Title: Thoughts on front license plate relocation?
Post by: nezquick on January 03, 2012, 02:21:26 pm
I currently have this http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=24953.0 although I didn't pay nearly as much as that  I paid nothing  and am interested to know what is the best place or modification to relocate the license plate.

I know already about the legalities e.g. keeping your plate on the outside (not tucked behind the windscreen) so has anyone got any suggestions. I've had a few recommendation from some friends about reflective sticky plates that look very smooth and flush with bumpers.

Also what is the TC's plate mod?

Cheers in advanced  :drinking:

(pictures would be appreciated of what you think looks good and doesn't with license plate relocation)

TC is TopCat, a fellow forumite and one of the moderators here. If you look at his GTI thread, you'll see what he did. Basically stuck the bare plate to the grille with magnets. Means no plinths etc. Gives a cleaner look. Magnets mean that the plate can be taken off without any screwdrivers.

A sticker number plate is illegal i think (dont quote me though but pretty sure ive read somewhere it is on most cars). Id just stick it in the grill below using magnets as suggested above.

Unsure what your reg is but if private try get plate as small as possible (still with legal letters), will look better.

Is there a magnet kit available?

Don't think there's a kit. Look in TopCat's and Big gay Al's threads to see what they've been upto. Essentially glued neodymium magnets to the back of the grille and back of the plate. Ensuring the magnets stick to the plate have been challenging as they are stronger than the glue that binds them to the plate!

thanks for your replies :notworthy:

That explains what the TC mod is, I quite like the idea of that and guess you could use the old excuse "sorry officer, the plate feel off because the magnet came loose so I'm waiting to stick a new one on" if you didn't want it on.

I've seen so many cars (especially jap) around my area that have the plate in the windscreen and wonder do the police actually bother to stop you and enquire as to why you've decided not to adhere to the DVLA's 'recommendations' of keeping the plate on the front outside of the car or whether their just lucky.

Oh well I think I'll go with the TC mod!

Yeah I asked one of my friends and he said he wasn't sure if they were legal but as far as his concerned so long as its reflective and the letters were legal then the police shouldn't be too concerned.

Swine!!!
I have given up on the magnet mod, over the summer I am going with this:

Though do need to sort something out for winter, as the zip tie one isn't looking the nicest really.

are they gunna be strong enough to hold the plate to the car during motorway journeys or bad weather? they kinda look like my nephews toy arrows, the ones that stick to the windows. just curious because that actually looks quite good!

don't quote me on this, but i think it's an MOT requirement that the plate shouldn't be removable within a certain time frame (to prevent plate theft and car cloning i'd imagine). if this was the case, then the magnet plate mod would indeed be illegal in so far as it'd be an MOT failure.

it does look awesome tho

Just called him and he said as far as his concerned its more of a glance aspect. If the plate looks secure e.g. screwed on like most then its a pass so long as everything else is legal (format, size, etc etc) and said most people are more concerned about the safety of the car than a registration plate and hasn't done any timing. So i presume some garages may have different means or tests for "security" of a registration plate.
