Title: VC's ride...now with added taurine (updated 17/04/12)
Post by: VC on February 10, 2012, 12:29:07 pm
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FverycherryR32%2FBora%2FVWACTIONSOUTHWEST2012158.jpg&hash=743381fc728591df6f9d9c77f6ac3fe4c5cb19f2)

How we started:

Was in the market for something to run around in after selling the .:R32 and nothing took my fancy so decided to scratch an itch I'd had for a while and finally buy a Bora

First thing the shocked me is how cheap they were! Big specs, good miles and little money and you're rolling in something pretty tunable. Plan hatched and the hunt began leading me to a V6 4Motion, offer made and then drove up to go get it.

Spec on purchase:

Metallic Raven blue

Cruise control

Climate control

Rain sensors and auto-dimming mirror

Immo 3 cluster with miles to empty and lit needles enabled

Genuine Santa Monica wheels with Michelin tyres

window clips, Nime radiator fan fix

Rear debadged and doorlocks removed

flap and mats and a folder full of receipts and history

Its pretty spotless so pleased with it, yeah there's a few niggles with it but i'm happy at this level of cash.

Plans?

So far no updated pictures to post as things are in boxes and I've ony owned it for 3 weeks and have been abroad for most of that, but so far ready to go on or on order:

Set of 19" alloys - 9" front and 10" rear for a staggered stance

pirelli 215/35/19 front tyres and continental 235 35 19 rear tires

H&R adaptors all round

Mk4 .:R32 front anti roll bar

Wheel bearings all round

Front strut top mounts

1x Pair FK AK-Street Front Coilovers (Height adjustable)

1x Pair FK AK-Street Rear Shock Absorbers

1x Pair FK AK-Street Rear Springs

1x Pair Ride Height Adjusters (for rear)

1x Pair Drop links

Bonnet bra

Pictures to follow next week once I've got it all on and the car is lowered, hopefully if i get it right it will make the haters go mental as they dont like 19's on Bora's and the rims ive chosen are classed as a bit "played"

Audio will be getting sorted after that as it currently rocks a cassette player! Retro!  :pomppomp:

Nice one mate. Bought one new in March 2002, a 1.9 TDi Sport 130 in the same blue as yours. Loved that car. After it was gone wished we hadn't sold it. They drive better than the Golf 4 thanks to the weight hanging out back. I still think the quality of those was way better than the Mk 5's.

resisting at the minute mate as it just does 100miles a day on the motorway, but its difficult

keep thinkin some AP coils, some rims, and a cheeky map would be nice though  , it really is a crackin car suprises me every day how well it drives, its a 51 plate 130tdi done 11k miles in it 5 months and its not missed a beat

well i changed my mind at the last minute and went for the AP coils now rather than the FK-AK's, cos the FK-AK have a maximum dump of 60mm whereas the AP's get me down up to 90mm and my maths are making me think i'll need to be down about 65mm front and 60mm rear, but will at least give me better margins for a tidy low....or as low as you can get static on 19's

I use the AP's on the S3 mate and for the money they are spot-on, wouldn't hesitate putting a set on the Bora :happy2:

I've already ordered them from Germany now anyway but thats good to know dude, read mixed reviews about them but for my usage/milage theyll be just peachy

I've read mixed things myself, but I've had them fitted for a couple of years now, approx 20k miles and 4 trackdays with no issues so I can only go of my own experience. I'm sure there are much better out there, and if i keep the S3 I plan on fitting something a bit more upmarket, but for the money the AP's have been great

well i'm attempting to keep the budget on the floor so AP's fall nicely into the price range for a full setup, did plan to go air ride but almost fell over when i got a quote cos of the 4mo setup

First job is calipers, .:R32 ARB and wheel bearings then its time to hit it with the stick, although I don't think there's much to drop onto these rims....

So time to try the rims on the Bora to see what fits.  Its a staggered setup with the rears being wider and with the Boras flared arches it means theres lots of room to accommodate the width of these alloys too.

Initially had an issue with one of the adaptors with 2 of the 5 threads for the rim being cross threaded and a bit chewed up, but the answer presented itself in the most unlikely of places....I had a renault come for tinting and the owner took the adaptor and vanished for 20 minutes and then returned with the plate all retapped!

Meant he got a free tint job, but in return i got to put the rims on the car  :jumpmove:

The coilovers and ARB desperately need to go on now as the ride height on the car now puts the mrs's landrover to shame

the gap on the front:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FverycherryR32%2FBora%2Frimsfrontgap.jpg&hash=97f130d0334d118c3b45b549f80812d1697004d8)

the gap on the rear:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FverycherryR32%2FBora%2Frimsreargap.jpg&hash=22e1fa1b0219bcea59fa13fa708a3f88ca15eee6)

 :signLOL: :signLOL:

almost need a pilots license to fly at this height

That said though, the rims look absolutely perfect, with the look and the setup..... they were wasted on an X5

Minor update, but with no pictures  :ashamed:

Car is now down, right down  :pomppomp:

The adaptors had to be redrilled and modified to get the wheels on perfectly and the wheel bolts all shorted by 3mm.

The ecu has been reflashed, the car coded for beep and one touch full unlock, throttle body has been cleaned, coilies are now on but the height initially wasnt quite low enough. 90mm max drop so out came the adjusters and chucked to one side, and she now sits how i want her to

Had a few battery issues with it not holding charge so traced back to a dead cell and new battery slotted into place, and new wheel bearings are all in place to deal with the weight of the rims.

R32 roll bars werent added...she already had them!

Photos will come, next for her is the big change... she's getting the full Very Cherry treatment and will be having a full front to back graphic package  :innocent:

So far only the back end has been finished due to having to slot the work in between customers cars so eta for completion is hopefully in time for VW Action... pictures will come when she's done  :happy2:

i knew when i posted that i should expect a bit of flak

these are the only shots i can manage to take without exposing the new graphics in progress.... not much but it's all your getting  :P quality is poor cos the lights fading...and yes it needs a wash

this one shows the height i'm now sitting at, not the best angle but like ive said thats for a good reason  doesnt look crazy low but thats as low as i can go an stay drivable as the gap between rubber and inner arch is less than 10mm  the space looks greater from the outside due to the stretch but of course the bulk of the height tyre wise is inside the wheel arch....

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FverycherryR32%2FBora%2Farchgap.jpg&hash=5b26e4101e79d901608682c4a3661b0b24d16a6b)

this shot shows the distance between alloy edge and tarmac is currently a mere 1"

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FverycherryR32%2FBora%2Ftyretarmacspace.jpg&hash=97d763a6ba3932dfee3890e56f41b4ff00ca2f15)

certainly makes for interesting driving especially with the mere sniff of a tiny pothole filling me with fear

I cant show you anymore as yet, once the car is detailed and the graphics finished i'll fill the thread with shots  :happy2:

progress so far:

passenger side 0%
driver side 80%
bonnet 90%
rear 60%
roof 0%

its been painful and slow going since i lost the use of a workshop but overall happy with it, a delivery driver to next door came over while i was working on the rear quarter and begged to take a photo... me thinks it should be well received because he called it "just stunning mate....stunning...just...wow" which is a good sign  :popcornsoda:

pencilled in another few hours tomorrow on it - mad to think i'll be removing it all in a few weeks

Do you work / are you sponsored by Red Bull then?

Also, I don't get the whole BMW wheels thing. Sure, the design is lovely, and suits the car well, but why keep the centre caps?  :ashamed:

I went red bull purely down to the colour of the car and the centre caps annoy people so I left them as they were

I had merc caps on my R32 and the haters lurved those too

Oh, you can read?!

Yeah allowed...surely using another company's brand name without their permission isn't allowed. I don't know anything about it, neither do I know if you've asked them, I was just curious as I think it's an interesting idea and wanted to know the legalities (if there is in fact any) behind doing something like this...
