Title: What do you do for a living?
Post by: Matto on December 16, 2011, 06:05:24 pm
Abit random but this is random chat lol. Just wondered what people on here do for a living. I'll start. I'm a maintenance engineer at Rolls-Royce in Derby. I repair CNC machines that manufacture aero engine components.

So what do you do?

Try this for a change to pork. It's excellent

Rillette Duck

Duck leg meat (deboned & diced)
Garlic confit
Duck fat
Bouquet garni
Juniper berries
Green peppercorn

All ingredients in to pot, cook SLOWLY and flake the meat during cooking with a fork, leave in fridge for 24 hrs to infuse

I'll be honest, I don't think he has the push or temprament to make it - I hope he does and really hope he proves himself.
He hates being told what to do by the young commis, I keep telling him that's the hierarchy of industry and if he gets his head down that'll be him soon enough!

I won't tell my mrs you're handing out recipe tips - all she watches on TV is cooking programs - Masterchef, MAsterchef NZ, Masterchef Australia, Masterchef Professionals...I have to watch the same Top Gear episodes a few times to balance the equilibrium!

Yeah doesn't sound great, if he can't handle being told what to do then he's in the wrong game i'm afraid

Let's be honest nobody likes being told what to do, but it's a rank and file system and it has to be that way

If you can get him to focus on the fact that knowledge is key. Learn, learn, learn as much and as fast as he can and he'll soon move through the ranks and earn the respect of his peers. Graft is the key to move up in this business

A-site mate. Vast bulk of our work is carried out on 58, 57 and 55-bed along with Stennis (and Stennis 2 when it's built). We also cover Toulouse, TAESL, HAESL, SAESL, N3 and any other worldwide beds that can't support any dynamic measurements.

Couldnt get an experience in the IT field after Uni which I have now lost interest so im looking at the RAF, unfortunately they're not looking for people in what I want to do yet. So its a waiting game.

Currently work for JCT600 as a service driver. Has its perks, driving a TTRS to York and back to Leeds was fun. Driven Evos/RB320's/S3's/RR Vogues :driver:

Anyone looking for a new car, I should be able to get you a family and friends discount :happy2: (dont think its a hell of a lot off but money in your pocket is better right?)

All of the tankers we have bar this one carry liquid chocolate, its made at our main Factory in York and taken to satelite factories in Castleford, Halifax and Fawdon (Newcastle) This is the only one that goes to our 'Crumb' factory in Girvan on the west coast of Scotland carrying chocolate liqueur. Bloody messy stuff believe me!

I have 4 of my own businesses, with more in the pipeline too:

1.) Venture capital/fund raising for biotech/pharma/renewable energy companies
2.) Renewable energy product development/commercialisation
3.) Import/export of traditional greek foodstuff (can import/export anything, but just focusing on the Greek stuff at present)
4.) Trade finance - lending money to businesses, mostly manufacturing businesses that rely on stock turnover for production of their goods

Hey Robin, nope not Greek, but my business partner is - hence the Greek connection at present! His family own olive groves and have the contacts for really traditional Greek foods, which we are hoping to export to the UK. At the moment we're hunting for buyers so I'm in contact with some large wholesale/catering companies!

I'm in the IT field. Currently work for a company looking after the computer networks in various schools in a London borough.

Want to make a break from IT though. I'm actually thinking of staring The Knowledge of London instead. Have a Honda Scooter on order already so I guess could use that. Will be starting to do the course in my free time with the aim of being a London cabbie in 4 years or so.
Lots of hard work, study, and revision, but should lead to flexible hours day or night, and an easier life while making much more then I currently do as an IT professional!!

I build  and restore church pipe organs. currently stuck working on one in stockhom and it -12 outside! Can't wait to get back and spend some of the hard earned on the dub

Wow... That's a cool job. I love church organs, especially the one in Notre Dame. Massive sound.

Ditto, sounds really interesting and probably quite a specialist skill?  I wouldn't have thought there are many people that do that job?

Not many people doing it. Nice having a job where every instrument is different
