I had my cambelt changed about 2000 miles ago by a VW mechanic who did it in his spare time.. The kit i got fitted was a Dayco (if i recall correctly) one from GSF. Ever since having this belt change done when i rev the engine i can hear a little whine.. when idling the noise isn't present. I can also hear it when i let the car roll to a stop if the area outside is quiet.. I had it checked over by the mechanic to see if the belt was too tight but it all seems fine. I've had it like this for a while now but just wanting to get it sorted now as its one of those things that annoys me so much. Could it just be the characteristics of the the belt that causes the whine as its not the OEM one from VW?
The car is a 04 GT TDI

Whines are normally from the belt being to tight theres no reason why a aftermarket non genuine belt would wine compared to a genuine one if fitted correctly

Did he just change the cambelt or used the full kit that includes rollers and tensioners?

I got the full kit for him to change, tensioners - rollers and water pump! The noise really annoys me.. if the belt was tight would it now do the whine all the time even on idle?

belt is to tight mate, get it slackened off and set to the correct tension and the noise will go

I don't know how a VW mechanic could have got this wrong if he had! :fighting: I'll take it to a different mechanic that works on the other cars we have.. See if he can get it resolved!

the belt tensioner has a pointer on it and you turn it until the pointer lines up with the FIXED notch in the body of the tenioner, ive had it before when ive replaced them that i set the tension but after turning the engine over twice the pointer has moved and the belt is over tight, some mechanics do over tighten belts, but TBH there is no reason to get it over tight as its not hard at all, post up how you get on and if it is over tightened mate

Yeah, I'll get it checked out once my car comes back from the body shop!!! I hope it doesn't cost me the same amount of money to get it checked and tensioned properly as it did to have the kit put on. :confused: is it easy to check without stripping it down properly?

its not that hard to check the tension, take off the top cover, and you should be able to see the tensioner, if you jack up the drivers side front wheel, put the car in 6th gear and turn the wheel clockwise it will turn the engine over, that way you can make sure the tensioner is working correctly mate, you will need a torch but you can see it mate, and its a case of making sure the pointer is in line with the notch, shouldnt cost much to have the tension checked TBH

Had this issue checked out few weeks ago and all seems fine with the belt as its to the correct tension :confused: Confusing one, i'll just have to love with the slight whine lol

My altea whines. Worse now the cat has been removed. Most of the pd140's seem to do it. Nothing really to worry about.
