I'd like to see Apple drop the naming convention from the iPad and iPhone. They don't do it with any other products and it's going to sound rather daft once they're up to higher numbers.

Me too. They always used the ** Generation tag on all the other products. I hope its just called iPad. Although rumours are abound it will be either iPad 3 or iPad HD.

Have they dropped the iPad 'Pro' idea maybe?

I heard it could have been that with an SD card slot for Pro Photographers.

Nope. Never gonna happen IMO. There is already an SD card adapter to transfer photos on to the iPad.

I actually think I read it on here.

I am not sure whether I will watch the event but interested all the same.

The new iPad could take the touch screen to a new level.
Speculation is mounting that the Apple tablet will include a 'haptic' display that allows users to 'feel' on-screen objects.

Finnish company Senseg has confirmed that it has talked to tablet manufacturers about its e-sense technology, though it refused to comment on whether Apple is a customer.

But the addition of texture would fit with the wording of the invitation sent out by Apple to an event later, at which it is expected to launch the iPad 3.

"We have something you really have to see. And touch," it read.

The Senseg technology works by generating an electric field from elements build around the screen.

So-called 'tixels' make different parts of the screen feel rough, smooth or rounded, depending on the image.

The new iPad is also likely to have an HD display, with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels.

That's four times the sharpness of existing models, though not quite as sharp as the iPhone's Retina Display.

Technology blogs have speculated that the new device will come with upgraded cameras, a longer-lasting battery and possibly a fast quad-core processor.

It will almost certainly have Siri, the voice control software first included on the iPhone 4S.

Post by: Deako on March 07, 2012, 04:18:47 pm
It will still have dual core but will just be slightly overclocked to deal with increased resolution. Its got an A5X chip, not an A6. So doubt they will have gone quad core.

Haptic displays are a LONG way off. Certainly Apple will never implement technology that hasnt been tried and tested elsewhere first.

It will simply be an iPad 2 with a higher res screen and slightly faster CPU. Im thinking it will simply be classed as a high performance iPad 2, sold along a basic line up of iPad 2 models for the next year.

My reasons. Im used to being disappointed by Apple keynotes. I expect the minimum these days. That way, if they roll out a barnstormer, i will be more impressed.  Its unlikely though. Apple know they need to keep technology held back for the next model.

Eight step Plan

1. Go ahead and make the purchase whatever it may be, Koni FSD's & Eibach's, new TV, trip away etc. etc.
2. Keep it quiet for as long as possible (this keeps ear ache down to a minimum)
3. As and when the new purchase is about to be delivered or you are about to go on that trip with the lads, start dropping subtle hints.
4. SWMBO finds out about said purchase/up coming trip
5. All hell breaks loose (be prepared for a rocky ride for up to a week)
6. SWMBO calms down (but has still not forgiven you so tread carefully)
7. After around two weeks everything is back to normal.
8. Start planning the next purchase/trip

There is a trial by O2 & Virgin in London, Everything Everywhere & BT are trialling in Cornwall & Bristol, 3 are planning to start a trial in Slough

Due to this i have gone for the iPad Wifi only as there is no need for a 4G device in the UK just yet imho.

I love the way apple blow smoke up it's arse though. All they've done is put a better screen on it and new processor. Hardly "redefining" a product is it?

Integrating 4G data standards probably took some doing as well. At least it paves the way for the next iPhone. Better camera too, should you need it.

I desperately want one, as i dont currently have an iPad since we sold our 1st Gen. But the wife has categorically told me its a no go!!!  :sad1:

Better Screen, Processor, Graphics, Bluetooth, Wireless (granted not really useable in the UK yet), Camera.

I do agree they big things up but I think that is just marketing in general. Any new device that comes out is always "a game changer"

A lot of companies do that - VW for example

I use FaceTime a lot, both at work and at home, so the improvements to the camera mean I'll be getting one. Trade-in (and being able to buy it ex-VAT) means I'll only pay £75 for the upgrade.

Other than that I think the screen will look beautiful.

I've just had my price for work confirmed at £250 (ex vat) for base entry model.

Not bad for something that costs about £17 to make  :happy2:

Its well over $100 (in material parts only), not taking into account research, development, manufacturing, support etc etc etc

Your paying for the research and development of the next device though. Apple use their profit to help fund the research into the next device that's coming online. They will already be about 6 months into the development cycle of the iPad 4 by now. That costs money.

You drive a car that probaly cost a few hundred to maybe a couple of thousand to make. But we all pay massive margins on them as it funds the development of new technology.

Unfortunately the parts don't grow on trees

Mine said that earlier Steve.

It's in transit. If you use the iPhone App it will give you a better status.

If you look at the Tracking No. when it comes up the last digit will be missing of the result page where it says "please call". Give it a couple of hours and it will appear as in transit on the website :happy2:

Well I'm not madly impressed by it. Sure the screen is better, but it's only perceivable in certain apps. I'm not feeling the difference I did when going from a pre-Retina display iPhone to the iPhone 4.

I would imagine thats due to the distance you hold the iPad from your eyes compared to the iPhone. It will come into its own once there are apps specifically designed for the much higher resolution.  :happy2:

My phone contract is due for renewal next month and was going to downgrade to simplicity, as i bought my handset outright when the 4s was released, looking at simplicity i would get 500mb a month on my phone for £16 a month. How much is the one on 3?

I'm on the £36 2 year deal, but phone price is subsidised in that. However, the handset price was only £69 and there was £110 cash back through quidco.

I think they may do a sim only deal with unlimited Internet too.

Quite fancying apples recycling deal where they will give me £165 for my 64gb iPad 1 3G.

Seems to save the hassle of selling but like wbac.com maybe that price is a fantasy and when they get their hands on it offer you a lot less.

I could be tempted, I may check mazumba etc later... It may be upgrade time.

The first thing my wife said was "is this heavier and thicker?" :signLOL:

Regarding the upgrade question; it's very unlikely with Apple products nowadays that you'll see massive leaps between revisions. If you compare it to it's immediate competition it's a lot better, and for me that is far more relevant than whether it is hugely different to the last version.

Do you not use auto brightness? I find that helps a lot especially if I'm reading a book in bed etc

The only thing that does bug me is it doesn't work like they used to. It will go brighter on its own but it won't dim unless you switch it to standby and back on again. I preferred it when it would dim/brighten as needed. The iPhone is the same these days.

Another thing, it takes bloody ages to charge!

Make sure you only use the new charger and cables that came with your iPad. The old cables and iPhone chargers don't work on the new iPad for some reason.

Seems I'm not alone with the battery drain issues.

And for those of you saying the battery life is improved, I wouldn't listen too much to Apples claimed battery life as this doesn't take into consideration how much power a certain app uses. Normal web browsing for example is supposed to drain more battery in the new iPad than the iPad 2.

...its worth noting too that for ipad newbies when youre done with an app, double click the center button and shut it down properly because otherwise you can end up with all sorts still running

Lol, are you sure you've got one Carl?

They will work, but they'll also take ages to charge it. Even Apple have stated that.

I don't seem to have a problem. I have used my iPad pretty much all day  a few times since i got it (circa 8-9 hours) web browsing, listening to music on it, playing the odd game, reading a book, watching the odd youtube vid etc and the lowest i have got on the battery is 28%.

What apps are you using?

Why would i lie about it? Would you like to see a picture of it and my order details from Apple?

Which is my point. They do work. Deako said they don't when they do. I charge mine up over night  when it is required so i never notice any problems with charging.

I'm only joking mate

When you said fine I assumed you meant there was no difference. To clarify, yes the old chargers work, but they take an awfully long time to reach full battery.

Yup i read those reports. It even takes longer to charge with it's own charger. Apparently it can take upto an hour after the iPad reports 100% to reach full charge according to what i read on iClarified the other day.

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=20864

Maybe that is where some people are having a problem. As i said mine get's done overnight so it is probably sat on 100% for at least a couple of hours and i am using a spare iPhone charger to charge it with.

One thing i have noticed is that the 2m cables don't work with it properly for some reason. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. It's not the cable as it works fine with my 4S

.
Some of the third-party App developers are calling the 'New iPad' the iPad 3. This makes much more sense - What are we going to call the New iPad in the future? The old new iPad?  :stupid:

Ive more frequently heard it referred to the 3rd Gen iPad, which makes far more sense to me. Gets around it being called the iPad 9 in 5 years time, which just sounds daft.

Agree entirely. Apple should drop all numbers from the end of their devices. Its an iPad, plain and simple. If peolpe ask which one, its a 3rd generation.

They already employ this with the iPod Touch and the iPod Nano. So hopefully, they also do this with the next iPhone. And refer to it as the 6th generation.

^^^^
I agree too. Perhaps Apple will call the 4th generation iPad the 'New iPad' too, then it'll make sense.
