0a6aa80a68313d0eb9c92a68718b0e39)

^^^^^^^Brand new OEM mats that came with the car, with a big hole sawn in them............

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3144.jpg&hash=a50322a6336992a99a54890f372d2e6c60d4ad2c)

^^^^^^Also sorted the engine breather today, will buy a catch can this week.

I have also sorted the driveshaft oil seal, i was going to get under it myself, but my local dealer (who also supplied the car when new    did it for £45 seal included!)

I have raised the front 25mm now, and it sits so much better.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3142.jpg&hash=c8e4d6e2ec906116a896242e0d5869a486c4cba3)

Nice steering wheel......... .  I fitted a Phase one Clio horn and indicator stalk, 2 screws and it was done, VW really make their cars complex in comparison..........

Fitted a White-line rear anti roll bar (cheers Mr P), the effect is really noticeable, turns in so much sharper, and feel more planted.

Well more driving, and looking for some standard OEM Cup suspension to run for a while, as the coilies fitted are not very tactful..........  They are the cheaper end of the market, and eventually I will fit some Bilsteins.

Ps the Cup was a great drive straight out of the box, and the cheapo coilies seem to ruin this.

Video of Laser cutter at work..........

You can buy the Cup racer/Group N stuff direct from selected dealers, there'll be an English Renault motorsports catalogue for your model on the web somewhere for all the diagrams and part nos, but if your French is ok, have a look at this (http://www.setpromotion.com/trade/documents/CLIO%20GR%20N.pdf).

I was told to get the Bilstein tarmac set up off the rally car, as your blow the tubes on the road if you use the circuit versions. Most people I know running these say aftermarket coils are of no benefit, as the OE Bilstein stuff is just so well set up.... I guess that's what happens when you have millions in your development budget, and a team not willing to compromise for the marketing lot.

I have been looking at the Grp N stuff Mike.  The Standard set up is very good, hence my wish to revert to standard with a set of -25 lowering springs.

I have GAZ fully adjustables and if honest they are carp.......

But it is so so funny to drive, even with poor Coilies it goes round corners so hard it makes you laugh.

Well I sorted the breather out, and was going to buy a catch can this week.

I did some looking at options, and they were all a bit max power stylee.  So I set about making my own.

From this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3144.jpg&hash=a50322a6336992a99a54890f372d2e6c60d4ad2c)

to this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3147.jpg&hash=bff7553b935d9bb28ecfe0564e8a86439108f80e)

It is a Sigg type aluminium fuel bottle, turned upside down, with a port in the side, and a port for the breather filter on the top.

I cut the holes with my trusty cone cutter, and used decent grommets, and a poly pipe insert (22mm).  Bit of black spray, and i now have 1 x Catch can.  To check the level I simply take the filter off, and dip it with a screwdriver.

To drain (which I can do in situ) I remove the bung that is normally the filling point.

Cost - some tube (already in garage),some grommets (50p), a flask (£4.99), a filter (already had)    and a 22mm pipe insert (30p), so less than £10.

Need to sort a bracket, at the mo it is ty-wrapped to the expansion tank, and is fairly sturdy.  Was thinking of a cheap bike drinks bottle holder bolted to scuttle behind.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fv211%2Fstokeballoon%2FIMG_3149.jpg&hash=b79b0f59450ece37780b1b892518511fa53e27a8)

Used a similar bottle to the below.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fananyah.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2011%2F02%2Fsigg-classic-1l-bottle.jpg&hash=5ed28f93d3eea66b4a41db4c43b16003fc411f1f)

In hand.  Not sure whether to use a connector through the bulkhead

something like this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffrprace.com%2Fracing_car_parts_nj%2Fimages%2FBulkhead%2520Pass-Thru%2520Battery%2520Cable%2520Terminal.jpg&hash=1bec8d5055b21a758c7e8deb49c5aeda411985f0)

Or just pass the +ve lead through the bulkhead in a suitable grommet................

Leaning towards the proper connector, need to wire a fuse in line too, just in case the worse happens.

Well nothing much to report.  Waiting for the battery box to be finished, and then it is full speed ahead for the battery relocation.

Took it out this morning - early, and converted over 1/2 tank of Tesco's finest into smiles.  Then gave it a wash at home.  Quick spin round the block to shed the post wash water in the scuttle and clean the brakes.

Quite funny having a National Trust sticker on a caged car!

Out at 0545 for nigh on 3 hours, didn't take a camera, the weather was fantastic, went down towards your neck of the woods, then the coast road towards   Portesham, then over past Hardy's Monument, then Dorchester, then Verwood, and bck via Sixpenny Handley and Zig Zag hill  (which was totally empty for the first time in the clio - Diff worked a treat!) Shaftesbury and back via Castle Scary.

Stopped for a coffee.

I thought the NT sticker would be a slight contradiction..............

Oh yes!! Some very nice driving roads indeed  :notworthy: - I can feel your enjoyment just by reading the route!

There used to be what looked liked a green hippy van at Hardy's Monument but a 'cafe van' run by a very nice young couple - He used to be a chef in the RN and she makes a mean Dorset Apple Cake. Local Longhorn Jim burgers! Quality!!

Well Update time.

Put loads of miles on the car, got a couple of smaller track days booked, as shake-down days, then will start the bigger tracks, Brands, S/stone, Bedford etc.

Still waiting for the battery box, given up really, so will make my own, just need to sort out some welding gear.

The catch can has been moved again.  It now resides behind the drivers side headlight.  This is due to the previous location being directly in front of the fresh air intake...................... Sit in a queue and fumes would fill the car.  So it had to move.

Made my own exhaust mounts, bought some generic Powerflex exhaust mounts from the bay, and fashioned them into the Renault casings, and the result is a really well suspended exhaust now, which moves just enough to compensate for the solid engine mounts.

Gave the car a touch of a clean, well threw a bucket over it.  The car comes up quite well, and is a track car after all.............

Also replaced a lot of corroded fasteners with decent BZP Cap headed bolts.  Looks so much better.

Pics.

That is all for now.  Looking at some better Coillies, as the ones fitted are utter pump.  Then the battery relocation, got all the bits ready to go.

This is shaping up into a really well mods-engineered car, Dave. Nice attention to detail. A labour of love and tender care.  :notworthy:

Very nice indeed  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

Shows how there can be an aesthetic beauty in purely functional mechanicals. Just like Zonda engine bays have!

Well had a bit of spare time.  Took something out of the front, and smashed it in the back................  :rolleye: :rolleye: :rolleye: :rolleye:

I made a strong stainless tray myself, getting me welding eye back in :happy2: :happy2:, and bought some transit tie down rings from the bay, which are secured on the 4 bolts that are securing the tray to the boot floor.

Fused with 150 amp Mega fuse near the battery and also at the starter end (standard Renault fuse), and made a bulkhead through connector myself.

Lashed down using some straps from the bay, with a 900KG breaking strain, and a really strong cam lock fastener, they are f'in tight! The battery is going nowhere!

The whole thing is bolted using HT 7/16 UNF bolts and 4 x Harness 3" square stress plates.  I was thinking about a race battery, but wanted to be able to leave it outside without a trickle charger plugged in.  So used the std battery.
