Title: Panel filter vs CAI
Post by: webby888 on March 15, 2012, 07:26:31 pm
Iv recently fitted a K+N intake and sometimes under load it makes a loud high pitched noise, iv read up on here that a few intakes do this, however i find it realy annoying and im thinking of changing to a unrated panel filter, will i notice a drop in performance or is the any other intakes that dont make this noise?

Its for a K03 GTI

Thanks!

The stock fsi intake box hides a myriad of strange noises that show up with a cai.

VWR/ITG are going to try and figure out if there is a way to reduce the noise but if not I'm going to sell it as i didn't want a lot of intake noise. the power is better but I want to keep the car quiet if possible

If you move the DV to the front like in a K04 people say the noise disappears.  The noise of the intake is what made me switch back to the engine cover.  I just have the noise of my BCS to enjoy now

Not sure about the tsi but with the tfsi you just buy parts from the ed30 and fit them.

I love the sound the intake makes just hate the high pitched noise! In that case then I may sell it on

With taking it off will i notice a drop in power? My car also had a stage one map done with the intake on so will i need this adjusting if i remove it?

a boost leak would also make a high pitched sound, everything fitted ok?

i guess so, everything is done up tight, is there any way of locating a boost leak or is it just guess work?

I used to have the Neuspeed P-Flo intake for my K03 audi TT. I found it to be very noisy as everyone else has said and got a decent amount of heatsoak when  in stop start traffic.

ITG developed a intake kit for the TT on my car and now I can barely hear any intake noise. A little bit of suction noise under load but really minimal and that's it really. If I changed to the ITG from stock and took a friend out they wouldn't notice any different. It's down to the enclosed filter that they have done. Here is a pics.

Seems to be given massive torque figures and looks pretty meaty with a 5" bore!

I don't know whether there is a company out there that offer's an enclosed intake for the Golf specifically. This ITG kit wouldn't work due to the massive airbox and the lack of battery in the front of the TT. From previous knowledge I think Pipercross had an enclosed filter induction kit for VAG K03 fitment. Worth a look.

VWR do an enclosed intake for the tfsi very similar to the one thats fitted in the above car.

I think that's the ideal solution for a quieter intake system. Anything enclosed will deaden the sound massively and just leave a very subtle intake sound. ITG make the VWR kit and is pretty much the same thing as the system I have on there. Only difference is size of the bore and VWR get the kit anodized instead of powder coated.

I've got the VWR CAI for my K04 Ed30 and there's no high-pitched noise whatsoever, just a great suction noise when flooring it and an increased (but not too loud) DV sound when giving it beans. When your pottering round town you wouldn't even know it's there tbh.
